are there any fb groups or anything for iowa pharm students? :x
Just a small update for those still waiting to hear. I e-mailed Iowa to see if they were still on track and this is the reply I got. Also, there's only 26 people registered for classes so far.
I have alot of classmates who park in the ramp daily or use the meters outside of the residence halls and feed them quarters. The meters are cheaper when you only have an hour on campus.
You're right. I didn't mean to imply anything other than 26 of 108 have registered. It is still pretty early for registration of even undergrad. I just wanted to provide the information. The reason there's only 26 people registered for classes is because the University of Iowa hasn't told accepted students that they should register for classes yet. The intrepid 26 that have already registered did so on their own accord because they are already familiar with the ISIS system and didn't feel like waiting for the college of pharmacy to tell them it's ok to register. So presumably there are plenty of accepted applicants out there who either don't know how to use ISIS or have decided to wait for the college of pharmacy to give them the go ahead before registering.
Unless that specific house/apartment is amazing with cheap rent I'd keep looking. That area has been having sort of a bad run in the last 6-12 months (maybe longer, just recent stuff is more news worthy?). A few pizza delivery people got robbed and so a few companies stopped delivering to that side of town. The neighborhood is trying to improve it and the city has created a curfew for minors to try and prevent some of the younger violence. It is kind of far away from the Pharmacy building too. Personally, I would avoid that area. How is the area around 1958 Broadway St ?
Are there any pharm students looking for a roommate or know anyone looking for a roommate?
Also do any of your current UIowa students have any advice on finding decent apartments and such :/ i am currently in california so i have absolutely no idea where to start.
Thanks in advance.
Undesirable. The only gang in town is named the Broadway Goons. Go north and west. How is the area around 1958 Broadway St ?

You could always email Pat ([email protected]) at the COP to send out an email to current/future students that are looking for a roommate.
thanks for the info 🙂 so she's definitely ok with doing that? i've been bugging her lately about pre-reqs so i want to make sure she doesn't get annoyed with me lol.
Does anyone know how many pharmacy students use the school's health insurance? In general, is it better to get SHIP or UIGradcare Plan for health insurance? (I am out of state and looking at the info online but I would like to get a feel if one is better than the other from people who actually have the insurance)
does anyone know when they start looking at the waitlist? i am currently waitlisted at iowa and was wondering and hoping i don't have to wait allllll summer to find out 🙂 thanks!!
They were already pulling people off it at this time last year. They seem to be lagging a bit this year with admissions.
Offhand, do you know if Baker Apartments allow pets? Apartment hunting is a little complicated by the fact that I have 2 small dogs (yorkshire terriers). I would also like a single/efficiency.A lot of COP students live on the west side of campus in the Seville apartments. These are about a 10-15 minute walk to the COP and relatively cheap.

Here are a few other links of rental companies that have apartments on the west side.

There is also The Lodge that some students live at... huge complex with furnished apartments.

I found these from the university's off-housing website. How are the locations?
2401 Hwy 6 E - these ones are really cheap (one is 459 with water/heat included and the other is 579 with water/heat/electric according to the site)

About parking - I remember students saying they park at the Hawkeye lot and then take a bus to the pharmacy building. How long exactly would that take?
Does Iowa require us to purchase drug cards? I was thinking of picking up some (since I haven't worked in a pharmacy and am not familiar with the names). I know some schools require sigler's drug cards and some sell them through a school organization.
And on another note, what's the dress code for the white coat ceremony?

I have no clue when it comes to condos. Do you know the general price range or any good website listings? As for the two apartments you listed, the first one is probably not in the best area, but still, this is Iowa City. I'm sure you would be fine... just might be kind of run down and may not have the best neighbors. It's kind of hard to find places that rent that are pet friendly. I have a dog also, but ended up buying a condo (much easier to find a place that's pet-friendly when you're buying!) I know a few other classmates who have gone this route as well. I know there are some places that rent and allow pets, unfortunately I am not sure of where exactly these are.

Try realtor.com or trulia.com. Look in Iowa City and Coralville for your search, and even North Liberty if you want to venture out a little bit. You're guaranteed to find several under $100k. I've seen them as low as $70k up to around $100k. Some are slightly more, depending on location.
I remember one out of state student during the interview said she pays in-state tuition because she is a research assistant. Is it easy to do this? How common is this?I don't suppose there's any way to get in-state tuition by buying property in iowa huh 🙁 have any of you current iowa students heard of classmates doing assistantships? the out-of-state tuition is kind of hefty.

On ISIS, it says "Your completed file was reviewed on May 19, 2010 . You can now access your Award Summary." When I click on the award summary link, it send me to "Loan Document Status" that shows that they received certain forms (like Entrance Counseling for Federal Direct Stafford Loan and other forms) but doesn't actually tell me my actual financial aid award. Is it coming in the mail or something?
Thank you!@! I feel really dumb nowClick on Award Notification under Student Records --> Financial Aid subheading. That should break it down with all the amounts you qualified for and what category they are in.
I don't know anything about the blackstone building itself, but it's location in the ped mall could be an interesting experience. It can get rowdy there with the bars and all, especially on halloween. You could probably catch a free show just sitting in your window for a while.
The meetings/speakers block is normally when student org meetings are held, along with various guest speakers. You can pretty much count on free lunch if you attend (usually pizza) and you get ippe credit. It's a win-win.
Know anything about Dolphin Lake or Sycamore Apartments?I'm sure it's probably fine during the week, but I wouldn't count on weekends being quiet.
On another note, what pharmacy elective classes can you take? I didn't find a clear list on the website. They listed a few for the fall but there wasn't a lot and they didn't interest me.
It depends on the semester. Some are only offered in the fall and some in the spring. If you look at past semesters and years in ISIS, you can see the different courses.
Also, there are several offered through other colleges like the college of nursing, public health, etc. You can pretty much take anything. If you can argue its relevance to pharmacy, you can take it. People take nutrition courses, psychology courses, substance abuse, special projects with professors, drug info, research, various seminars, courses on culture and underserved populations, etc. There are some opportunities to go abroad to places like India, Mexico, and Central America as well, which also count toward elective credit.
