Hi all. I received great news regarding Osteoblast. The dean has allowed me (accept-space available) to attend this Saturday. I will also be meeting with several realtors regarding purchasing a home (preferably a 3 or 4 bedroom on or near the water) probably in the Wells/Oguquit area (15-20 minute drive from UNECOM). My name is Gerard and I hope to see some of you on Saturday.

Take care! 😀

If you want to live closer to the campus, check out my post #639 in this thread. I have a three bedroom single family attached home for sale. We have some showings this weekend, if you are interested we could probably arrange a time for ya. Let me know if you want to see some pictures.
If not no worries happy house hunting. 😀

Hey Ben - My landlord is looking for tenants. He has a 4 bedroom house that is 3 miles from school. I loved my time in this house and the only reason I'm moving out is to live with some upcoming 2nd years. I believe he posted info about the place under the name Romeolucas.

Feel free to contact me ([email protected]) or my landlord ([email protected]).

TO ALL ACCEPTED STUDENTS OF THE UNECOM CLASS OF 2010

This post contains the official information regarding Osteoblast 2006. Even though New England is enduring some awful weather, Osteoblas t will still be held this Saturday, May 20, 2006 at UNECOM from 12 pm – 4 pm. This event is hosted by the UNECOM Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA), Student Government Association (SGA) and the Office of Recruitment, Student and Alumni Services (RSAS).

The schedule is as follows:
12 pm -1 pm– Barbecue
1 pm – 2 pm SGA and RSAS Awards

Music and Festival to follow awards including live performances from our 2nd year band Circle of Willis, 1st year band Somatic Dysfunction and the a capella group Sympathetic Tones.

In addition to COM students and faculty, we invited several vendors from the area that provide services medical students often need when starting school.

Though we are hoping that the rain will subside by Saturday, Osteoblast will be held rain or shine. The rain location is yet to be announced. Osteoblast is an event that is strictly invitation only. Accepted students should have received an invitation via email. We apologize for any confusion.

If you plan on attending, please contact the RSAS office at [email protected] prior to Saturday so we can plan for your attendance.

We hope to see you there!

Lisa Wuerdeman
SOMA President-elect 2006-2007

Hey-

The floods were more south and west than the Portland Area. I live in Biddeford and a lot of people have had water floods in the basement but nothing like places south like York and west like Lebanon where rivers and dams have gone leaving feet of water in the streets and houses.

As of right now- it's still raining...but at least we're getting some really fun thunderstorms 🙂

Anyone here anything about the flooding in NE? Did it hit Portland at all, and if so is there some major damage?

I've been informed that any "Accepted-space available" students may also attend if they RSVP to the RSAS office at [email protected].

Thanks again,
Lisa

Spartan,
The flooding is pretty bad! 🙁 I have family in York, which is south of biddeford and portland, and the flooding is pretty bad. There are dumpsters and propane tanks floating aimlesly around. The stores may not open for Memorial day due to the water damage! Schools are closed too. I can send you pics that my uncle sent me from York if you would like to see them, I will just need your email address! As for Portland, I believe it is not nearly as bad. I am pretty sure that portland is in the clear, but i will find out for you later tonight!
Smile,
Shelley 🙂

Pictures would actually be really appreciated. I just saw some images on the news and wondered why the media wasn't making a bigger deal about it. I really hope your family is safe.

Hey dude, I live in NH and we got nailed pretty good. I live up on a big hill but pretty much everywhere around me is under water. I got friends who havent been to their homes since early Sunday. They just cant get through because the roads are destroyed. There are a few towns around me that have been completely evacuated. There are at least three dams that have burst and a few more that they expect to any minute. We have pretty much every fire and rescue crew on call and staged at key points. One of the guys in my EMT class is a photographer for the papers in the area and he says that pictures cant even capture it. Here are a few links to some pics. In the second link, the towns of Franklin, Bristol and Andover are right next to me. Kinda scary.

Some pics of the flooding
More pics of the flooding in NH

For stuff on Maine, try checking out some of the local papers websites. The Portland Press Herald will probably have a few good ones.
-Rob

there was no flooding here in Biddeford. most of the town is elevated in comparison to the Saco River. Although it was raging and very cool to see, it never overflowed. The ocean surf was pretty choppy and powerful, but again no worris here or in Portland. I hard Wells was under a foot or so of water but we're a little higher up here.

It seems that some folks matched pretty well--I see a match at Cleveland Clinic and matches in allo diagnostic rad.

For those who want to stay in New England and especially Boston, it's nice to see matches at Mt. Auburn and Cambridge (both are Harvard teaching hospitals) and at Lahey (affiliated with Tufts).

very interesting BostonDO,

i have a friend who is a current resident at UMass medical, she said she was impressed with the the graduates from UNECOM, and only heard good things about them. I personally had seen by an UNECOM alumni when I injured myself on the slope. I also had very good things to say about the care I got. That's why UNECOM was my top choice.

just my 2cents

Thanks for posting the list.

It is really good to see that. It shows that as Wook said, people generaly match where they wish to go.

It is good to see a whole bunch of NW and NE positions, especially MA. One state I would definitely consider. I guess it is true. If you train people in the NE area they will stay there.

----------------------------------------------------

Hopefuly, everyone is doing good and still looking forward to the start of classes in 2 month or so.

I don't know if I will make it there this weekend. Iwas hoping to, but then realized the weather is going to be crap. And with with flooding in some areas, probably not the best thing to do at this time. I will see.... and decide by tomorrow.

Also, has everyone been able to log on to my.une.edu

Cause there is a group for us where we can start posting in. Maybe transfer from pipeline to myUNE. What do you guys think?

I don't know if I posted in this thread or another, but the "official list" should be here....http://www.une.edu/com/clinical/postgrad.asp when it is completed.

Right now it only goes as recently as the class of 2005.

Hello all,

We are still looking for two housemates for next year. Our house is about 8 minutes from campus in a nice residential area and has a nice yard with a deck overlooking a private backyard. The two rooms are large with plenty of closet space and they share their own bathroom. We all share a roomy kitchen with plenty of shelf/fridge space for everyone's food. We have off-street parking, laundry, wireless high-speed internet, and unlimited local and long distance phone. We are looking for someone who is friendly, respectful, neat, and values a good home study environment. There's also a piano which you are welcome to play (if you play). My wife will be an MSIII next year and will be doing her clinical rotations in Southern Maine. I am a software engineer working on web applications for Dartmouth-Hitchcock hospital and work from home a few days a week. Rent is $530/month which includes everything. If you are interested, PM me with some contact info and I will send you pictures of the house and all the rooms as well as a phone number and email address where we can be contacted. No dogs, cats, or smokers please.

definitely like the my.une.edu better. Easier to see messages and if any new are posted. Like the chat thing, too. But looks like not everything has transferred - no photos, email isn't on my.une.edu yet... there is a lot of work to be done there. But I say move us!

Hi Guys,
Another member of the class of 2010 here. Congrats to everyone on your acceptance and good luck to those still waiting. UNE is a great school - I think we hit the jackpot.

I am getting ready for my big move to Biddeford on June 3rd and I am looking for a couple of strong hands. I don't have a lot of stuff but I definitely could use a little help unloading in Maine. I would be glad to return the favor.

Ben

Hey guys, hope everyone is doing well. I am trying to decide if I should come up to the Osteoblast thing on Saturday eventhough I dont know if I am a member of the class or not. Anyone else going? Also, what has everyone been up to? It seems that a lot more people are using the my.une.edu page than are posting here. Which stinks for me since I cant become a member on there yet. Anyway, take care.

Hey Rob... According to the SOMA President-elect (aka - brody17) "any "Accepted-space available" students may also attend if they RSVP to the RSAS office at [email protected]" which she posted on #906. So, the decision is totally up to you as long as you RSVP beforehand.

Yeah, I knew we could go if we RSVPed but what I am wondering is if anyone else from on here is going so I wouldnt be wondering around aimlessly. Its about a 2 hour drive for me also so I wouldnt just want to go up there and then come right back. Anyway, if anyone is coming and maybe wants to meet up, let me know.

hey rob...I'm in the same boat as you are. My name is Gerard and I'll be going up Saturday from Boston. Gonna check out some properties before and after as well. I just can't figure out if I should dress semi-cas or better. Should be alot of fun and we can talk to current students, maybe some faculty members. I still have a bunch of questions about computer hook-ups, research possibilities, etc. to name a few. If you go, shoot me a reply and I'll see you up there.
Take care

Hey Rob and Gerard,

You should definitely go and introduce yourself. I would consider that a commitment to the field and to the University. Just go and introduce yourself to everyone.

Unfortunatly I don't believe that I will make it. Maybe later in the summer.

Best,
db

Alright, so the weather has made preparation for Osteoblast a bit more complicated. I'm looking outside my window at blue skies so hopefully, this will last until tomorrow. Just in case, Osteoblast has been moved to the cafeteria/Garden area.

When you drive up HillsBeach road, you can park in the 2nd parking lot on your right. Cross the street and walk down the path. You will see the library directly ahead on the cafeteria on your left.

The dress is casual. Weather permitting, there will be a dunk-tank, 3-legged race, and tug-of-war. It's a barbecue so bring your eating pants.

We hope to see you all there. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hey Rob, did you guys find out any more info about the space available list (i.e. movement post-May 15th, # of people actually on the list, etc.) while you were there?
I bet it was nice to meet everyone! Sounds like you guys had a great time, wish I could have been there....but I had to work 👎

What a great time...nice meeting you too Wook and I'm glad you decided to make it Rob. Beachbunny...I didn't get any new info. on the list. Everyone was real friendly and I didn't feel odd for a second. I actually was introduced to the same person by 3 different people during the day. After the 3rd time, we were like "yea, we've met" with a funny smile on our faces.

Hope I'll see ya all in the fall. Take care,

QUESTION FOR MAINE RESIDENTS.

Do you know how to register out of state car in Maine. I am thinking of buying one from Boston. Is it complicated and will I have to pay lots of taxes and registration fees. Sometimes its is less hassel to get in instate. Any idea on this.

Thanks

Hey Beachbunny, I think I found out some info, but it was from a current MS1 who is also a OL, so I dont know how reliable it is. She told me that there are about 60 of us on the list. And that last week, a bunch of people have withdrawn from the school. So there should be some movement from our list. But like I said, I just heard this from an OL. Hopefully for us though, we start to see some movement.

Thanks Rob and Gerard for responding 🙂 I'm sure you'll post if you hear anything and I'll do the same. Just think, out of those (maybe) 60 of us, some on the list will actually drop off for other reasons than getting in for this fall (being taken off other waitlists at other schools and such)...so with that combined with those already accepted who have chosen to go elsewhere, maybe, just maybe, we have a shot for the class of 2010! Have you guys started your AACOMAS for 2007 just in case? I guess I have to start thinking about that....

Hey beachbunny, what number are you on the list? Did youever figure out what that number means? I hope all goes well for you and you get in! It really seem like you deserve to be in from what I've read. Good Luck!

Have any of you considered (or are currently enrolled in) the online Masters in Public Health degree along with the DO?

Got any insight/feedback on the dual degree program? Yay or nay?

I'm contemplating it right now..

Yeah, I'm in the 3rd quartile 🙁 not too hot. It just means that at least 50% of the people on the list are ahead of me. They still have yet to receive my transcript from this semester with an A in Orgo II (wahoo!), but it's too late to help my spot on the list. I'm also currently in the distance Biochem course through UNE as well. I wonder if it hurt me that I hadn't finished the prereq's yet? Oh well....thanks for your well wishes. Are you in for the fall? Or on the list with me?

According to one of the links on the UNECOM website:

"Off Campus Housing
Residency Requirement

The University has a three-year residency requirement. Students eligible to live off campus must be living with a legal relative or have earned 90+ credit hours. Students 22 years of age and older may petition for exemption through the Office of Housing and Residence Life. A request for off campus approval must be made through the Housing Office."

Does that mean that you have to live in Maine for three years before you can apply to UNECOM or before you apply for off-campus housing? This stipulation is confusing. Could anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.

That's for the undergrads. You, as a medical student, will be required to live off campus. There's no residency requirement for UNECOM, i'm still a resident of Pennsylvania since I plan to go back there (hopefully) for rotations and residency.

I am in the fall. It sounds like you would be a great add to the 2010 class. I hope everything works out. Are you planning to attend UNECOM for 2011 if things do not work out this year or what is your back up plan? Hopefully you won't have to worry about that, but just in case. Best wishes!

Thanks Wook,

It is very nice of you to always help out.

I did not find anything about registering out of state, but it should be okay. MA regulations are the stiffest in the country.

I will call them this week, since I need to know if they will accept my drivers license or not. You never know.

Thanks

Hope everyone is doing well.

For those of you who finished first year or more, what do you recommend doing during the summer after 1st year?

Hello Class of 2010!
Congratulations!

I am a current 2nd year, moving on to rotations. My landlord is looking to fill the cottage when I leave on July 15th.

It is a year round, private and cozy guest house, on Hills Beach Road...the closest house to school. It takes me 7 minutes to walk from my kitchen table to the classroom (2 minutes to bike)! Save on fossil fuels!!!

It is a 1-2 bedroom (my husband and I use it as one). Ideal for a couple or a single person. A loft style cottage, with a galley kitchen, 3/4 bath. Storage and w/d hookup in basement.

The backyard overlooks the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge (Biddeford Pool), while across the street is the ocean. It is quiet, off the road behind the main house with nice windows for checking out birds and other wildlife.

Connie is a wonderful landlord...she and her son live in the main house and take care of yard work, snow removal, etc.

Heat/HW is oil heat, which we have only filled twice in 1.5 years. The small house heats up quickly.

Give Connie a call with more questions: 207-284-5785

It has been a wonderful space to live for medical school...a peaceful haven during some stress-filled times.

Feel free to contact me any other questions about school, etc.: [email protected]

peace and blessings,
Christine
