Ahhh...exciting stuff but I have not actually gotten out that much lately....I hope to take june just for fun stuff no matter the obvious financial consequences.

Lets see some faces-post your mug for your classmates. I am not starting as my face is already on my avatar but I will post if others do🙂

Dave, Whereas you are jumping off mountains and talking people down out of their meth induced hallucinations, I am merely working at a small school for kids with developmental disorders, autism and other such neurological impairments; and also those with severe emotional/behavioral setbacks. So you get to injure yourself tumbling down the mountains on teles, and I get injured by 13-15 year old kids with multiple felonies who dont want do learn grammar but are in love with sex ed. Yes, it does sound a little like the Michelle Pheiffer movie, "Dangerous Minds," but the kids only think they are ghetto. I really love my job though, even in the midst of getting spit on, kicked, bitten, punched, threatened and urinated on.
Anyway, my gf and I are heading up to Maine this weekend to check out some housing and try to meet up with some current students I know. If anyone is heading up, definitely drop me a line. Take care everyone.

😎 Hello, hello,
It is good to see posts... I don't know about you guys but I simultaneously can't wait to get this party started and feel like I have a ton that I need and want to do before August and there just doesn't seem to be enough time.

Anyone heading to Maine please feel free to drop me a line. I live in Saco and it would be nice to start meeting fellow classmates. I know a lot about the area so I could be a good resource.

Just a little info on what I am doing and have been doing: I finished my undergrad at UNE and did a fair amount of research in the Pharmacology Dept. I then went to Hawaii and worked for a company doing clinical drug trials and also worked for a biomedical research company doing autopsy research. I have been back in Maine for a little over a year and have been doing everything from landscaping to substitute teaching to working with individuals with developmental and acquired disabilities to doing a little consulting for a small company that does clinical trials for the herbal supplement industry. None of this and especially the latter is nearly as sexy as it sounds. I can probably relate more to Rob than Dave but also being an adrenalin junkie I fantasize about action packed exciting stuff! I never should have sold my surf board when I left Hawaii!

I was out at Higgins Beach today (~20min from UNE) and there were probably 10 or so surfers and kayakers hitting some pretty good waves - it was a beautiful day! This morning I also did Mary's Walk, which is a popular local fund raiser for cancer research. It's a nice feel good event for a great cause. Anyway, I am now resolved to get out and find another board (I actually suck at surfing but I still love it!). I also hope to get out and string together the Maine section of the Appalachian Trail before class starts. I did a few sections several years ago and hope that I can squeeze that in somehow. Anyone interested in 1 to 3 day treks into the woods let me know!

It's late, and before I rattle on too long I'm going to sign off. But before I do know that if you are in the area you can stop by my house. My fiance and I will open a nice bottle of inexpensive wine and we can toast to our future as physicians...

Cheers,
~Jas

Hey Guys,
I just wanted to let you guys know about this awesome ride before I depart. Also, if it looks like a good cause, please help support our beneficiaries. These guys really do awesome work abroad and save tons of lives. If your really interested keep up with our blog at rideforworldhealth.org.
Thanks, Mark

“A Journey Across the Nation to Meet Needs Across the World”

Dear Furture Classmates,
This April and May I am joining RideforWorldHealth (R4WH) on an exciting journey across the U.S. Our goal is to fight Global Health Inequities by increasing awareness. All along our 3,700-mile ride we will be giving lectures as to how we as Americans can prevent unnecessary human suffering worldwide. In order to get our message out we will be stopping at hospitals, schools, city halls, and everywhere in between. In addition, our organization has chosen two beneficiaries who provide critical care for the underserved, both in the U.S. and overseas. The Global Health Access Program (GHAP) and the Pendulum Project are renowned for their extraordinary work on various health problems in the developing world. For decades they have been mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS on children living in sub-Saharan Africa and providing primary health care services to the poor of Southeast Asia. Without fundraising events from groups such as R4WH, these organizations would not be able to directly save and improve the quality of life of those they serve.

I am writing to ask that you join R4WH and myself, so that we can achieve a “victory for humanity.” Together, we can work to assure adequate primary healthcare services are available and accessible to all people, no matter where they live. Accomplishing such goals requires that we make new friends and find new sponsors.

Not everybody has the time or energy to ride a bike across the country, but we can all respond to this challenge set before us. Please consider an online donation at www.rideforworldhealth.org/donate or donate by writing a check directly to “Ride for World Health” and forward it to (P.O. Box 8234 Columbus Ohio, 43201). Please reference my name when donating, as each rider is asked to raise a certain amount for our beneficiaries. Last year in our inaugural year, with small donations from individuals such as you, we were able to raise over $100,000 for Partners in Health (http://www.pih.org). This year we would like to make an even bigger impact. Thank you for your support.

Respectfully,
Mark Pedri
Passionate Public Health Professional and Medical Student

P.S. To learn more about our wonderful beneficiaries, please visit the Global Health Access Program (www.ghap.org) and the Pendulum Project (www.pendulumproject.org). If you are unable to help us reach our ambitious goal of providing quality health care for those who need it the most, please forward this letter to others whom you think may be more able to at the moment. Remember, no donation is too small. Pennies save lives. Thank you for your time.

Good luck Mark!! I'm proud that someone like you will be joining UNECOM!
....Healthforall....!! fabulous! PS. It's super easy to donate- they have PAYPAL..yey.

Adorable, small 2 Bedroom, 1 bathroom furnished house for rent on Hills Beach Road. We pay $750/mo for the whole thing. Heat, electricity not included (the house is very well insulated). Perfect for one person or a couple. We're right down the road from UNE and a few steps from the beach. Bikes are included in the rent as is everything else...totally furnished- even comes with a lobster pot! Great landlords. SEASONAL RENTAL FROM SEPT.1-MAY 30th (1st year). YOU CAN RENT UNTIL THE END OF JUNE (after board exams) 2nd YEAR.

We've loved living in this little house for the past 2 years and will be sad to be moving into hospital housing for our rotations. PM me if interested.

Does anyone know what the status of the class is? Is it already full and are they sending out "accept space letters?" I just had my interview today, but could not get a clear answer from anyone. I hope there are spots still open. Also does anyone know how often/when the admissions committee meets to make decisions? Thanks!

Hey everyone!

My name is Alla and I am 21 from Brooklyn, NY. I just got my Bachelors in Life Science (Bio focus--surprise surprise :meanie: ) and ended up with a semester off. Im working at a Medical Office doing a bit of billing and collections; which will probably be useful since I want to own my own practice in the future. I work directly for a Psychiatrist so I've learned some interesting tid bits--it's a TOUGH field! I'm also using this time to be with family and really enjoying spending time with my newborn nephew! 😍

I am currently set on UNE as my school of choice and am VERY excited about that. I actually just finished booking a mini trip up there in the first week of April to take a look at some potential apartments and areas for living. I'd love to hear some feedback because I am so scared to go up there and end up homeless! :scared: Where can I find listings? How far in advance should I set up appointments to look at apartments?? So many questions--so little time.

hey ppatel1185. i also interviewed w/UNECOM on the 8th and one of the interviewers told a couple of the interviewees that the class is full. my interviewer never mentioned that so who knows. hopefully that's not true. i haven't heard an answer yet but then again it's only been about a week. anyway if i hear anything i will post again.

Last year we had someone accepted off the list literally the first day of school. He got the call that morning, threw some stuff in his car and drove to UNE to make the afternoon session. Hope springs eternal. 🙂

As for ending up homeless - that's no big deal. Truly. There are usually plenty of folks willing to lend you a couch for a while until you get on your feet. (I borrowed one for my whole family - no kidding.) There are plenty of folks here to help you out. 🙂

Yahoo!! We just rented our dream apt. We currentlylive in a bostosn shoebox, so space is a novelty. It was tense there for awhile, b/c someone else also wanted it. But, in the end, we won out. I can't wait to get there. It has these strange things called a closets..........

rgerwin-

any advice on finding a place? resources?

I have used the online link from UNE to the classifieds and their own postings through UNE housing but the dogs are weighting me down as many do not accept pets. I want to live in biddeford pool, and if not there, within a bike ride so i dont have to drive my truck....

was your rent $$ pricing good? Near school?
dave

So, we're living in Portland, so I won't be much help on my own. I can suggest the portland maine newspaper and craigslist. I've even driven around looking at for rent signs, though that would obviously require a separate trip.

Good luck!

just a quick word of advice, don't rent a place on the word of a real estate agent, or with only having pictures of the inside, without seeing the area that the place is in. there are some places in biddeford that you probably wouldn't want to live if you can avoid it. Not that its completely unsafe, but there's a lot of options here in biddeford/saco many of which are in better areas.

Kelaskov and anyone else who is a current student,
What did you do for the first month of school before you moved in to your house? I am pretty set on a place off Hills Beach, but wont be able to move in until Sept. 1st. Any advice for what to do for the first month? Thanks,
-Rob

PS. Because of the storm this weekend, I am postponing my trip up to Maine until next weekend. Anyone interested in meeting up for dinner or drinks?

I agree completely. I would just change the word "some" to "a lot of".

It seems like we are going to have a fabulous class. I can't wait to start networking with you guys. Just curious, how many of you guys are passionate about serving marginalized population and are humanitarians at heart. Even from interview day, I got the feeling that UNECOM is full of socially and environmentally conscious individuals that truely aim to make the world and their communities better places. Did I get the right vibe? I hope so because I love to feed of the positive energy of such individuals, they inspire me. Hopefully we can all inspire one another.
Cheers,
Mark

thanks to all for the housing info. --and could you specify what "a lot of places" that you don't want to live in would include??...just out of curiousity 😕

shotwell--the waiting is the WORST part no matter what the answer b/c in the end you just want to know. i completely sympathize, but hang in there!!!!! and from what i understand--no matter what the decision they will notify you by mail. as they explained at my interview..it's too big of a deal to just e-mail you.

on a snowier note, how was everyones weekend?

^^ i am hoping that was the last snowfall of the season...

Hello future classmates! I'm soo relieved to read that a lot of you have the same housing questions/anxieties that I do right now! I was hoping on making a trip up to Biddeford during the first week of April to check out a few places. I definitely want to be around the Hills Beach area, but the Sept 1st lease thing does leave a few questions looming over my head about August. I was thinking of staying at a hotel for that month, but perhaps that would be economically impractical...has anybody from the previous class done that?

hi everyone!

i just accepted into the class of 2011. 🙂 now i'm searching for a roomie for next year... so if anyone is interested, please let me know! i'm so excited and overwhelmed right now!

Kelaskov- Your place sounds great. I'm in contact with another gal and we might be up for renting it. Is there someone we should contact to show our interest and to look at it?

Mystic, I know people have done the motel thing, but you have to understand - August is prime vacation season here. You might be hard pressed to find a reasonable hotel room for a month, and it may be prohibitivly expensive. You'd be better off to find a couch to crash on for a while, or try and get a lease that starts August 1.

Thanks ShyRem, I'll start exploring my options..I might be making a trip down this Saturday, would anybody in the Hills Beach area be available to give me a quick peak inside the apartments then? Just want to get a quick look of the interiors 🙂 PM me if able/willing to do so please.

Mystic, wish I could help you - but I bought a house. Seeing as I'm not rich, it's not on Hills Beach. *sigh*. Someday I really want to live on a beach. Just to have the experience of a big ol' storm so I can watch the waves come crashing onto shore while I sip mulled cider (or mulled wine, or hot toddies, or homemade caramel macchiatos, or.. .well, you get the idea).

And BTW: this week COM is on spring break. So probably half of us will be gone still trying to deny the work that awaits us, and the other half will be struggling to learn all that bacT, pharm, and phys for our upcoming exam block. Be kind to any poor med student you see.

Hey all. Anyone going to be heading up to Maine this weekend? My gf and I are going to be looking at apartments on Sunday and would love to get together with some future classmates. Drop me a line here or on AIM, name is robparker54. Hope everyone is doing well. Just a few more months.

hey newhampshireldy...just curious as to when you interviewed? i interviewed march 8th and heard from some of the interviewees that one of the interviewers told them that the class was already full. any info would be appreciated and congrats! 😕

LayZ, that rumor of the class being full has been perpetuated by interviewees (yes, supposedly told by interviewers) since January 1. And I will tell you that acceptance letters (not waitlist, but real honest to goodness acceptances) have gone out since then. Two batches at least.

Take what you hear from other interviewees with a grain of salt the size of a bus.

Has anyone completed the FAFSA yet? If yes, did they NOT confirm you are US Citizen and now you have to send proof to financial aid office.

FYI it will take une 2 weeks once they download your FAFSA file to process it.

Has anyone received any unecom mail other than the "how to login into myUNE and U-Online". I called Unecom, tech guy said, that mail was not suppose to be sent out so soon because they have not completed your login access to myUNE. That will be done by April and he also said not to worry because there is not any relevant intel on it currently.

^^ thats basically the only letter i got too

hey guys! i just found out about this website through my friend who also will be in the UNE class of 2011. I just wanted to say hi to everyone and that I'm so excited to start and meet all of you! I go to Penn State and am from North Jersey... about 10 min from NYC. I'm 22 and a Nutritional Sciences major. My friend and I both have similar concerns as to what will happen with housing if we cannot rent any apartments before September? We tried to make appointments to go visit some apartments the Monday after Easter but most of the people we called said that we should wait till May or June to find a place? did anyone else have similar experiences?

Yeah I'm waiting till May-June, possibly April, and will go to Maine, hire real estate agent and look for housing (apartments w/ 2 Bedrooms; will need roomate) in Saco/Biddeford.

I hear everyone is very helpful and is willing to lend you a couch at their place until you can rent your own. Congrats on your acceptance. I'm going to assume we all get @une.edu email addresses, so if your out of luck, email the entire class beforehand and I'm sure at least one person will reply "you can stay here..."

We started seeing May 1 apts. available mid-March, if that's helpful. I would say earlier than May for 8/1 is probably too early.

I got the financial aid application specific to UNE. You have to choose a lender, etc, etc, for your Federal Loans, and estimate the amount of federal you already owe. They said 2-3 weeks after that we should get a package.

Is anyone moving to Maine as early as me (mid-May)?

Thanks for the reply Shy. I actually received a letter today that placed me on the "Accept Space Available" list. The letter says that there are no current vacancies but I guess this still means i'm on the waitlist.

Hey intrepid warriors😱 ,

Congrats on getting in. You're going to the best COM out there so be proud of yourselves.

I'm a third year and I own a house in Biddeford, right down the street from UNECOM. I rent only to UNECOM students as they are the only ones I trust.

The house is at 81 Clifford Street in Biddeford (feel free to mapquest it). It's a quiet neighborhood and the houses are not too close to each other. There is a huge back yard, 2 car garage, washer/dryer in laundry in basement, 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, living room, study rom, kitchen, dining area, wine cellar and bar in basement, screened porch, and more...

Rent is $450 with sewer and water included, but other utilities are not included.

One person in your class has already signed on for next year. This house is a UNCOM icon.

Feel free to email me with any questions or to have pictures emailed to you or to set up a time to come by and see it ([email protected]).

talk soon,

Romeo

JUst got the medical/vaccine stuff in the mail. Polio vaccine?

It would never have ocurred to me that would be on the list.

They want people with BCG vaccine to go through the 2-step ppd test, whats the point, I know for fact I will get a false positive and then will need chest x-ray done.

Also my Tetanus/Diptheria is over 10years old, I know it means I must get vaccine again. My concern is an overdose of vaccine, resulting in me getting sick. I'll run a titer, if possible, and see what vaccine dosage I can get.

Well, apparently I did get the polio vaccine when I was a kid (thanks mom!), however that was in 1981. Should be interesting to see if I can find a copy of that anywhere. My pediatrician already laughed at me.

Prior to moving into our house first year, we rented a room from a MS2. We stayed with friends during the first few weeks of 2nd yr. We did the summer search program (NHSC) between first and second year and housing was provided so moving out of our house for the summer wasn't a problem.

We didn't have much stuff to move as the house we're renting is furnished. We basically kept most of our clothes, etc. in our car and just slept at friend's places, studied at the library, etc.

Luckily, we're able to stay in our house until the end of June this year. Moving out/scrambling to find a place in May would definitely be stressful since it would cut into our board prep time (people generally take COMLEX and USMLE at the end of June 2nd year).

LazyAss2I- Sorry to not get back to you sooner. My interview was around the end of February and I found out 5 weeks later that I made it into UNECOM. I know the waiting is a pain and I had the urge to kick my mailbox a lot. Good luck and I hope you're able to get off the waitlist soon!!!
