I noticed something about the Universal system today. Opposite pairs of teeth on the maxilla add up to 17. Opposite pairs on the mandible add up to 49. Occluding teeth numbers add up to 33.

I have dug around on the web for some historical info on the numbering system to see if this was an intended result (it's hard to believe it wasn't) but so far I have come up with nothing. Anyone know anything about it?

I think that's just what happens when you number opposing sides in a sequential manner like that.

Hummmm.....wow.

Perhaps you should start an entry on wikipedia. Truely novel scholarly work is hard to come by these days.

You know....they must have had the same reasons for making the clock the way they did....if you take the opposite numbers and subtract them, they are magically always the same:

11-5=6
10-4=6
9-3=6

you have definetly stumbled on something big...someone should check the old mayan calender....

Been smoking a little there Bobby? Don't worry, you can admit it. We are all friends here.

Joke all you want, but there is a practical aspect to this "discovery".

If someone tells you to name the 1st premolars and you don't have the numbers memorized, by knowing the upper right is #5 (by counting?), you can then calculate that the upper left is #12, and that the lower right and left are #28 and #21. You know these numbers are absolutely correct because 28+21=49, 28+5=33, 12+21=33, and 5+12=17.
