So I just got an interview at UCR...

Any opinions on being the very first class of residents here?

It's mostly going to be the county hospital. So it'll be a county style experience. Busy. Patients with poor social support. Fewer resources. Brush up on your Spanish. Though, would probably be a good training experience. Would also have decent fellowship prospects over at LLU at mininum as they pulled out for UCR to start this program and know the way it is there.

Hey Guys,
I just got the invite too. I was curious about the above poster's comment since on the website it is mentioned that the program is aimed at training primary care physicians. Any comment on this?
Thanks

I'm not sure what your question is . . . primary care physician can't get good training at a county hospital?

Not at all, sorry if I couldn't convey what I meant. I am under the impression that it is hard to get into a fellowship from a program that focuses on primary care since that would beat the purpose right? This is unrelated to quality of training or type of hospital (county vs. univs. others)
Hope this is clear now and look forward to an answer 😀

The focus on PC will be a minor issue. The fact that you'll be the first class out of a new program will be a much bigger one. But as jdh pointed out, you're going to have virtual in-house fellowship options at LLU. And the fact that there are no sub-specialty fellows will probably lead to a more intense (for better and worse) training experience.

This.

Thanks jdh and gutonc. There's also a program with somehow similar situation at Eisenhower Medical Center where the PD is the former PD from UCLA i guess.

I'm a current resident at LLU, so here's the scoop:

Riverside (RCRMC) is not for the faint of heart. As was mentioned, it's county. So yes, resources are limited, there's usually a different piece of paper for eveything you'll order, and the hours can be difficult. But....it's an amazing place to train! Once you come to peace with the "system" - life is groovy and no more difficult than any other facility. As LLU residents, we rotate at 3 different hospitals (LLU, VA, Riverside). If I had my pick, I'd spend the rest of my residency at RCRMC. The attendings are incredible. Tons of knowledge and experience. They've seen everything! They are true internists. Yes, it would be hard, but you will come out of here a stud.

Per LLU leaving: this is not true. Since UCR is new, the class size will be small (6-10??) and will slowly expand over many years. UCR will essentially be another admitting "team". Currently 5 IM teams are on every month (and yes, each is capped ~80% of time) - so the addition of another team will be helpful for everyone.

Per Fellowships: not sure about the "inside track" part. Many of the attendings at LLU have spent some of their training or career at RCRMC - so they will definitely understand what kind of training you've had. Bottom line: work hard, stay late, and read. If you do all these things you will impress someone and will get a fellowship somewhere.

They are taking 12. Doing tri at this hospital. Work like crazy but you get amazing training. Ucr is supposed to be 50/50 inpt and outpt. This program will make it up the lists for several reasons. First off, the pd is the former LLU pd and has been amazing in strengthening LLU. He will probably do the same. You will get county training, private training (kaiser), and outpatient clinical experience (riverside medical clinic). Sure it is a risk ranking a program that has not yet been established, but by looking at the people they have and having worked with many of these attendings I can say that it will be a good experience.

Does anyone who interviewed this year have any new input on UCR IM? In terms of fellowship chances and clinical training? When I interviewed, it seemed there were a lot of IMGs and wasn't sure about the training.

I think they have paper charts too. How would you compare UCR to others such as Santa Barbara cottage, St marys long beach, or even kaiser fontana?

UCR was my #1 choice. Clinical training is excellent. Program Director at UCR is experienced (he was the former program director for loma linda) and receptive to feedback. Training is at various sites, from a county hospital to kaiser, offering a wide range of clinical experiences in different hospital systems. Overall, very resident friendly program.

Bump.

Got a few questions for you guys. Hope someone can help out!

1. Does UCR have electronic medical records or still paper charts?
2. Any updates on pass rates of the boards?
3. I know Gutonc mentioned a while ago that UCR will have "in house fellowships" due to the PD being from LLU. Just wanted to see if there are any updates on that since I will likely do a fellowship.
4. Would love to hear from some UCR IM residents!!!! Heavily considering 🙂

Let me rephrase, I know Gutonc stated a while ago, "...But as jdh pointed out, you're going to have virtual in-house fellowship options at LLU."

Always appreciate the advice you give all of us.

Anyone have any updates on UCR?

Resurrecting an old thread in hopes of some new info/thoughts since they have graduated 2 classes now.

Anyone have any comments or thoughts about this program?

Thanks!

Literally just 2 cents....

A few years back when I interviewed, I was really quite impressed with the PD. I was impressed with the track for PC. They did iterate that coming out of this program for fellowship is something they support as well. I guess they tried to sell it as a regular program, but with a strong track if PC was what you wanted. Saying they're OK with you going for fellowship isn't the same as being good for poising you for fellowship, of course, so I don't know on that front beyond they seemed sincere in being OK with it coming up.

One thing that I liked, because I'm all about work/life balance, was that I think they had something very special about their schedule that was very resident friendly - I think it had something to do with golden weekends or overnight call. It was a different program that had figured out how to guarantee no more than 16 hr work days during days, for the whole residency except for the month or two of night float which is obviously overnight. UCR wasn't on that level. Actually, come to think of it, the special schedule perk may only have been for those going to a PC track.

I think as well, but this was years ago, they were one of the few IM programs that had a special dispensation from ACGME or the ABIM to drastically skew the schedule from inpt mos to outpt mos, as a pilot program to even out the "great hospitalist movement" coming out of IM at that point, ie to encourage more grads to go outpt rather than stay inpt on graduation. I don't know what ever happened with that. If nothing else, it's something to ask about.
