University of Iowa c/o 2014!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just a small update for those still waiting to hear. I e-mailed Iowa to see if they were still on track and this is the reply I got. Also, there's only 26 people registered for classes so far.

The reason there's only 26 people registered for classes is because the University of Iowa hasn't told accepted students that they should register for classes yet. The intrepid 26 that have already registered did so on their own accord because they are already familiar with the ISIS system and didn't feel like waiting for the college of pharmacy to tell them it's ok to register. So presumably there are plenty of accepted applicants out there who either don't know how to use ISIS or have decided to wait for the college of pharmacy to give them the go ahead before registering.

I have alot of classmates who park in the ramp daily or use the meters outside of the residence halls and feed them quarters. The meters are cheaper when you only have an hour on campus.

They pay to park in the ramp daily? That's a lot of wasted money, at least in my opinion. I guess if you're in a crunch for time, though, something's gotta give. For P1s, that would be very costly because they have class for 4 hours or more several days per week. I agree about the meters for a 1 hour class, though. It's convenient and less than a dollar.

You're right. I didn't mean to imply anything other than 26 of 108 have registered. It is still pretty early for registration of even undergrad. I just wanted to provide the information.

How is the area around 1958 Broadway St ?
Unless that specific house/apartment is amazing with cheap rent I'd keep looking. That area has been having sort of a bad run in the last 6-12 months (maybe longer, just recent stuff is more news worthy?). A few pizza delivery people got robbed and so a few companies stopped delivering to that side of town. The neighborhood is trying to improve it and the city has created a curfew for minors to try and prevent some of the younger violence. It is kind of far away from the Pharmacy building too. Personally, I would avoid that area.

Are there any pharm students looking for a roommate or know anyone looking for a roommate?

Also do any of your current UIowa students have any advice on finding decent apartments and such :/ i am currently in california so i have absolutely no idea where to start.

Thanks in advance.

I would start on craigslist: http://iowacity.craigslist.org/apa
You could also try the DailyIowan website: http://www.dailyiowan.com/pages/classifieds.html

I've only rented a couple places here. I only had trouble with one landlord. His name is Bob Crane, from Crane and Associates. Others have been uneventful, so good. Sorry, I don't know about anyone looking for a roommate. It shouldn't be hard to find one though, even on here, maybe a med student or something?

im still looking for an apt/roomate too desklamp. i wood prefer to live with a professional student as well. PM me if your interested

I may also be looking for a roommate or two. I currently live in Iowa City so I could help with the apartment finding process if necessary. Let me know via private message.

Thanks for the information! Things will work out with you. Good luck!

A lot of COP students live on the west side of campus in the Seville apartments. These are about a 10-15 minute walk to the COP and relatively cheap.

Here are a few other links of rental companies that have apartments on the west side.

http://mmyersproperty.com/
http://www.hpmic.com/
http://www.rivercityprop.com/

There is also The Lodge that some students live at... huge complex with furnished apartments.

There are also many condo options if you're looking to buy a place for the next four years. If you don't mind living farther away, many of my classmates also live in North Liberty (about a 10-15 min drive).

As for parking, the buses (free Cambus if you're downtown, cheap city bus if you're not) is probably the best bet. Parking in the library lot (~7 min walk from the college) is also an ok deal compared to the Fieldhouse ramp. Costs $0.60/hr.

PM me if you have any other questions about IC or the COP!

You could always email Pat ([email protected]) at the COP to send out an email to current/future students that are looking for a roommate.

Pat is awesome. She won't mind.

hey everyone!

i'm gonna live in a townhouse off mormon trek rd, about 2.5 miles from campus. i'm looking for a female roommate, if anyone is interested!! 🙂 its a 3 bed, 3.5 bath, 2120 sqft place with a 2 car attached garage (and a driveway if we end up needing to park more than 2 cars!). we have a bus stop literally across the street from our place, which was a huge reason why i picked it! each room has its own private full bath. i'll furnish the house in general, so you'd just have to worry about your room/bathroom 🙂

if any girls are interested, message me!

(ps- you'll find this info on the iowa c/o2014 facebook pg too!)

Does anyone know how many pharmacy students use the school's health insurance? In general, is it better to get SHIP or UIGradcare Plan for health insurance? (I am out of state and looking at the info online but I would like to get a feel if one is better than the other from people who actually have the insurance)

And now for something completely different

mail

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
I saw this in the store in the cedar rapids airport and finally emailed the picture to myself from my phone.
The poor girl working there was giving me a weird look when I was taking pictures of this wile I was paying for my cookie. I probably came off as such an ass  (Actually, I know I did.) But here in Buffalo, stuffed corn is rather funny. I love how all the corn is smiling

SHIP should be sufficient. I don't know of anyone in my class with gradcare. Many have SHIP though. If you are a reasonably healthy individual who doesn't seek out a doctor for more than your annual physical or flu, then gradcare is a waste of money in my opinion. It might be worth the extra money for people with chronic conditions who need the extra services. For the average person though, you don't need it. I maintain the mindset that insurance is for emergencies, and SHIP covers that aspect just fine. Even if you have to pay for a shot or 2, it's cheaper than paying the extra $100+/mo for gradcare.

Students have to pay a health fee every semester anyway, so you're able to go to the student health center to see a doctor as many times as you want/need to throughout the year with no copay. All the bells and whistles of gradcare are just extra money out of your pocket.

does anyone know when they start looking at the waitlist? i am currently waitlisted at iowa and was wondering and hoping i don't have to wait allllll summer to find out 🙂 thanks!!

They were already pulling people off it at this time last year. They seem to be lagging a bit this year with admissions.

ya it does seem that all the schools are lagging...i got an email May 1st offering me a spot on the list and was also told that a letter would be arriving. so far no letter but i did respond to the dean's email telling him i would like to be on the list and he replied back. i have a friend who found out she got into midwestern a week before classes started last year...since i am out of state i would like to have a little more advance 🙂

Thanks for responding!!

Offhand, do you know if Baker Apartments allow pets? Apartment hunting is a little complicated by the fact that I have 2 small dogs (yorkshire terriers). I would also like a single/efficiency.

I found these from the university's off-housing website. How are the locations?

2401 Hwy 6 E - these ones are really cheap (one is 459 with water/heat included and the other is 579 with water/heat/electric according to the site)
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1958+...code_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CAcQ8gEwAA

615 South Governor Street
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=1958+...code_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CAcQ8gEwAA

About parking - I remember students saying they park at the Hawkeye lot and then take a bus to the pharmacy building. How long exactly would that take?

Avoid the first one. 2nd one is slightly better, but still not great. My personal preference and advice is to stay west of the river. The area off mormon trek blvd is nice and University Heights is decent, but it's a bit run down from all the students so don't expect anything immaculate there.

A random question about the academic breaks for pharmacy school. Are they the same as the rest of the school? I was looking at the academic calender and it has a whole month for a winter session, but pharmacy school only has a fall/spring session. Does that mean we get a whole month off for winter break?

I know at hopkins, the undergrads had something called "intersession", which was the optional winter session, but not sure if iowa's is optional, or if it even applies to grad school.

I've been looking all over and can't find an academic calendar specific to the pharmacy school. Thanks 🙂

My twin sis is currently a pharm student and she came back for a month last year- so yes, a long ass winter break! I dont know if there is an optional winter session

Does Iowa require us to purchase drug cards? I was thinking of picking up some (since I haven't worked in a pharmacy and am not familiar with the names). I know some schools require sigler's drug cards and some sell them through a school organization.

And on another note, what's the dress code for the white coat ceremony?

No, Iowa does not require drug cards, though one of the organizations does sell them as a fundraiser. I personally did not buy them, but have heard they are helpful.

Dress code for the ceremony is business casual... probably less dressy than interviews. Guys- shirt and tie, girls- a casual dress or slacks and a nice shirt.

Sorry I don't know how long the bus takes... I doubt more than 10 minutes from the Hawk lot. I do think it's hard to get a pass to the Hawk lot if you live in Iowa City or Coralville. To my knowledge, passes are given first to those commuting from out of town. If you're going to take the bus anyway, it'd probably be better to just take the city bus (or cambus if you're close to campus) than to park somewhere and then take the bus. Also, people post listings for parking spots on craigslist (often near the stadium, which is convenient for us!) This can get pricey, but if you have the money to spend on a spot, it might be worth it!

As for the two apartments you listed, the first one is probably not in the best area, but still, this is Iowa City. I'm sure you would be fine... just might be kind of run down and may not have the best neighbors. It's kind of hard to find places that rent that are pet friendly. I have a dog also, but ended up buying a condo (much easier to find a place that's pet-friendly when you're buying!) I know a few other classmates who have gone this route as well. I know there are some places that rent and allow pets, unfortunately I am not sure of where exactly these are.

I have no clue when it comes to condos. Do you know the general price range or any good website listings?

Try realtor.com or trulia.com. Look in Iowa City and Coralville for your search, and even North Liberty if you want to venture out a little bit. You're guaranteed to find several under $100k. I've seen them as low as $70k up to around $100k. Some are slightly more, depending on location.

I don't suppose there's any way to get in-state tuition by buying property in iowa huh 🙁 have any of you current iowa students heard of classmates doing assistantships? the out-of-state tuition is kind of hefty.

I remember one out of state student during the interview said she pays in-state tuition because she is a research assistant. Is it easy to do this? How common is this?

from what i know of phd assistantships, they're usually offered on a competitive basis and you have to apply, or be in good with a professor (i think?). but yeah still wanting to know if pharmDs have this opportunity :|. it seems like most labs would opt to have a phD student than a pharmD.

On ISIS, it says "Your completed file was reviewed on May 19, 2010 . You can now access your Award Summary." When I click on the award summary link, it send me to "Loan Document Status" that shows that they received certain forms (like Entrance Counseling for Federal Direct Stafford Loan and other forms) but doesn't actually tell me my actual financial aid award. Is it coming in the mail or something?

Also - anyone know anything about these apartments? I know someone said to look on west of the river but so far all I can find are east of the river.

Dolphin Lake Point Enclave

This place seems really nice from the website

Sycamore Apartments

Couldn't really find a definite address
The site said "South of Sycamore Mall, across from the Soccer Fields, on Kountry Lane, Iowa City, Iowa"
Maybe somewhere close to here?

Penningroth Apartments - Colonial Manor
2272 Wayne Avenue

Thank you so for the help!

Click on Award Notification under Student Records --> Financial Aid subheading. That should break it down with all the amounts you qualified for and what category they are in.

Anyone know anything about the Blackstone Building - 118 S. Dubuque?

The Moen group has a lot of really nice apartments on their website (Vogel House and Plaza Towers look amazing) but they are out of my price range. THe Blackstone building is the cheapest.

On the schedule for fall 2010 on the COP website, there are two blocks on mondays labeled "Communities" and "Meetings and Speakers."
What are those exactly?

I don't know anything about the blackstone building itself, but it's location in the ped mall could be an interesting experience. It can get rowdy there with the bars and all, especially on halloween. You could probably catch a free show just sitting in your window for a while.

The meetings/speakers block is normally when student org meetings are held, along with various guest speakers. You can pretty much count on free lunch if you attend (usually pizza) and you get ippe credit. It's a win-win.

That kind of surprises me - the Moen group seems very affluent and I think i read somewhere that they try to provide a more quiet living experience as opposed to rambunctious partying

Is the "Communities" also part of the Meetings/Speakers block or is it something different? Also, do all clubs meet at that time? It's only an hour and it seems like that wouldn't be enough time to get everything in (especially if you are a member of multiple clubs)

I'm sure it's probably fine during the week, but I wouldn't count on weekends being quiet.

The communities block is lumped together with the meetings/speakers. They pretty much just use that whole 2 hour block from 11:30 to 1:30 for any meetings or speakers. It depends on the week. Some weeks might have 2 meetings back to back and take up the whole 2 hours, and other weeks you'll just have 1 at 11:30 or 12:30. Some might even last 2 hours for 1 meeting, like the healthcare reform seminar we had this past year. The first few weeks are pretty packed with info meetings for all the different orgs and whatnot. After that, there's somewhat of a normal schedule.

Know anything about Dolphin Lake or Sycamore Apartments?
I read an article from like 2005 that said dolphin lake was where all the drug dealers lived but the new management was trying to fix up the place. Any truth to this? Is it really a bad/dangerous place?

I'm not familiar with either of those, but I don't go to that area of town very often. I've driven through a couple times. They seem to have decent online reviews from tenants though. Sycamore doesn't seem to be near any main roads so it might be quieter, although that may also mean buses are probably few and far between.

The Blackstone building seemed like the nicest but unfortunately it is full.

Because I started looking for apartment6s so late, I might have to settle for a less than ideal apartment for a year and try again next year 🙁

On another note, what pharmacy elective classes can you take? I didn't find a clear list on the website. They listed a few for the fall but there wasn't a lot and they didn't interest me.

It depends on the semester. Some are only offered in the fall and some in the spring. If you look at past semesters and years in ISIS, you can see the different courses.

Also, there are several offered through other colleges like the college of nursing, public health, etc. You can pretty much take anything. If you can argue its relevance to pharmacy, you can take it. People take nutrition courses, psychology courses, substance abuse, special projects with professors, drug info, research, various seminars, courses on culture and underserved populations, etc. There are some opportunities to go abroad to places like India, Mexico, and Central America as well, which also count toward elective credit.

Would you recommend taking the electives early on (in the first year), when the course load isn't as heavy? Or do most people just take them their 2nd and 3rd years.
