I submitted my FAFSA today and it told me that the Direct Stafford Loan estimate is $20,500.00. Sorry if someone has already asked this but 20k isnt going to cover pharmacy school if I get in... Do you think they will adjust it after taxes are filed and once we know for sure if I'm going to pharmacy school or do I have to try to seek other loans like maybe through sallie mae or something else?

$20K? Yeesh. I'm going to need at least $30K.

That reminds me, I should probably apply soon 😀

Yeah I just did an estimated FAFSA cause we haven't filed our taxes but its priority deadline is March 1st so I wanted to get it done ASAP. It feels weird filling it out not knowing if Im going to school next semester yet or not. Only one more week! 🙂

You'll be eligible for grad plus loans depending on your credit. The college also offers scholarships.

Do they take into consideration both my spouses credit and mine or just mine? I have an A rating credit score but his is B-C. :-/

Well, only about a week until we hear back now!

Im beyond excited!! I cant wait to hear. Not sure if that's a good thing or not.... My hopes are soooo high. I wish I was more nervous and less excited so that if I don't get in I wouldn't be as heartbroken.

Got denied =(. Can't say I'm not surprised I suck at interviews. Anyways good luck to everyone else...

Oh gosh! Im so sorry!! Did you apply to other schools? Or are you just going to try again next year? When did it update? Did you get an email or just status update? *nervous now*

It's not the end of the world, especially if you have another year or two of undergrad! GL friend.

I heard someone got an acceptance today. Been refreshing the status page like cray cray!

Application Status for Fall 2013 Admission

Status Admitted
Congratulations! We are pleased to inform you that you have been admitted to the College of Pharmacy's Pharm.D. program at the University of Arizona. Final acceptance to the 2013-2014 school year for enrollment of all accepted applicants is contingent upon terms and conditions specified in the admissions letter. Admission is also contingent upon receipt and complete evaluation of all your transcripts.

:claps:

Were you the one who got into a ton of schools? You're going to have a fun time (pulling out your hair and) deciding where to attend 😉

I'm a resident of AZ, so I will probably be going to UA because of the tuition cost. UA is a great institution as well.

Just checked and I got in too! So excited. Congrats everyone

Wooo!

Now I gotta decide on UCSD or U of A 😕

I'd do UCSD unless you're an AZ resident.

EDIT: Their curriculum is pretty innovative. Partially structured like med-schools since many folks are looking more and more to PharmD's as providers.

I am so happy 😍 , to be moving to the warmth! Love Utah, but shovel the snow is breaking my back! Congrats everyone else; and good luck to everyone else!

Not an AZ resident, but my SO of 3 years is a resident of AZ and would certainly like me to go to AZ. Thanks for your input though 🙂

I haven't gotten full financial aid info from either place, but it appears as if U of A would be about $20,000 cheaper over 4 years if I was able to receive in-state tuition for the second two years. This is just based off of general numbers from the internet and my best guess work that I could manage.

I didnt think you could receive in state tuition after you enroll as an out of state student but I could be wrong. That's how it was at my previous university so I might just be mixing them up. I'd recommend asking the financial aid office before making any decisions.

I will, but I'm pretty sure you can off of what their website says. You just have to prove that you are living in AZ with the main purpose of being a resident and the secondary purpose of being a student. If for instance we got married and had a kid in AZ, got an AZ driver's license and plates, and made an AZ place my main residence, I think I'd have a pretty good shot. Nothing is guaranteed of course though.

Yes you can as you stated; here is a link, http://www.azregents.edu/policymanual/default.aspx, with all the legal wording for it, I thought it stated after the first year was completed, Change Driver License, Plates, Voted, paid state income Taxes (declare residency). But things can always change. The $18,000 discount would be nice though!

Congrats on your acceptances; but do not stress about the choice ..... it is good to have options. God forbid something happens, like not getting Finger Print Cards in time, or not having you immunizations done! Those would be some things to stress about. 😀

Wait listed 🙁 Anyone know how many applicants get wait listed? Congrats to everyone else.

Not sure how many applicants got waitlisted but head up! don't despair... I heard so many people got taken off the waitlist last year!

I'm going to have to decide between UCSD and U of A, so you can always hope that I will free up a spot 😛

😛 That's a hard choice, you can't go wrong with either one 👍

I have the same decision to make...how's it going for you? I'm torn-- I thought I knew I wanted to be in Tucson, but now I'm second guessing myself!

Poorly. I keep flip flopping back and forth. I thought I wanted UCSD for sure, but now I'm not as sure. I'm still leaning towards UCSD though

I'm very much in the middle--the students at the U of A just seemed so happy compared to UCSD (maybe because of the difficult curriculum, but I really like how it's set up). About to make myself a pro/con list. Good luck in your decision! I'd love to hear what/why you decide when you do! 🙂

Haha I got that same vibe too.

If you care, here is my list of things each school does better. Sorry if this is getting off topic to others.

UCSD:
Internship (I have a few connections in the area, one working at UCSD medical)
California is nicer living (to me), but I have heard that coastal California is very saturated.
Smaller class sizes
Transportation (shuttles to and from campus, closer to family)
Rigor -debatable, but many of the students said that the 2nd year med school classes made it much harder. I can see the benefits, but I can also see how that time could be better spent than trying to be pseudo-MD's.
This one isn't logical or rational, but I still think about it. UCSD had ~1400 apply, and I was one of the 60 accepted. UA had ~200 apply, and I was one of the 100 accepted. I feel like I had to fight harder to get into UCSD.

UA:
Cost - big one
Professors - Someone else made a comment that maybe this shouldn't be rated too highly as most schools are going to have a pretty good mix of great, okay, and bad professors
Arizona is not as nice living to me, but I have heard that it is less saturated.
Older, more established name and alumni network
Curriculum - As stated above, I kinda do like that they still have the main focus on stuff that is pertinent to the field of pharmacy. I guess this is also debatable, because maybe UCSD is just more on the cutting edge and their curriculum is where pharmacy is going as a profession.

Those are the things I could easily distinguish and quantify for myself personally. YMMV.

I was surprised to hear that UCSD only accepted 60/1400 when they are ranked 23rd while UofA accepted 100/209 when they are ranked #10.

According to students and staff at UCSD, the curriculum is so difficult because of the second and third years where your basic science courses are taken with the medical students. However, I didn’t mean to downplay the difficulty of UA’s curriculum because you’re right, it’s hard to compare curriculums directly. Like BobbyK said, that time with the med students may be better spent elsewhere, but I think it comes down to both your learning style and your goals in pharmacy.

I read about it a little on the website, but was hoping you might be able to expand on UA's interprofessional education with the med and nursing schools?

Your list is pretty similar to mine. Another thing I liked about the U of A is all of the extracurricular opportunities and student organizations--there's so many ways to get involved. UCSD is open to forming any club you want, but it's just nice how established UA is. I also haven't decided if the pass/fail system at UCSD is a pro or a con.

It's nice that you have connections in the area—I have heard that it's difficult to get residencies in CA if you're out of state, so that may help you later on if you choose UA (and if you want to do a residency). A student at UA told me 25% of students who apply for a residency get placed, but I haven't been able to find a statistic for UCSD. I feel like 25% is pretty good, but I don't have much to compare to.

One last thing that I thought was cool about UA is how they help students attend different pharmacy conferences. My student escort at the interview told me they pay for the conference registration fees and then give you $200 for travel accommodations. It's part of our tuition, so I guess we're really paying for it, but I still think it's neat that they encourage it and networking with other professionals.

We can take electives in any of the other health professions colleges/programs. We also have interprofessional socials, activities, etc. throughout the year. They are working on expanding our interprofessional curriculum currently so in the future there will be more options.

25% of students who apply, or 25% of students? I thought the UC schools have about an ~80% placement rate of students who applied.

Ndooda, do you have any more information regarding residencies at UA? I really want to do at least one residency but I was under the impression that there weren't many opportunities in Tucson. I really liked UA too, even more than UCSD, to be honest. The students and faculty were a lot more approachable than at UCSD. Rxlea is right. If UA moved to PharmCAS there would be a lot more applicants. UCSD's applicant pool also comes from the fact that it is in San Diego, and it's a UC, which automatically gives it prestige even though the school just turned 10 years old.
