University of British Columbia Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
FNH 200 and CLST 301 are popular choices for electives. I'm going to wait till the 4th year to take the Phar elective because you have more free time. 3rd year is supposed to be the toughest year.

To add on, IHHS courses are quite popular as well. Useful when you practice, and the marks are generally very high. Would add FNH 355 too. If your schedule is light, you can take PHAR 453 in your first year to satisfy your PHAR elective requirement, though you'll probably end up taking other PHAR courses in the much easier 4th year (definitely be prepared to work in 3rd year, not exactly the time for electives).

453 says enrolment restricted, does this mean there are very few seats? Or does that mean I would have to get special permission to take it? I definitely have the room for it (I would have 27 credits for the year and this would cover all of my electives for the whole program).

I just got my admission offer!! NexuScalibur contact me!! I owe you a dinner!
Hang in these guys, keep waiting!

Congratulations on getting in. You should probably buy that dinner for the first person who helps you out in pharmacy.

Good luck to everybody else awaiting admission. I figure I'll post my stats just as a gauge

Accepted (but declined offer)
PCAT: 95
GPA: ~87 (I didn't calculate it properly)
ECs: Nothing pharmacy related, a couple of tutoring activities here and there

Haha, ok. Btw can I ask why you declined the offer? Did you get an offer somewhere else?

Well friday is coming around. I hope tomorrow we get our waitlist emails for the ones who haven't got them yet, I'm tired of constantly checking and I just want some closure now to be honest.

PHAR 453B 013 (Directed Studies) - year 1. Other sections restricted to year 2+

I applied three times as well, once with the interview panel method and then twice with the MMI. Went from missing the cutoff by 4 spots to being ranked 4th from the bottom (that hurt for a while...) to getting in last year, so anything is possible. I think 4 times is quite reasonable, especially if you feel pharmacy is the right fit for you. I'm sure you've heard stories of people in med having needed to apply 5 or 6 times before getting in, just need some perseverance sometimes.

Thanks so much for your reply, it was actually really really encouraging 🙂 I actually haven't heard real stories of people applying to med school 5-6 times before getting it.. anyway, your story was really encouraging as well. Good for you for persevering! That must've felt so great when you finally got the acceptance! I'm thinking I will try again next year... I really fell in love with Vancouver when I visited for the interview 🙂

🙄 Don't love it too much, seems like we get rain every day or if we're lucky, every other day. And good for you on striving to try again for next year, another 300+ days to reflect and improve on your abilities. Plenty young anyway 🙂, what's another year.

Just got my acceptance, I'm going to decline the offer. Hopefully one of you on the wait-list get the offer!

I'm waitlisted. Grats to all that got in! I'll be patiently waiting

Got accepted! but will be declining to go to U of T. Good luck everyone!!! 🙂

may I ask why you chose U of T? I'm still deciding where I want to go and could use any information available haha

The SSC has been updated now! We can accept our offers and see our registration dates 😀

Hey, I had a question about the pharmacy electives requirement.

12 credits. 3 in PHAR and the other 9 credits are in that pharmacy-elective approved list. Now, if I've already taken courses in that list for another degree (those 9 credits), will they make me take different ones to satisfy this requirement or will they still count?

Oh, I'd be so pumped if I didn't have to take more classes. 😀

They will give you credit for them, I'm getting credit for the 6 credits from outside of the faculty and 3 credits for the pharmacy approved electives (I only have to take 3 classes from that list with one of them being a pharm course)

Awesome. Thanks!!

I think if you have the choice, choose U of T! 😉

If you do and I get in, I owe you a dinner also! 😛

I noticed a few people declining their offers to UBC. I am wondering what your reasons are? To go to another pharmacy school or another program entirely?

Maybe it's based on when UBC was informed that you were accepted? I had to wait 3 full days (accepted Tuesday am).

I declined the offer because I am choosing to go to UofT's pharmacy program.

i'm deciding to go to u of t. i'm out of province for both schools so i'll be moving either way. it's a very hard decision to make, and i just hope i'm making the right one. as for going to another program, i was actually initially accepted into optometry school last year, but here i am about to study pharmacy!

Wow seems like a number of you guys are declining. This gives more chances for us on the waitlist to get in! Thank you 🙂

I really hope I get in but for those who decline, I totally owe you if I do!

Good luck with your studies at other schools or career paths though! And again congrats to everyone else for getting in! And if you got rejected, well you'll definitely get in next time because you know what to do!

Does anyone know how to see a textbook list for the pharmacy stt courses for 1st year? bookstore.ubc.ca only has the summer courses available to look at right now. Is there a lot? Anyone know how many textbooks were used last year? (I know it's always possible that something changes for this year)

Oh! Which phar courses are the hardest in 1st year? What are some of the easier ones in comparison?

Only book you will require in first year is Therapeutic Choices, 6th edition, which is required in all of your years of study (moreover, I suggest purchasing from the Canadian Pharmacists Association [CPhA] to save yourself a couple of bucks - register as a student on their site). Rest of the books are available online as downloads/torrents.

All PHAR courses are designed to be simple in first year, you'll find out that all of them (apart from 202 labs) have averages of roughly 85%, give or take a couple of percentage points. But, avoid careless mistakes in the labs and you'll be fine there as well. Should be smooth sailing into second year!

i'm also rejecting my offer of admission! hope that someone deserving on the waitlist gets the spot!! 🙂

Oh boy I hope so! Good luck at U of T!

Did anyone get in off the waitlist yet?

thank you! well i just emailed them today but it seems that the director of student services is away until july 4th... so i'm guessing that only then will they read/receive my email and accept someone off the waitlist 🙂

I didn't receive anything today. 🙁

Would you happen to know how many people are on the waitlist?

Well the lowest overall ranking I know someone had was 250 so since they accept 224 I'm going to saw the waitlist has around 20-30 people but that may be completely wrong.

I would also just like to inform all you first years that LKS, one of our pharmacy fraternities, will be selling Therapeutic Choices (and other books) as well. There are still some things to work out but we can assure you competitive pricing with the CPHA student price as well the convenience of having the books there for you to pick up at school. Keep a look out on your year's facebook page and your first year welcome package for more details.

So happy to read this!!

I'm trying to register for courses at UBC right now. A program advisor made an error, so I can't register for courses (when I should), and may have to wait until August to do so. Been making calls and sending emails all day to get this situation handled...

Getting accepted off the waitlist is my ticket out! :xf:

In our technology email it says we need to bring a laptop/tablet to our pharm classes. Do we really need to bring it to every class?

Congrats to a waitlister! I will be declining my offer to attend U of T.

What type of stuff do you do in the pharmacy 299 problem session and the Phar 202 lab/tutorial? A lot of prep/writeups? A lot of lab techniques? Just trying to figure out which is easier so I can plan my courses.

Wow, I notice a lot of people declining for U of T or other schools. This gives me hope! Hang in there fellow waitlisters! 🙂

Also gives me hope!

I hope someone in this forum will get off the waitlist soon!

According to last years thread, some people who were waitlisted got off it on July the 6th.

Hey guys,

congrats to those who were accepted!

As an out of towner, I'm just wondering how fellow pharmacists are dealing with the living situation. Does anyone know if the faculty provides an area where students in pharmacy looking for roomates can communicate with one another? Does anyone have any pointers?

Also, if anyone has registration tips that'd be helpful!

Thanks a lot.

Just got off the waitlist. I owe the out of towners a dinner
