*^*UNECOM Class of 2011*^*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks...I was wondering about that. I hope we get to go on that much-rumored rafting trip during our "informal" orientation. That sounds like a blast!
Anyone have any info on our orientation activities?

they just put the committee together so they do not have that information yet.

Anyone send in their first $1000 in yet?

You'll get information about orientation over the summer. i know, it seems like FOREVER to wait. It'll be here before you know it. In the meantime, try to not go nuts... I remember calling RSAS about every 2 weeks asking if they'd sent information that I just hadn't gotten... I think I drove them slightly bezerk. Then I heard I wasn't calling NEARLY as often as some other folks were!

Relax... You should get a packet in May or so with things to get done... the biggest one being you'll need a physical form filled out by a doc (the physical needs to be done no longer than one year before matriculation. So sometime after August 2006). You'll need an eye exam (again, done by your doctor - I just attached my scrip from my optometrist). You'll need your immunizations documented with DATES and TITERS for certain ones. Some of those titers can be expensive, so you might want to check when your health insurance cuts off and plan accordingly.

Sit tight. Look at computers and start testing them out if you are thinking of a new one. Stockpile nitrile gloves (you can't use latex in lab and you go through them FAST). you'll need some scrubs for anatomy lab, too. Ones you can burn when you're done. 🙂

Wook, thanks man. How are things going on your end? What are you up to now?
-Rob

Still in residency and its keeping me busy. First year will be here before you know it. ShyRem's suggestions are great! I would also add that you should try to hang onto a copy of your immunization schedule as you never know when you will need them again (I ended up having to repeat ALL my vaccinations years later because I didn't have a copy of them).

Wook

Wook, couldn't you request copies from UNE??? They keep them all on file.... or else why did they want copies themselves??

ShyRem:

Sorry about causing confusion. I took off about....hmmmmmm....15 years between undergrad and med school. The records that were needed were for med school. Since I could not produce the documentation, I had opted to get lots of immunizations. My "pediatrician" had retired years before, and the records were destroyed, so it made the most sense to go ahead and immunize. My undergrad school was unable to provide any medical records relevant to immunizations.

Wook

I see. I had the same problem with my HepB stuff. I actually got the titer without a firm date... so I guesstimated it considering my titers were fine. As for my baby titers, my mother kept a baby book with all my shots in it. And I even have a small slip of paper with my old doc's signature stating I got smallpox vaccine with the resultant scar (good thing I have that since the scar has since been removed from trauma).

I suppose my journey has ended. I have chosen to attend NSU over UNE. UNE is such a great school, but at the end, NSU was the best fit for me. Congrats on everyone who got into UNE. Take care everyone! 😀 It's been a blast! 👍

I'm in!!!!!!!!!

Interviewed Jan 30th, accepted on Feb 3rd. Is this a world record response time?

From NY.

See you in august!!!.

Hello Dave and Protease! Our class is growing....

Dave, that's great, your birthday will give us an excuse to celebrate our first day of orientation! Wahoo!

also in!!!!!!!!!!

From NJ and slacking off in the last semester of college(too much senioritis)?

Can someone pls describe anatomy class for me. Do we start cutting cadavars from first semester or not and how fun is it ?

anatomy class. this will be one of your first classes, and yes, you start cutting from day one. Your very first day's work will be wrapping your cadaver's hands, feet, and face, and skinning the lower extremity. Bring scrubs. Bring old nasty shoes. If you're female, bring a sacrificial bra (you won't want to be wearing it anywhere else).

Gross lasts from August until right before Halloween, almost every day. Dang, that seems like FOREVER ago and I'm still an MSI. As for how fun is it: At the time it was so much information I thought I'd puke. Those were the good ol' days and I wish I was back in anatomy lab. Truly. I'd rather do anatomy than histology any day.

A disclaimer: the above is based on last year's curriculum. Who knows what they'll do next year. 🙂

Fear not: we'll (the class of 2010) be doing reviews before each exam to help you on the way. I would highly recommend going to them.

Thanks Shyrem. I got in without a D.O letter like u advised. Honesty is the best policy!

how many ppl to one CADAVAR?

i can't wait to start stabbing/cutting/pinching a body donor?

would i still be able to matriculate if i drop out of my classes and eventually drop out of college!

My senioritis is just too bad..beyond my ability to maintain.

Hmmmmm...technically, I think the answer to this is yes. However, it may be worth struggling through (with a rather large grin on your face) to obtain the piece of paper at the end that you have worked so hard for (yes I know you are joking).

Enjoy the remainder of the year, and soon enough you'll be learning anatomy up close and personal.

Wook

Wook, I wish I had your memory (especially looking at Step I at the end of next year). I can hardly remember what I need to for my current exams, let alone remember this stuff a year from now... and here you are remembering what you need for admission. I bow before your memory skills. And quite frankly I'm a bit jealous. 😉

From UNECOM's admission's page:
Following are the scholastic requirements for admission, followed by recent averages.

* Ninety (90) semester hours or 75 percent credit toward a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
* A cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.7 in both elective and required subjects. The average GPA for the class of 2009 is 3.37.
* Satisfactory completion of the following courses, including laboratory:
o Eight semester hours (credits) of biology
o Four semesters (generally 16 credits) of chemistry
+
Biochemistry is required for matriculation, but candidates are encouraged to submit an application if currently enrolled or to be enrolled in biochemistry prior to matriculation.
+
UNECOM offers both a Distance Medical Biochemistry course and Organic Chemistry distance education course. To find out more about these courses, visit the Distance Education homepage.
o Eight semester hours (credits) of physics
o One year (generally 6 credits) of English composition and literature
* Satisfactory completion of the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT), taken within two years of application. The minimum MCAT score is 18 with M on the writing sample. The average MCAT score for the class of 2009 is 25.2.
But to be safe, I'd read your acceptance letter carefully and make sure it doesn't say something like "satisfactory completion of work in progress".

<-- acceptance contingent upon successful completion of the outstanding biochemistry requirement....

👍 thank you mailman & une!

Seeking Roomate

Dear Fellow UNECOM 2011 students, I am looking for someone to share a 2 bedroom apartment together with, preferably in Biddeford Pool.

PM me if you are interested.

I don't smoke, do drugs, or participate in the sale of firearms, narcotics, or prostitution.

Hey ShyRem and you others out there. A few questions for you if that is ok? First, what are some of the better areas to live around UNE? I am a single guy, 24 and want to be pretty close to school. I really like the Hills Beach Area but cost is a factor. Are there any areas where med students tend to live near? Any areas to avoid? Another one, is it possible to have a dog in med school? I dont want to leave the dog home alone all day long just to have it get depressed, but having a pet, especially a dog would really help with my sanity. Any tips or advice would be helpful. Thanks.
-Rob

Oh, one last one, do you guys know of anyone who is doing the NHSC? Can you send their name my way so I can ask them a few questions about it? Thanks.

hey protease..
I might be interested.
PM'd you

If you don't have a dog and are single, my suggestion is to hold off on getting a dog. There will be days will it will be difficult to get home all day and the dog may not be understanding of your absence.

I'd have to defer to other folks on the housing thing. We ended up buying a house in Arundel and did not rent.

Hm. My situation is a little different. i have a husband, two kids, and two dogs. My hubby works graveyards, so someone is darn near ALWAYS home. Exercise? Our dogs love nothing more than to curl up on the bed with us (except the mini dachshund - he curls up IN the bed with us). So dogs? I love mine... love the way they snuggle in my lap. Love the way they're always happy to see me. Personally, I couldn't NOT have one, but I'm not single.

Living places. Not right downtown biddeford. Pool is good, some other places not right downtown are good. Saco has some nice places to live and they're nicer than downtown Biddeford. Although I hear they're renovating Main Street to put lofts in above the stores (and that should be nice). I will say that nowhere in Biddeford is really unsafe... no shootings or anything like that. The fights that occur are mainly downtown. And there are darn few of those. It's a pretty safe place to be.

Like Wook, with a family we bought a place, so the above information is based on knowing a bunch of cops and other students' experiences and preferences.

🙂

How did you get a mortgage with only 1 income?

stellar credit. And I mean STELLAR credit.

we owned a home in our previous location, so we had 25% down on this home. Even so, the mortgage is higher than our previous home (the new house is MUCH more expensive, even tho the interest rate is about the same as the old mortgage) and the house is much smaller.

There seems to be myth that you NEED two incomes to get a mortgage. We have never had two incomes for a mortgage application. Our first home I was VERY pregnant and was not currently working. This home I was a student. You do not need two incomes to qualify for a mortgage. You only need squeaky clean credit, a good work history, and an income that shows you can make the payments. Keep your debt down (other than student loans that is), and you can purchase a reasonable home in a good neighborhood with an income of $40K.

I still have yet to find out my credit score 🙁

annualcreditreport.com
You are entitled to one free annual credit report from each of the three credit agencies. The above link will get you to all three agencies. You really should check it annually - you wouldn't believe how many people have errors on their credit reports.

just checked. thanks.
everything seemed 👍

ok back to unecom..

How well does UNECOM students match w/ their residencies?

We have a few people in our class (2010'ers) who have dogs and manage to get home during the lunch hour or whenever a decent break in the day presents itself to check on their furry friends. They do live either in Biddeford Pool, Hills Beach Road area, or right near campus just off of Pool St/Rte 9.
I live on the other side of Biddeford near the high school in a building with 3 other medical students. There is a 3br house right behind us opening up in the next 2 months or so if anyone is interested. Pm me. My landlord prefers to rent to us medical students.

Wook, I LOVE your new icon!!!
So, what is this I hear you used to be a radio personality? Or am I hearing things?

Congrats to all of the new acceptees! Relax, enjoy the next few months! Don't let senioritis take you over completely (if it applies to you).
We're working on putting together another Osteoblast this year (Rob went last year I think). Hopefully sometime in April or May. Keep your eyes peeled!

Okay...back to histology!

just checked. thanks.

I think you had a very nice packet of information in the folder you received on your interview day specifically outlining where our graduates are going for their residencies. I'll have to look at my special folder of tour guide goodness to verify that. If you have misplaced it (shame on you) here is a link with the same information:

I'm a true Mainer living in Saco, if I can help anyone with anything related to Maine please let me know. I'll be happy to do what I can. I did live in Honolulu for two and a half years before returning home last year, so if you are also interested in catching a few waves before class starts let me know about that too!

Anyone else start to find housing? I am looking for a place on the shore for me, my girlfriend and my two chesapeake bay retreivers. I am spending 1200 month for a 3 bedroom with 12 acres in the mountains right now and I am willing to take out enough loans to live comfortably while I go to school. I have been using the link on the UNE page and looking around but it looks hard to find a place in biddeford pool that takes dogs. Anyone have any ideas? Are you going to visit soon and scope out housing? If leases start sept 1st what will you do for aug? I just want space, a yard for the dogs, and no roomates....
