Does anyone know how far in advance the interviews are at UNECOM? I know a lot of schools have scheduled through January and February. How late do they interview? I actually have still not gotten my supplemental application yet because they wouldn't give it to me until I finished organic chemistry 1. I just sent the transcript last week. I would imagine I will get the supplemental sometime this week. My husband is really pushing for me to complete it and I do like the school, but I feel that it is so late at this point that I wouldn't have any chance of getting an interview and that it would be a waste of money. Besides, I am REALLY excited about DCOM and have already put down the $2000 deposit. The benefit to UNECOM (at least in my husband's opinion🙄 ) is that it is only four hours away from where we live vs sixteen for DCOM. We have a lot of family here. Should I bother with the supplemental or not? Thank you all!😀 :luck:

As far as completing the supplemental...I think you and your husband should figure out which school you really want to go to. It sounds to me like DCOM is your preferred choice and you've already accepted at that school. Completing the supplemental would depend on where you want to go. Why waste the time/effort if it is not high on your list?

LOL! There is this thing in marriage called COMPROMISE!:meanie: It is a lot more complicated than what school I want because of the fact that I am married and have four children. DCOM is definitely my first choice, but I promised I would keep an open mind at look at UNECOM if I had the chance. I just don't want to waste the money on the supplemental if I don't have a chance at an interview because it is so late.

Thank you DRKUBA. You were the one that posted the great pics from there, right? It looks beautiful.

Hey,
Great to see a fellow Capital District'r is on the forums and interested in a wicked sweet school like UNE. I'm originally from Saratoga, was living in Troy and Albany before moving up here to Biddeford, ME to attend UNE. I'm also one of the illustrious tour guides for all you interviewees/applicants/interested folks. 😀
So, as far as I know you shouldn't give up hope quite yet. We are just about to fire up the interview machine this week and keep it stoked for quite some time. Double check with the admission people about your OChem grade and if you might be expecting a supplemental.
Good luck!

I was really interested in the school before DCOM, but I am just am concerned that it is too late. 🙂

Its not too late until after classes start and you might end up really liking the school....

I definitely am getting a supplemental and I checked with admissions office already. I hadn't taken the class before and the policy is not to send it until pre-reqs (except for organic 2 and biochem) are completed. They should get the transcript any day now. Where did you go to school for your undergraduate? I went to Russell Sage. It is nice to know there are other people from the area. My parents live in Loudonville and my husband's parents live in Troy, which is why we wanted to stay in the area. I have heard wonderful things about UNECOM and I actually want to practice rural family medicine. I absolutely LOVE DCOM, but would like to look at UNECOM anyway. Thanks for the info!😀

LOL! True. I am already interested in the school. I was one of my top choices along with PCSOM and DCOM. I got into the other two, so it would be great to see the other school that I was interested in.🙂

I agree with the other posters then...go for it! It is a great school in a great location AND you would be close to family.

To fozziewan,
Do you have any idea when should I expect an answer from UNECOM if my interview scheduled on January 15? I read somewhere that it is about 4 to 5 days, but wondering is it really so soon?
Also, I know, I know, but still, on the interview do students come alone or bringing their parents/husbands/wifes, etc. with them? And should they bring them or not?
And one more, maybe you know about loans? Is it only Standford or something else and are there start charging % from the day I used the money or they hold until I graduate?
Sorry for so many questions, but so far I have a full scholarship and never had to deal with all that.
Thanks in advance

I just called the office to see if they had received my transcript and talked to them about my application. They hadn't, but I asked about where they were with interviews. They said that they were booked through the middle/end of February and would interview (I think) until the end of March. The woman looked at my application and told me that the 6 I have in PS would probably be an issue and she advised me to save my money. I appreciated her honesty. So, as much as I wanted to look at the school, I will probably not do the supplemental and save the money. So, I guess I am moving to Tennesse.😀

So, if there is a chance at all, we will only be interviewed in March.
I didn't include UNECOM in my primary ( I thought I did, but silly me!), but after hearing all the great things about the school, I am thinking about adding in the aacomas. But it's probably too late. Maybe I should save my money too. 😀

I don't know. I think your GPA and MCAT is better than mine, so maybe you would have a chance. I would be hesitant to add anything at this point as many schools only interview through March or April at the latest and many are already booked through February or even into March. That doesn't leave a lot of room for interviews. I would imagine that the classes are pretty filled by this point as well. Oh well, I guess it wasn't meant to be. I LOVE DCOM and I had the option of some other schools if I had wanted it. I believe that everything happens for a reason. I felt that I was meant to be at DCOM, but I was trying to make my husband happy by looking at schools in the Northeast. UNECOM just wasn't meant to be. Good luck to all of you still waiting. :luck: Tennessee, here I come...😀 😉

Hi Slavia,
Okay, so heres the deal with decisions: can happen 5 days or 5 weeks after your interview, just depends on when the adcom meets to make their decisions. You could bring someone with you but they won't be able to go in the info session or the interview with you. For the campus tour, I think that would be cool. Usually students come in by themselves for the info session, interview and tour then meet up with their friend/family/spouse afterward to explore campus and the beach area.
Financial aid...I'm not the one to talk to about that, contact them. Im on a military scholarship so I'm a lil out of the loop with financial aid specifics. I do remember while in graduate school that the interest accrued on my unsubsidized (i think) Stafford loans and also on my private loans. I think you could visit the financial aid office while here on campus after your interview session to see if they have any information available for you to take and start looking at. Hope this helps. Good luck!
Cheers,
Steve

I was at UNECOM yesterday. A beautiful school indeed in a quiet, peaceful town. Ideal for studying! On top of that, all the students were very helpful and generous.

DoctorMom, i am in the same situation with a missing prerequisite course. Steve & James Gaffney told me that as long as you have an enrollment certificate and complete the course by (i think) May2007, it will not affect your app status.

Good luck!

Did you get a supplemental? I was missing orgo 1 and that was the problem. I guess if you are missing biochem or orgo 2 they don't care because they have the distance learning program. Did you interview yesterday? I have heard it is beautiful up there. :luck:

Okay I checked out the UNECOM website. OMG the place is gorgeous!

I was raised on an island so living near a beach (even if it is the COLD N. ATLANTIC) would be sweet.

UNECOM just got added to the list ( perhaps for next year).

When I was at UNECOM a month ago, they mentioned that they interview into the spring (late spring, if I remember correctly). I wouldn't say it's too late. They are very family-oriented up there, and it's at least worth checking out. Their supplemental is $55 and their deposit is $500. Good luck in your decision and congratulations on your acceptances 😀

From what I remember, it was definately into late spring. I think April.

Yeah, I definitely remember someone saying they had heard in May--they had applied late.

How long is everything? I meant, if the interview day starts at 8:30 or so, when should I expect to be free, 12:00, 1:00 later, earlier?

Thanks

Generally, most people finish by noon, 2PM latest. The earlier you interview, the earlier you will be done. You can extend your time there by attending a lecture. Good Luck and bring some warm clothes, its chilly brrr.

We were done before 12 (more around 11:30ish, if I remember correctly). There were only about 7 of us, so the interviews went quickly, and there were different interview groups. We came in, talked with students, got free food & snacks. Had a really quick overview of the school, talked to more students, waited to be interviewed, then a tour. Hope that helps! 🙂

Thanks for the reply.
In regards with cold, I am from Boston, so the weather is pretty much the same here and there! 😀

Also, I just realized that UNECOM does not provide dorms for the DO students. Is it true? We have to rent somewhere? My question than where and how much it usually costs? How we should rent, for a year or 10 month?
Thanks

You have to rent. There is a building in Biddeford where many of the students have apartments.

did you find housing already?
i hear if you find a roommate & get a house to rent, its relatively cheap 3-400/mo?

super cheap housing in most of Maine. I'm going to live in Portland, and that is still very reasonable.

To live in Portland you need a car and if it will snow, you won't be able to drive!
I don't want to bring my car here!
How much is the rent? Ranges I meant

In my experience, you can't live in Maine without a car. I don't like it, either, b/c I'm used to cities. As far as snow goes, the highways are usually fine, and I would never own a car without AWD. That's why subarus are so popular, b/c it's a standard feature.

Rent ranges from ~$400-500 for a studio and up to even $1500-$1600 for a swank condo in the West End. I imagine Biddeford is about $800, or so, for a 2bdrm.

Right, utilities. Again, it just depends on what you want. A basic cable/internet package is about $100 before taxes and fees. Adding a landline would be more. In S. Maine, though, you can get away with just a cell, if you want. I would definitely get a rent that includes heat and hot water. You don't want to be responsible for your heating bill, especially if it's oil. Electric is anywhere from $20-$80/month, depending your lifestyle and number of people in your home, your stove type, etc.

I have a wife and 3 kids so I am looking for a townhouse in portland where my girls will go to school. It is relatively cheap. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms on 2 floors for 1050/month.

+1 for Subarus (well i am biased. but here is my pitch anyway)
1st they practically last forever.. i put on 106,000miles in 3years w/ no problems
2nd AWD is spectacular in most harsh conditions.. I've never had to shovel snow yet.
3rd Tons of Added safety features. i believe the forrester and the Legacy/Outback series got the 2007 safety pick of the year.
4th Cheap to mod for power if you are into it. Turboback & ECU tuning is good for additional 40whp. And lots of bolt on turbos for the STi models that will put you in the 400+hp range easily.

I just wanted to say that my transcript was sent to UNECOM over a week ago and I still did not get my supplemental. I emailed them yesterday to check and they didn't even respond to the email. I think I am definitely going to save my money!!! 😡:meanie: I will take it as a sign. Oh well. Good luck to everyone interviewing there!:luck:

Oh c'mon, it just takes some finesse with FWD (front, not four which is usually denoted: 4WD)

In all fairness, they probably are just getting back into the swing of things this week... They probably received an influx of transcripts, too, as well as new applications, etc.

Maybe, but I just think they don't like me....🙁 :meanie:

call them. They don't do email very well. They've never responded to mine and I've been accepted.

DoctorMom - honestly, I really think you will find UNE a very good fit for you and your interests, and I've thought that for a while now. It is worth going through with the application process. Think positively about your application there & plan to see it through no matter what - they would be glad to have you, and we all know it! :luck:

LOL! It just seems like it is a sign. I JUST WANT THE SUPPLEMENTAL!!!🙁 Ok, just for you if they ever send it to me, I will finish it. 😉 It was definitely one of my top choices back in the summer, but it seems like everything keeps pushing me away from it. Thanks for your opinion!😀

Maybe it is a sign that is saying, 'Are you SURE you want to come here?' and pulling the finish line back another 10 yards to see if you will keep running forward! 😀

LOL! Hopefully you have the essay questions already so you can fill out the supplemental & send it back as soon as they finally send it to you. You do, right? (If not, I'll find mine and get you started.) Eh - what's another $50 (or is it $75?) in this ridiculously expensive process, anyway?!! 😳

LOL! So true about the money! Someone from the admissions office (Maybe James Gaffney?) sent me the questions ahead of time so I could complete them. I thought that was a good sign, but then everything else seemed to be a bad one. 😕 Who knows! Thanks for the offer on the questions though.😀

Great! Well I had pulled them up just in case... Anyway - I really loved that they sent the questions ahead of time, don't you? It just made me feel like they really make the effort for students there, and they have a good idea what people are going through and do what they can to make it easier. That told me a lot of good things about the place. Hang in there!

Definitely give them a call. It's a very good school and prepares you well for whatever specialty you may develop an interest. If you really like the school and are accepted, you will probably appreciate its proximity to family (and your old haunts in the Albany area). It may be a bit challenging to drive 16+ hours to visit family (or to fly). DCOM would seem to be a great school too, though. It will be great to be able to have the option to choose where you want to go!!

The drive is the only down-side to DCOM. Everything else is perfect. So, I guess we will have to see what happens. Thanks!😀
