University of Hawaii at Hilo COP - Applicants for 2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, got my interview email as well. More than likely going to do Vegas. Just checking with everyone, but seems that school is super super expensive. I mean I did get into a few other schools, but just staying in Hawaii sounds so awesome...ugh the decisions.

How are you all planning to deal with it? I know probably loans and what not. But at ~18k a semester..attending will leave you in the gap bigtime. I tried to find out info about becoming a Hawaiian resident, but the lady said, as a Student, you couldn't become a resident hawaii AND attend school full time.

Anyways, figure i'd ask how you guys are planning to deal with this.

Thanks!

Ray

Hey Ray,

Yeah, the cost of living and tuition is pretty high. I've prepared for this by saving up since last year and will continue to save up until next summer if I get accepted. I'm also planning to pull out loans. If worse comes to worse, I'm just going to have to find a part-time job. I was hoping that I wouldn't have to work though so that I can focus on my academics. I've been working 2 jobs and attending school full time throughout undergrad and postgrad so I think it'll be possible to work and attend school. It'll be difficult though but it'll pay off in the end. Good luck on your interview!

How is everyone preparing for the writing portion and does anyone know what kind of topic we should focus on? I'm really excited about the interview but nervous all at the same time!

Hey did anyone here also apply
to CA Northstate? I applied through pharmcas since July and now I finally received an email asking me to complete their supplemental application. They sent me the supplemental attachment and is requiring me to have it complete by 3 weeks from now. From what I'm aware of, interviews have already been conducted. Should I still even submit the supplemental?

Rx girl, - I'm confused! My interview is also at 11:00 a.m. in Vegas on 12/12. Maybe they interview one of us while the other does the writing sample and then switch?
There is more then one faculty member there that will be interviewing applicants.

RxGrl; Hey I graduated from Central High School in Macon!!! I also got my supplemental fro, CA Northstate, and you should definitely fill it out and submit it immediately. They have rolling admissions and if you received an email to finish their supplemental, that means that you passed their initial screening (which could be just basic pharmcas statistics) now with the supplemental they will look deeper into your application. I've come to learn to never give up opportunities like that, you may never know.

As far as the HILO writing portion of the interview, you can check on school feedback on this site from previous students who had interviews. They will list their likes or dislikes of their interviews and what questions they were asked, both one on one interview and the writing portion. From what I have gathered, it looks like most of their essay questions are "what would you do, if your in a _____ situation?" type essays. I would continue reading posts, and threads on this site, it has lots of good stuff covering current medical trends and issues. I would also focus on the health and general well being of Hawaii, a little bit about their politics, their inhabitants, the problems they face there, the pharm school's mission and goals, and what they want out of a pharm student, and use all this information to present yourself on paper and in person interview as to why you should be part of their community. Remember, dont try to memorize facts and details, you will choke and stutter in the interview, this should be a fun part reading about a school and its state with interest, confidence, and will power. The rest is really up to God; you will be fine, I think everyone who is on this thread has already shown interest and dedication to their career goals. Good luck to you and to all!!!:)

GO GA TECH!!!!!!

I'm really nervous about the writing section also. I'm horrible in timed writing. It takes me 30 minutes usually just to think about what I want to write about! I was going over some of the previous interviews and just wondering if you guys new much about open versus closed file. It seems as if our interviews will be closed file which means they will not know what we put in our pharmcas apps, correct?

Right.

I'm pretty good at writing but sometimes it depends on the topic. Dreamer - if you are nervous about a timed writing assignment, why not practice a few times before you get there. Have a friend or relative give you a topic related to you or pharmacy, and have them time you. I bet you'll get more comfortable and you'll figure out some strategies for organizing your thoughts in a short time and under pressure.

If anyone here knows anything more about the writing assignment, feel free to pipe in!:D

i have my interview at 8:30 in the morning in Las Vegas 12/12. UGHH! why did they do this to me?! :scared:

i just hope i'm not groggy when i talk that morning, that would suck.

i'm flying in at around 3 to Las Vegas, hope to see some of you from SDN there. :)

Kern, I think you are going to be their first interview for that day! They are going to remember you so think of it as a positive thing :). Btw, good luck in your next interview on the 14th!

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to practice this weekend. :)

How long did it take the school to confirm your interview date and time from when you emailed them your preference? I emailed them Friday and I know its ONYLY Tuesday, but, I'm really hoping to interview on my 1st choice date. I'll give them until this Friday before I email them again in case they overlooked my email.

Dreamer,

I received my email confirmation two nights later after I sent them my preferences but it was before the weekend. Due to the time difference, I usually receive their emails around 10 p.m. my time so depending on where you are, hopefully you'll receive an email from them tonight.

Keep us posted!

Got my invite on Friday, received my interview confirmation today. I'll be there on Thursday :scared:. Go Hilo! :xf:

Dreamer & Kashkow,

Congrats on your confirmations! I would've been hap[y to interview ANY day if it wasn't finals week - so I'm relieved my interview is Saturday. Good luck :luck: on your interviews - can't wait to hear your feedback!

Congratulations to everyone getting an interview!

So having gone through the interview and writing sample last year in Vegas, I can give you a little bit of insight.

When I interviewed, there were two parts: interview and writing sample. How it worked for me was that the interview begins first (about 30 minutes), and then you have 30 minutes to write a short essay, using only the lines on one side of one sheet of paper.

The interview is pretty straightforward. I interviewed with Dean Pezzuto, and the interview was closed (meaning that he only knew my name and maybe a few other minor details about me). He didn't know that I was a reapplicant, nor my PCAT or post-bac grades. He asked the basic questions: Why pharmacy? Why Hawai'i? Why Hilo? Where do you see pharmacy going in your career?

Then there were the other typical questions about cheating/academic integrity, customer service (I wasn't a pharm tech when I interviewed so it probably was easier in that respect), etc., as well as the random off-the-wall question which for me was, "If you could have dinner with a fictional character, who would it be and why?" Finally, there is some time to ask particular questions to him, and this should be your chance to show that you've done your research about Hawai'i-Hilo and how you would fit in personally in Hawai'i, especially if you're a nonresident.

The writing sample is actually pretty straightforward. I was given one of two prompts to answer a question in the form of an essay, neither of which were related to pharmacy. You must follow the directions for this sample, meaning all your writing has to be contained within the lines of one side of a sheet of paper, since they won't read any notes that are read in the back. Here, they just want to know that you can organize your thoughts clearly on a random essay.

Hope this helps--and good luck to everyone interviewing!

stykrice,

Wow! :D thanks for taking the time to provide us with details of your interview/writing experience. It helps to have an idea what to expect!

Hi, all
I applied for UH last week. I am waiting for response now.
Anyhow, i envy you guys who already received the interview offer.
hope to see you guys all.

stkyrice, you're amazing. thank you! :)

Thank you so much rice. You rock! Hope to meet everyone in Vegas! I'm flying in late Thursday but won't be interviewing until Sat. Good luck all!

You're welcome guys...My belief is that if I can get into pharm school, anyone can get in.

I probably would've gone to Hawai'i myself--if I didn't get into UCSF. ;)

Seriously, good luck to everyone. I remember when I went to Hilo 2 years ago when I was first applying that I did like the campus, and I really did like the program and the opportunities that Hawai'i offered.

Oh, and some more advice about interviews (and I think this goes for wherever you apply, and not just Hawai'i or UCSF or whatever): be yourself when you interview. If you really don't know the answer to something, be honest and say you don't know. Don't pad your interview responses, because you probably will get caught. Your body language and expressions give away more than you think. And make sure you do your research about the schools you're applying to so that it looks like you've done your homework about the schools, and not just applying for a school because it's Hawai'i, or it's UCSF, etc. :)

Good luck!

Has anybody not received their confirmation to their interview yet? I sent my email with a list of my preferred interview dates last friday (Nov 6) and still haven't heard back

I received my invite the same day as you on November 6th and received the confirmation the following Tuesday evening. I would email them again just in case they overlooked your last email.

Hey guys,
Just finished booking my flight. How long do you think the interview will last? I'm hoping no more than 5 hours b/c I booked my departure flight at 5pm. I interview at 10am. Anyway, where is everyone staying at? I looked at the embassy suite rates and it's like $100+ per night. I'm thinking the HardRock Hotel or this one called Terribles Hotel & Casino. Only problem is I don't want to attend the interview smelling like smokes.

The interview itself is very short probably 40 mins max, and closer to 30. You also have the writing sample which will take up some time, a very loose estimate would be 2 hours total. You should have plenty of time.

hey everyone, i'm currently a p1 at uh hilo. if you have any questions, just send me a pm.

Hi rerwan-

I will be having my interview in 3 weeks in Hilo, HI. Do you think you can tell me what were some of the essay question they asked last year? It's my first interview ever and UHH is my first choice of school to go to.

Also, if you have any other advises, can you please tell me?

Thanks!

I'm staying at the Embassy Suites just to keep things simple. On my last interview (for another school) I had to take a taxi to and fro which was about $18. My room at the Embassy (incl tax) came to $133. Keep in mind that it includes a big buffet breakfast and a snack/drink reception in the evening. I sound like their spokesperson, don't I?:D It's just that I've stayed at them many times with my family and it has always been a good experience.

At first, I was thinking about booking a casino hotel but then I also was afraid that I might end up smelling like smoke when I go to the interview. I also thought about the hassle of having to catch a cab back and forth to and from my hotel so I've decided to do the same as forest and just stay at the embassy for that night. Lol Forest! You basically sold a room to me!

Great! The commission I earn will help pay for my hotel room!:D

Rxgirl, what time do you arrive?

I'm flying in Thursday night so I won't be checking in until 10. I've made my reservations for Thursday night and Friday night, only because it's more convenient that way. How about you Forest? When are you flying in?

I arrive in Las Vegas about 10:30 a.m. on Friday so I should be at the hotel around 11 - hopefully I can get an early check in or I'll be a fixture in the lobby! lol

All this talk about the interview is making me nervous and excited! :D

Hey, I have a question about the Embassy Suites checkout time. My interview is at 10am but if the checkout time is at noon, will they charge me a whole day rate again or they will charge it per hour? Cause I don't want to pay another $100+ since I'm flying out at 5pm that same day.

I received my notification of my application being complete on the morning of Nov 10th. Later that evening, I received the email inviting me for an interview! I got my first choice for Friday, Dec 11 @ 11 AM.

kashkow, the best thing to do is to call them. but from my experiences with hotels is to give the front desk your belongings so that they can keep them until you're done with interview. that way they won't charge you extra for staying past the check out time.

i'll be doing that as well, i'd love to explore the area...possibly visit the casinos? just kidding. LOL ;)

I'll be flying in thursday night and interviewing Friday morning at 9:30am. I'll be staying at the Hard Rock though. Good Luck to everybody interviewing!

I thought I would post my details. I am flying in late Friday night - arriving after 11PM. I decided to stay at the Embassy Suites too, just to cause less stress. I am then flying out around 2PM on Saturday (don't get home until after 11PM).

I am nervous for the trip because this will be my first time away from my 2 year old and 9 month old over night. I hope my husband can handle Friday evening and all day and night Saturday. It is just way to expensive to have us all go. I wish we could have made it a mini family vacation, but we need to save our monies for future things - hopefully one will be moving to Hawaii (or anywhere for pharmacy school).

Good Luck to you all.

I'm looking forward to meeting you all there, hopefully! :) 2 more weeks people. Good luck to everyone. It looks like there's about 10 interviews or less so far. I hope we all get a seat!

Sasmw, I admire how hard you're trying to pursue your career goals. Especially with 2 young babies, it's really hard work! I don't know if I could handle it myself if I had children. I know it'll be hard to be away from your family for one night but just think of it as you're investing into your future for your babies. I wish you luck on the interview. You deserve it! We all do! :)

As my interview is at 11 a.m. and I'd really like to change after, I'm going to request a late checkout. When we were on vacation this summer in CA, my parents did that and they gave us an extra hour. It depends on how busy the hotel is - they are usually more accomodating if they have a lot of empty rooms ready for new guests. I'm also going to request an early check-in since I arrive at 10:30 a.m. It never hurts to ask!:D

Kern's suggestion is also good. You can check your luggage at the front desk until you leave and then retrieve it when you're ready to go (be prepared to tip!)

Thank you! I tried to get into pharmacy school while pursuing my BS, but I only applied to the school in my state... and I obviously did not get in. My kids have really made me want to pursue my dream - I want to show them they can do whatever they put their mind to. SO that is why I have applied to so many schools because I really want to get in and reach my goal!

Of course that's only people who have posted here on this forum. The number of interviews given out is closer to 250.

Is that an overall number of people being interviewed for the fall 2010 cycle? Ouch! That means only like 1/3 of the people will get a seat. :/ now I'm really nervous!

Actually I just checked pharmcas and they list that number at 285 :\, unfortunately doesn't help your cause. But interviews with this school are better then most, they are after the right information. Unlike other schools that may grill you about your academic past, qualifications for admission, etc here they try to evaluate if you are a good fit for the school/profession. Demonstrate that aspect and you will be in great shape.
