University of Illinois c/o 2019 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha I read it the same way! Hopefully the portal will be back up and updated sometime during business hours today.

I got into the portal, but no changes yet

I just called and was told they were hoping to get the committee together this week to hopefully (keyword here being hopefully) start sending out letters next week.

Oh geez they haven't even passed that step yet!? That's kind of rough to give 300ish people less than a month's notice to book all of the closest hotels and the cheapest flights...

[SDN why are you being weird? Anyway...]

This is kind of what I feared when I saw that last year people didn't get any notice until exactly 1 month before the actual interview. I agree that it really does make for expensive flights! ):

Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone can give me an accurate answer (or direct me to a recent website) about OOS students switching residency for tuition purposes? I've looked on SDN and other sites but get a lot of conflicting information. Just wanted to post here before I harass the college calling them *again* asking more questions

I'm an OOS applicant and as far as my research on the school goes, they do not allow you to switch residency after your first year. You have to do it the hard way (living there for a full year/switching over all of your info/whatever) prior to the time you submit your application.

Where have you found that they allow you to switch residencies prior to your second year?

I think Dr. Foreman mentioned it briefly during the info session during the interviews last year. I think it may be possible but hard? Maybe you have to make so much money a year to qualify? I am not sure since I am instate and didn't pay much attention to it.

I would expect to hear around or after the 10th about interviews - my portal updated on the 10th last year and my letter was dated the 9th.

I wouldn't worry about hotels filling up, honestly, because I waited until a couple days before the interview to make a reservation and I was still able to get a discounted room at a hotel in town. The school makes a deal with certain hotels for a discount.

I did have a hard time finding parking around the school that day so I would come early enough before your interview to leave time to walk a little bit. I didn't have to walk super far, but I had not brought my coat thinking I would be able to park in the lot directly in front of the school. That lot was full so I had to park down the street. It was so cold - I think it was below 15 degrees that day and I about died walking to the school from where I parked in just my suit. Also, the tours go outside so bring a coat!

I haven't found anything that reliably says you can switch residencies (besides marriage) at anytime during the four years, let alone before the second one.

I just wanted to know in general, if it can be done. And if it can be done, is it actually feasible?

The University of Missouri had a sheet in their interview weekend packet that listed all the US vet schools and noted which 5 allow students to successfully gain IS residency after one year. Those 5 were: Missouri, OSU, UC Davis, Washington State & NC State. I say successfully because during a Q&A session there, the admissions staff told us there were 8 additional vet schools that permit students to apply for residency, but very few of those students (if any) are approved for IS status. I'm not sure if Illinois is on that list of 8 schools, but I would reach out directly to their residency office for more specific information.

Ok, so as far as the committee, we'll see what happens because we just got like 6 inches of snow last night. Hopefully, all the roads will be shoveled by noon today. As far as residency, it's extremely difficult to get it switched over. I'm OOS and attempting that right now but it looks unlikely. You have to make a gross salary of 14k a year AND show evidence that you're not just in Illinois for school. My fiance and I are attempting to buy a house, I have my license changed to an Illinois one, I'm registered to vote here, and I'm working. However, we won't be getting married until after I graduate and I don't make enough on my own to reach the 14k requirement so it's unlikely they'll let me switch.

Man, that's rough. Not trying to pry here, but have you guys thought about getting married before school's out? The ultimate savings would be astronomical. The only reason I applied OOS at all was because the fiance and I plan on getting married during the first year and applying for my residency the 2nd.

I mean, if y'all are working on buying a house and planning on being together forever, it just might be worth bumping the date up a bit. ^__^ Good luck in anything you choose though!

We wanted to but he's leaving for the army in 2 weeks and still technically married to his ex in Canada because she's taking forever to get the paperwork done (they were legally married in Canada). It's been like a 2 year process now and apparently the army frowns on divorce so he has to wait until he's promoted a couple ranks before trying again to get it done.

In case anyone else was wondering:

I called the Admissions Office today and the woman told me it's a difficult process to switch residencies and very few people can do it. She directed me to this website with the criteria (it applies to the whole UI system, including CVM): http://www.usp.uillinois.edu/residency/res_faq.cfm

If anyone else is like me and picking a school will come down to cost, and if you've already been accepted somewhere you would go to over Illinois, consider contacting the admissions committee and withdrawing your application so the interview invite you could possibly get, can now go to someone else. Good luck to everyone!

TLDR: it's pretty hard to get in-state tuition

Are you guys sending your Fall Transcript after you get an interview? Since the deadline for transcript is February 1...

That's too bad. My fiancee was in the service too so I definitely understand the crazy difficult hoops you have to jump through sometimes. I wish you the best!

I'm trying to hold out because I don't want to pay the 16 bucks if I'm not getting an interview, but I will send it on Friday even if I haven't got an interview yet (...I might push it to Monday 🙄 )

Illinois doesn't really allow you to switch your residency.

Where are you getting this deadline from?

I'm assuming that people are getting the deadline from their website. I haven't gotten an e-mail about it, but I know that's the listed date on their website.

I hope we do...especially because I am waiting on sending my transcripts out too!

I called this afternoon to check on my fall transcripts and was told by Theresa that the admissions committee has finishing reviewing applicants and they now know who will be getting an interview and who won't! We should "be hearing shortly"!!!!!!

Nothing like making us wait I suppose...

I hope we get an email invitation before a paper invitation 😛 it is SO cold here (Chicago suburbs) and I do NOT want to trek the 14 feet to my mailbox haha

Anyways, lets hope we hear Friday!

Last year I never got an email invitation - just the paper one and the portal online was updated.

Brb I'm gonna go stalk my email inbox....

I just got an email saying I got an interview!! I'm glad they decided against snail mail invites.

Just got an email interview invite (OOS) and last name is a J!
