*^*UNECOM Class of 2011*^*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
 Hey there class of 2011. If any of you are looking for housing, I have a 3 bedroom 1.5 bath house in Biddeford with a fenced in back yard. We have trying to sell it but the market sucks and we are thinking of renting it for the year. We are moving for residency. The house has been completely renovated. It is a pretty big house with lots of storage and off street parking. It is really close to Hannaford and only about 10 minutes from school. Rent would be $1100/month. Let me know if anyone is interested. Email me at ([email protected]). I have pictures I can send. 👍

Why can't I still log onto this? I haven't had a chance to call the helpdesk. Has anyone gotten any feedback?

Yeah so I emailed the and got a response way back in March. At that point they said they would load the class or 2011 in mid April but nothing as of yet so it is probably just whenever they get around to it.

They only give private loans to UNE. I'm having one disbursed this monday. It was super easy, and better rates than BOA.

sorry, my quote thing didn't work. that was in response to my rich uncle.

Hello all,

My wife (Eva - who is just finishing up her 3rd year at UNECOM) and I are looking for housemates for next year. Our house is about 8 minutes from campus in a nice residential area and has a nice yard with a deck overlooking a private backyard. We have two upstairs bedrooms available (17' x 16' and 17' x 13') that have big closets as well as a shared coat closet. We share the kitchen which has plenty of space for everyone's food and dishes. The upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom. We have off-street parking, laundry, wireless high-speed internet, and a really nice home theater system - you know, in case you are ever finished with your studying 🙂 . We also have a housekeeper who comes every two weeks and the smaller bedroom is wired for DirecTV. We are looking for people who are friendly, respectful, neat, and value a good home study environment. Non-smokers only and no uncaged pets please. Rent is $530/month which includes all utilities, the internet, and unlimited long distance phone. If you are interested, PM me or email me at [email protected] and I will send you pictures of the house and all the rooms as well as a phone number where we can be contacted.

Cabot (and Eva)

Could someone please give me feedback good/bad on the following laptops:

MacBook Pro
Sony Vaio FE890
Dell E1505

All laptops are set to 2.0Ghz 2nd generation Intel core 2 duo (santa rosa) with 1GB 667Mhz DDRII Ram, highest quality screen resolution with respect to each laptop, and 3year onsite warranty.

Please help me narrow my choice to one, any input provided will be helpful.

Thanks.

Edit: Sony and Dell let you choose to run Wins XP instead of Shista (vista), and the SP1/2 for shista will not be available probably till early 2008. So if I get a PC laptop, I can run it in Linux (Linspire), therby avoiding the stupid bugs.

I am rocking the Dell E1505 with shista right now.. the e1505 is considerably lighter than the previous models inspiron 8500/8600. Dell sticks with plastic materials to lower costs. I've had it for about 3months and 2gb ram should be the minimum if running vista.. the speed is relatively the same as xp but it makes multitasking a bit easier. The Aero interface is pleasing to the eye. The computer runs relatively cool. - it rarely goes over 40deg. Centigrade.
i really dont like the flimsy plastic buttons under the touchpad.
Also, they got rid of the easy access 2-screw hatch to clean the fans under the computer. now you have to take apart the whole bottom just to dust out the fans.. PIA. imo.
Battery life is much reduced w/ Vista. I got the upgraded battery 85Whr but i can only get 5hours on it with dimmed screen 🙁

overall i am satisfied w/ the e1505, makes a good successor to the inspiron/latitude. I like the 15.4 screen, nice and bright, the whole package is not too heavy, nor bulky. Relatively quick processor Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB) for all the light computing I do. i got mine priced at $1700 with 3year full accidental warrenty + lojack. I say wait a while longer and i think you can get a better deal. If possible definitely get 3GB/4GB ram if going with Vista. good luck.

I personally have never owned a Dell, but seven people in my class have had their Dell's crash on them. Highest crash rate (tied with Gateway) that I've ever heard of.

Sony seems reliable but pricy.

Everyone who has ever owned a mac won't let go of it and I've never heard of one crashing.

Personally I have a Lenovo tablet. But if mac had put a tablet out, I'd have bought it in a heartbeat.

So bottom line from seeing folks use and abuse them over the last few years:
#1: mac
#2: sony
#3: dell

yea i was originally gonna go with a MBP but it was $500 more with the same specs as the dell.

i received a nice welcome postcard from une today.. how nice :hardy:

Hey Vlad,
I have the E1505 Dell Inspiron and I love it. I got the highest upgrade graphics card and the highest resolution screen to go with 2GB memory and 1.83 GHz processor. I havent had any problems with it whatsoever. I got it during the Presidents Day sale for 25% off, then got a 3 year service plan with accident forgiveness which got me another 7% and then I am a teacher so I got 8% more off of that price. Ended up costing me around $1300 down from like $2400. I have brought it to the hospital and had a few docs check it out including loading an x-ray and MRI onto it to check out the resolution. Seems to be good enough for them and it looked great to me. Hopefully you get something that you like. Hope this helps some. Take care.

What about a Sony Vaio FZ

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7300 / 2.0 GHz
2 GB DDR-SDRAM (DDR2-667, 1 GBx2)
120 GB Hard Disk Drive
CD-RW_DVD Drive
15.4" WXGA HiColor with Web Camera
NVIDIA® GeForce® 8400M GT
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Large Capacity Lithium-ion Battery (BPL8)
802.11a\b\g\n with BT
3yr onsite warranty

Cost is almost 2K including tax+S/H, pretty good considering its a Sony. I might get an Asus laptop, decisions decisions....

what about ibm think pads?

If my Lenovo tablet got stolen, run over, or shot (It's a Thinkpad - Lenovo = IBM), I'd run out and buy another one within the hour. Not even a thought.

And, btw, the student that sits next to me had an old computer that bit it during the school year. He went out and bought a tablet (but an HP - it was cheaper for him. I didn't care for it, but it IS pretty sweet for the weight and price). He wouldn't even look at anything else after seeing me use my tablet.

Mac...hands down...especially if you want quality and ease of use without Shista hassles, or Crappy Dell construction.
Sony...meh...they are overpriced and full of their own extra BS.
Mac, not as pricey as Sony, not as cheap as Dell (don't let those "extreme markdowns" fool you, Dell grossly exaggerates their deals).
Educational discount with Apple is about $100 off the mid to high spec MacBook and about $200 the MacBook Pros. Educational Pricing
So, if you want straight up quality, are willing to live on the edge to learn a new OS, and ease of use go Mac. I used to work for them, I'm pretty good at troubleshooting anything Mac related. Also, with a Mac, you get international coverage for service. When you call Tech Support, its someone in the US and if you are near any of the Apple Retail stores you can bring your Mac to them for advice, help, tech support and service. You don't get that from Dell, Sony, HP, Gateway (their retail stores died a loooong time ago) or Best Buy (the geek squad is overrated). IM, PM or e-mail me any questions or if you just feel like it.
UNECOM 2010...1st Year is OVER!!! Woooo HOOOOO:hardy:

My name is docbill, and I was a PC user!

It was hard for me to stop my addiction to PC and windows operating systems. But one day I found the light.. well.. it was the apple on the computer that lights up when the labtop is on... and now I am a Mac User. It is as addictive if not more.. but its just better for your health.

Now its like I have a best friend. I take my MacBook with me everywhere... to class, to my room, the library, to movies...everywhere.

you should try it.. hear the word of the apple

What is all this talk over these labtops? I thought the votes were for tablets in medical school? Everytime I go to other school class threads, people are getting tablets. I am going to get one, but it is a bummer that they are less fun-some with no cd/dvd drives, less memory, etc etc. but for note taking I am thinking I should do the tablet. I hated carrying a binder of notes around-I will just write on the screen and save the trees...

I am going to UNE tomorrow to show my girlfriend and hopefully tour our new apt we signed into without ever seeing in person....

Went to my sister's graduation at UNH yesterday and saw bill clinton and g.h. bush both give speeches-pretty awesome. Both were well spoken and doing good work. Clinton is cooler. came back from colorado to go the grad.

well peacy weacy
dave

so when is everyone planning on buying their computer? are you waiting until financial aid comes through or buying before school starts. i'm almost sure i'll be getting a mac but the thought of a tablet has me intrigued. i hope you all are getting ready to have a great summer before we start. only 8 days of work left for me.👍

Is anyone else thinking of ignoring the 1280 X 1024 minimum resolution requirement? I have been looking into a lot of different laptops, and it is hard to find one with that fits this requirement. To get it on a mac I think you need to get the 17". I do NOT want a laptop that big. Also, with the tablets, I wasn't able to find one with a resolution higher than 1280 X 800 or something like that. (Any current students have feedback on this? What we really need?)

Dave, I got my Lenovo tablet with 1G of RAM (a freebie upgrade during their back-to-school specials in july). You won't miss the CD/DVD at school - just get a 2G flashdrive (they were $30 at Walmart last week). You can use the CD/DVD at home on your dock, which I would recommend since some books come with extra stuff on CD.

The tablet was really awesome to be able to write on, draw on, highlight, take notes right on the ppt files on your screen. Folks with regular computers did the type in the note section thing with descriptions of what the note was about. I could circle the part/figure of the slide and write directly on the slide whatever I wanted to scribble about.

And take advantage of the MS Education pack for tablet pcs - it has a freebie flashcard program that is really pretty nice. You can swap flashcards with other folks, and it will play them front/back timed (like 5sec. front/ 5sec. back) picking cards at random. Really nice for studying stuff like immuno, pharm, bacT, etc.

Ignore those requirements. You don't even need a computer. The lab in the library has a bunch. I never brought mine to school because when I had it, like most people you will see in class, I waste time on the internet. None of the classes require computers. You classmates will hand out power points of radiology, histo slides etc...maybe even your professors. But yo ucan look at those on a home computer or in the library, or on any old laptop. Bottom line, unless you want to buy something fancy, don't waste your time.

Now enjoy your last moments of freedom, your life will soon suck bad.

Oh seriously, 1st year is not SO bad that you'll never ever ever have fun or see the light of day. Enjoy this summer, don't start studying yet! That is LAME! Wait til your first week of Gross, then start studying.
Ignore the stupid resolution requirements for the laptop specs. I use a 12" PowerBook G4 with 1024X768 Res. I've never had an issue with viewing any of the powerpoints, movie clips, pictures, etc.
I would recommend having a laptop though. It is a very useful item. I take mine everywhere. Wi-Fi is a wonderful thing. Especially with a lot of the course content being online for most of our classes.
So, seriously, ignore the scary scary people saying "enjoy your time while you still can b/c there is ultimate doom and darkness approaching" (aka 1st year). Go in with an open mind and be prepared to study like its your job...well, it will be.

Also, I would wait to get a laptop until July. Apple usually has its "free ipod with purchase of computer" deal going in addition to the free printer deal. Also, if you do get a Mac, get Office 2004 for Mac Student Edition ($149.95 for the full package!).

^^ WOW that is incredible. 😱😱
it comes fully furnished & includes all amenities.

Hey guys! I am new to this whole web page, but if you have any questions just let me know... I am one of your orientation leaders..

Question for all of you: ANy of you on HPSP scholarship, any of you going this summer???

get a smaller computer.. easier to cary around. YOu can always get a big flat screen for home if you really want to play video games and woried about the pixelation... etc.

BTW, you guys are lame for not liking my post... what does it take to impress you guys.

i think your post was hilarious...i kept imagining the music from the "i'm a mac and i'm a p.c." commercials

Hey guys, I know this is a bit of a stretch, but this place is unbelievable. check it out http://maine.craigslist.org/apa/334916115.html

Anyone interested... three bedrooms!

That place looks awesome!!!! Too bad its so expensive, $1,167/month, but it looks unbelievable, especially the indoor swimming pool. I wonder what the owner does for a living and how much that place costs to buy.

I'm going to get a Asus C90S. It's the first desktop replacement PC, meaning, you can actually remove parts and replace them without needing to go to a store, plus this makes components cheaper both to fix or to purchase. To quote someone "finally a laptop which isn't going to be out of date in 30minutes".

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsid=3616

In case you want to buy one (link below):

http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=C90S

With 2GB and 120GB HardDrive plus 3 year warranty it will cost $1,600. If you get this laptop I recommend getting Windows XP 64-bit, you can always upgrade to Shista (Vista), but don't do it until the service pack is released and it won't have problems.

I never had the desire to take pieces of my labtop appart and upgrade them. Just get a new one... and in two or three years get another one.

BTW, class of 2011,

I know some people may not like this suggestion, BUT

I would suggest you pick up a Gray's Anatomy For Student text book and start reading through it (GET A NEW ONE). I wish I could find the old sylabus so I can share it, but unfortunately they took it down off webCT. Don't worry about atlas yet.. since it is best to have those while doing disection.

Also if you don't mind reading... I would also go through a human embryology text book. Nothing for memorization.. just to get fimiliar with it. I would not even buy one.. just take one out of your school library or get a used one.

Those two subjects are the big ones for first trimester.

Immuno was pretty big too...

But I disagree with docbill. Don't do ANYTHING med school related this summer. You'll be doing nothing else soon enough. Enjoy your ignorance and bliss now.

And, BTW, I never read my Gray's Anatomy for Students. They probably removed the syllabus partly because you'll be having a new anatomy prof. But I do recall we did limbs then torso then head.

lol maybe its just me this morning but i read the posts above like...

😀 Hello out there,

I have a great housing option for people still looking for housing or who want to change their current housing situation. I am renting a 3 bedroom and 1.5 bathroom in Biddeford (near five points and Hannafords). I am graduating and we are looking to rent it out for the year. It is a great house, we bought when I first started med-school and gutted the whole thing. It has been completely updated. There is a large fenced back yard and plenty of storage. It is only about 10 minutes from school and the beach.
We are asking $1000/month. We will take care of the water and sewer. We will provide washer/dryer, snowblower, and lawn mower. The rentee will be responsible for heat, electric, and phone. This is really a great house and we are sad to leave it. It would be perfect for a family with 1-2 small children or a group of students wanting to split the rent.
If you are interested, e-mail me at [email protected] I have pictures and even a video I send you. We can also arrange a time for you to look at it. Hurry, it will go fast!
Better yet, here is the website with the pics

Take care and talk to you soon

Well, my advice has fallen upon blind eyes, so I'll take a different approach:
START STUDYING NOW!
DO NOT HAVE FUN THIS SUMMER!
BUY A PC (Tablet, Laptop) with SHISTA!
Seriously...

Advice from a recent UNECOM grad:

Don't study before you start!!! Enjoy the little free time you have left! trust me on this one!

I went all 4 year w/out ever buying a laptop. I had a desktop at my apt and this was fine. It's a theoretical requirement but certainly not necessary.

Just my two cents!

Good luck!

That is true.. my first advice is don't do anything.. enjoy life.

However for some of you (including myself).. and you know who you are... if you have been out of school for a long time... or have lower GPA.. etc... then I would look into doing something... getting fimiliar with things.

The rest of you brainy people... don't do anything

SHYREM.. you going down.... me vs. Shyrem.. see you at the park after school.

We are all going to have different opinions on stuff, which is the great thing about these forums. Everyone has valid points and different styles (which is why our advice can sound so schizophrenic at times). 🙂

I hope we haven't driven you over the edge, YET (we'll try to do that later).

My opinion is similar to several other posters, which is to take the time off and recharge over the summer. You'll have plenty of time to look at the books once school starts.

Wook

Cool. Someone record it, please and e-mail to me? Uh, y'all may want to put some rules down, though. Shy may cheat and bring some of her hubs hardware to the discussion.

Wook

You got it! I'll post it on youtube 😀
I say they can only use Jones Tenderpoints to take each other down.

Excellent. Some of those tenderpoints are used by the local constabulatory for pressure points. Just depends how much pressure you wanna use...... And what you use to put the pressure on.

And wook, it's not cheating if it's not in the rules. 😉

Hi All, Just completed the Ride for World Health ride across the country! Now, my girlfriend and I are able to start getting ready for Maine! We are still looking for a place clearly (see last post!) and a job for her... Does anyone know any nurses up there who can offer her insight? She's a new grad looking at Maine Medical and Southern Maine, but it's nervewracking to do from another state!

We will be up for a week starting next wednesday if anyone is around for a drink.

Thanks and hope everyone is well!

wow did you do the full "ride across the US" or the partial?
it is an amazing peat! 👍 i was beat after riding 50.2 miles yest 😛
I bet you guys took lots of pictures on the way huh?
I am uber jealous.. i wanted to do something like that for a while

I just got accepted into the 2011 class today and am extremely excited! I drove down to Biddeford from Portland and chilled on the beach after I found out, what a sweet spot to study medicine.
