University of Houston C/O 2019 Applicants

So I think we should all try to be extra situationally aware for the rest of today and tomorrow. I'm not allowing myself to glance at emails during class, while driving, or while exercising. I will be making sure that I am not operating heavy machinery either. I plan on being surrounded by lots of soft things and safe environments. Emails can be hazardous! 😉 Good luck everyone!

Pft I wish! I have my email notifications on super loud even though I'm in class. And I'm reloading my inbox every 5 minutes. Longest day ever.

Just received my acceptance letter.!! So happy, all the hard work I did paid off. Really want to thank those of you who contributed in letting us know how you studied for the PCAT, and how to perfect your interview. I really couldn't have done this without the help of this site!

wow so why are u coming down to houston ? hows the environment in amarillo? is it a social place ? was thinking of texas tech but am not sure bout the environment

My husband was transferred to Houston and we're moving in January. I was banking a little too much on getting in to Houston.

We've lived in Amarillo for 5 years now and we really like it, but we always knew we wouldn't stay.

There isn't much of a nightlife or a downtown. There are some good restaurants though.

In my opinion, apartment living here is expensive. You'll pay $650-$1000 for a decent one bedroom. There are a lot of options though.

There is a lot of money in this town, so people are always out doing stuff. The restaurants are always busy.

It's almost always sunny.... and windy. Like really extremely, unpleasantly windy. It's not unusual to have 12-20 mph wind with gusts up to 40 mph. There aren't any trees here unless they were planted. I think that's weird. If you're outdoorsy, we have a big canyon to hike and bike in.

The people here are very friendly.

This might seem a bit early, but does anyone know what housing areas are good for U&H? And if any1 is interested in a roommate haha 😀

If you want on campus housing, calhoun lofts are very nice but they are pretty pricey. Outside of UH, most people live in the med center: they have some nice apartments but again, pricey if you live alone. With a roommate it becomes a lot more affordable. I live pretty far from UH (like 30 miles) and it's still pretty expensive so better to get something closer to campus. At least you won't spend an hour commuting haha.

Yea I don't think on-campus housing is an option (pricy), and I definitely will be finding a roommate somewhere close to the campus. Don't want to live more than 15 min from campus by drive, Houston traffic is notoriously bad.

I received mine about three weeks before my interview. They will give you 1 week to complete it.

Hey! I'm applying here as well but I'm still waiting on my application to be verified. About how long after yours was verified did they send you an invitation?

I have not heard anything from UNT. They said it may take 3 weeks after the interview to know if i am accepted or not.
I will go to the interview at UAMS arkansas next Friday.
I have not heard anything from Tech or A&M yet.

I applied on august 30 but my Pharmcas application was not verified until sept 17th. So, UH defered me to regular decision at the middle of October. I received my interview invitation yesterday. I hope u will get one soon.

Oh ok, gotcha. Thanks and good luck on your interview!

Thank you.
Did Pharmcas tell you when your application will be verified? did they receive your transcripts?
They said it will take about four weeks but I posted a forum on here and it seems like it's been faster than that. I e-submitted my application on 10/13 but I didn't have my last transcript in until 10/21.

They verified mine very fast. I dont think it will take that long. The school are able to view your file as soon as you choose the designation. They just wait until pharmcas verrify your application and they will continue the admission process.

Okay great and yeah, you're right! Although I think some schools wait even longer. I hear UT Austin doesn't send out invitations until December but I'm not sure how accurate that is.

I got accepted at UHCOP but I have not heard much about the curriculum and program. During our interview there was no informational meeting or presentation about the school. For those of you who have accepted to go the program why did you choose UHCOP? I know that the classes are lecture based but that is about it. Are their simulations and application practices that comes along with the curriculum. What makes UHCOP a good school and stands apart from other programs?

Anyone hear back from u&h regarding the acceptance packet? Mailed mine on Monday haven't received any notice yet.

I actually went in person and turned mine in and Dr. Pitman sent me a confirmation email that she got everything as well as my background check. You could always email her to verify she received it.

After tons of research, I actually know quite a lot about the program (and I have some acquaintances that are P2s.) I'm not sure exactly what you want to know. The actual curriculum for what classes you will take and when is posted on the webstite pharmacy.uh.edu under current students. Yes there are tons of application practices that go along with the curriculum. We will have skills labs that take place I believe on Friday mornings where they divide us up in 4 groups, and we practice things like blood pressure as well as testing cholesterol and glucose. You need a certain number of hours your first year for these kinds of things so lots of P1s attend local health fairs and do basic screenings on weekends. Second semester we will have compounding. We go down to PCCA a couple of times and actually compound all sorts of things like capsules, suppositories, gels, creams, etc. After the first year, over the summer you can choose to do the immunization certification program where they teach you how to administer vaccines. After that, your second year you can attend the health fairs and flu clinics and actually administer the vaccines yourself. We will continue to have skills labs all throughout the first three years. In the third year, we have an IV lab where they teach us how to compound IV using aseptic technique following the USP 797 standards. Also, third year we take physical assessment where you learn how to do a physical exam and what those findings may mean to a pharmacist and drug therapy.

All throughout the first three years there are tons of actual hands-on activities and labs that we will do. Those are the ones that come to mind now, but I know there are lots more. These are on top of IPPE and APPE rotations where we will actually go a pharmacy and work as an intern, basically doing everything except the final verification. These start the summer after our P2 year.

I hope that answered your question!
