Univ of Washington Interviews for 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
According to their interview schedule, the next EXCOM meeting is on January 11th. Then it looks like they meet at least once a week after that.

Merry Christmas to all and best wishes for the new year!

Most of the meetings in Jan/Feb are going to be for WWAMI folks. So Washington Residents will be waiting a bit longer! :scared: :scared: :scared:
I think the EXCOM doesnt meet to discuss WA regularly during this period.

I think this first January mtg. will be for WA applicants though, since it's before WWAMI interviews. So, I guess we have one more chance and then we wait for March... 🙁

Oh yeah, the Jan 11th meeting is certainly for WA residents. You are right, I guess I couldnt articulate earlier about the rest of Jan and Feb. 🙂

Good luck Ya'll!

Hi everyone, I called the office of admission yesterday and they told me that the next EXCOM meeting is on Jan 13, not Jan 11. Can someone call them again to confirm this?

BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF US. :luck:

I called yesterday and they told me the 11th! 🙁 Damn this is confusing!

I just called and was told the next meeting will be on January 11th at 2:00 PM.

I got a really easy interview, and that worries me. If I had a 42 on MCAT and a 3.9 GPA I wouldn't mind it all that much. With no ethic question, I thought they just wanted to do the interview for that sake of formality. Anybody else in the same situation?

I agree that this is so confusing. I talked to one of the advisors of the admission office and she told me jan 13. I think she forgot to check the interview calendar. Since two of you already called and confirmed Jan 11, I think the next EXCOM meeting will be next Wednesday.

BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE :luck:

Wow. I wasn't aware that anyone got interviewed at UW as a "formality."

Somewhere in their admissions literature they explicitly state that any applicant from the WWAMI region with GPA and MCAT above a certain score gets an automatic interview. That says to me that they do in fact offer interviews to people who have very little real chance of acceptance as a 'formality.' They could have something like 3.9 GPA, 40 MCAT, and zero clinical, research, or volunteer experience, for example.

I understood him/her to be saying that the interview was merely a "formality" before being accepted, which I find to be not only extremely cocky but patently false based on the numerous people I know who have been rejected from UW with 35+ MCATs.

Whatever...My point is UW is not easy to get into no matter who you are. Not only do you pretty much have to have top-notch numbers you have to meet numerous other criteria to make it.

Cocky?!! I am saying that I don't think my stats are very impressive. How is that cocky? As far as I understand the process, as long as you have a GPA above 3.5 (I think), an average MCAT >9 and you are a WWAMI resident, you'll get an interview guaranteed. By this, I knew that I was going to get the interview. However, the interview was nothing like what I expected. Example: They said that they were going to ask some ethics questions. They never did. No healthcare question. It was very much like a friendly chat. Well, not very friendly, but I was not asked anything super hard. I wanted to know if anybody else has had a somewhat similar experience. I am not complaining. It is just suspicious.

I don't think he was trying to be cocky about it. It seemed the poster meant that he is unsure of the strength of his candidacy and was afraid that UW was just going through the motions because he was an in-state applicant with good enough to make the cut off for automatic interview.

ack! simultaneous posting. Now it looks as if I was trying to be all clairvoyant when the poster had already explained himself. ah well.

Thanks for your clarification anyway. I read the interview feedbacks, and it seems that my interview was one of the easier ones. Of course, it is also dependent on who the interviewers are. I am interested to hear the recent experiences.

GPA > 3.5 and avg MCAT > 9 will grant you an automatic interview. Sometimes, people just get interviews that feel easier than other people. I don't know if this correlates with acceptance rate, because a lot of applicants feel like they had terrible interviews and yet were accepted.

Just to make my point very clear if it is not yet. I have a feeling (don't know how reasonable it is) that a mildly challenging interview is better than a super easy one. Very hard interviews might be very good or very bad, I think only time can tell.

Someone on my interview day said he didn't get an ethics question either, even though we thought everyone was supposed to get one. I got two, so I think they were trying to make up for it 🙄 . In any case, you arn't the only one, but that wasn't me so maybe this isn't helpful.

... Wait a minute, maybe you *are* the only one... what day did you interview on? j/k

I don't think I am the one you talked to, so there are at least two of us. I missed the lunch and everything. I just went for the interview. Quick question for those who have already been placed on the waiting list or been accepted: Did they update your status after the first EXCOM meeting following your interview?

I think this is answered earlier in this thread. In any case, not necessarily. If you get waitlisted (still being considered list, the actual waitlist isn't made until mid March), they send you an email around the middle of the week after the first excom meeting post-interview. When you're accepted your status will change to say that 'An action has been taken...'. That's when you call the office and totally freak out.

Did anyone notice that the EXCOM meeting date was erased on the calendar? The interview calendar was modified today! 🙁 Does anyone know? I've called already this week so if someone could confirm this that would be awesome. (I think they might recognize my voice by now)

So Did The Excom Meet Today? If Yes, Did Anyone's Application Status Change?

not yet 🙁

it is still early to panic. if the EXCOM meeting was today, then it takes a day or two for the admission office to update our status. don't worry.

what's this talk about the calendar being changed and the excom having not met at all? I don't even know where to find the excom meeting calendar.

Go here: http://depts.washington.edu/mdadmit/interview/

then click on the interview calendar link at the bottom of the page.

It says last updated on 1/11/06 and they took out the darkend box on Jan 11th.
I think they didnt meet yesterday.

oh thanks! Yeah, it looks like they didn't meet, so does this mean the regular WA people have to wait until the 20th to be reconsidered? Are they only discussing Alaska folks this friday?

I called admissions this morning... They in fact did not meet ton the 11th. 🙁
The EXCOM Meeting on the 13th is reserved for MSTP and Alaska Students.
The EXCOM Meeting held on the 20th for WA state applicants. I hope there is something good for all this wait! Meanwhile... I will be studying for my classes 😴

I am 100%. I called and got confirmation from two people on the phone that The 13th was not for WA state apps. only AK.

that sucks, we have been waiting and hoping to get some good news. it's been more than a month since the last meeting right?

UW says that people can either be accepted, rejected or put on hold after their interview, but has anyone actually heard of someone being rejected post-interview? It seems like everyone just gets put on hold.

Just curious...

I know of someone, this person interviewed on the same date as me. This person also interviewed with the same panel as me right before. This person was rejected. I guess it really does happen! (This was in Nov.)

Totally. They met on the 9th of Dec. This process has given me more wrinkles and gray hairs than my whole life so far! But I still 😍 UW anyways.

Here is to a GREAT 2006.

Has anyone received a e-mail recently? I just got one that put me into the competitive pool.

What is weird is that I interviewed in early January, and am a WA resident, but I thought that the EXCOM meeting was on the 20th, so this early response confuses me....

i interviewed 1/9, am out-of-state, and also just got put in the pool...

I was placed in the pool on 12/12. My status online hasn't changed, but that doesn't mean non-WAMI people did not get discussed at the last meeting. I probably just didn't get taken out of the pool.

I'm thinking that at these other EXCOM meetings that seem like they're only discussing WAMI people, they probably still discuss the WA/OOS people interviewed since the last meeting and accept/comp pool/reject them. 'cause there aren't that many WAMI people to review. But it probably is true that for competitive pool people, we are not discussed at these excom meetings.

does that sound like a plausible theory?

I know this might have been discussed already, but can someone kindly explain how many different pools and list exist. I have an impression that there are more than one, and depending on where you land, your chance of getting in might vary.

Thanks

As far as I know (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong), for people from Washington, there is one "competitive pool" of applicants about who a decision has yet to be made (either reject/accept/alternate/ranked alternate list). Final decisions about people in this competitive pool can be made at any meeting up until the last meeting of the year (sometime towards the end of March), but usually aren't made until that final meeting. There is no ranking of people in the "competitive pool"; rather, they are each supposedly brought up at every meeting and reconsidered.

Hope that helps.

What is the alternate list then?

Gij said:

You can be put on the alternate list after a *final decision* is made at that last meeting in March. There is a ranked and unranked alternate list; apparently you are almost guaranteed a spot if you are on the ranked alternate list, but very unlikely to get a spot if you are on the unranked list.

alternate list= waitlist. just fancy wording is all. Like the "EX"COM, when all other schools call it the adcom.

Thank you all, so here the waiting game officially starts (for me)!!

I'm in the same boat (except in-state). Interviewed 1/6, was told EXCOM was meeting the 11th, surprised to get a "competitive list" email today.

At the lunchtime overview of the admissions process (Dr. Fero presiding, IIRC), there was mention of times the EXCOM failed to actually meet, for whatever reason, in which case your file would be reviewed at the next EXCOM. So if they didn't meet the 11th, met the 13th to discuss AK apps (with a different EXCOM composition--Alaska-specific delegates would have been on the committee), and discussed other applicants also, that would be a bitch if it disadvantaged non-AK applicants. Then again, it was Friday the 13th...

My feeling is that, despite the vagaries of the application process, the UW tries to be conscientious of fairness to their applicants, so my conspiracy theorizing is probably just the product of an application-preoccupied mind.
