Caught red handed! But seriously, if UMich has your heart you can't do too much about it.
I guess it has slipped my mind, but what's that profession where people sell themselves for money again? 😉 jk

In all seriousness, I like UMD. I just don't like B'more (I'm from Maryland and have been here all my life for school, work, etc....another fear of mine is becoming a lifer). Thanks for the advice, guys. You rock. 👍

Slave,

Do yourself a favor. Go to Michigan. You've already convinced yourself that that's where you'll be happiest. I think it's great that you feel that way. Now it sounds like you're trying to get us to convince you that you should go to Maryland. I don't think any of us are going to do that. I believe Maryland's merits speak for themselves, as do Michigan's. If you are completely, totally, 100% in love with a particular school, don't worry about the loans. Michigan is a great school and you will love it there.

Now give me your scholarship. :meanie:

Labslave, I completely understand where you are coming from as far as living someplace your entire life and wanting to get out. I'm a MO resident and am looking to do the same thing, and I was actually worried (!) that my state school might supply me with a decent enough scholarship that it would make my decision difficult, because I have really had my heart set on Maryland for some time now. Luckily for me, I guess, my state school is only giving me a small scholarship that is easy to dismiss in favor of the extra happiness I will have at Maryland with all of these cool people and a major city. I don't envy your decision, and while money is important I don't think you should let it dictate where you go. If you really loved Michigan and think you'll do better there, then go. It would be nice to not have any debt, but so many doctors take out a lot of loans and yet still manage to have a good lifestyle...plus there is a good chance that you won't be stuck paying off loans for 20 years depending on which specialty you go into and how you manage your money.

I had no intentions of trying to get someone to convince me to come to Maryland. I didn't even try to start up a conversation about which schools I was considering. I really just wanted to know whether or not grading at Maryland was on a curve or not...sorry for offending. 😳

Wow, so much going on. Sorry I have been absent all day. Have been trying to salvage my group paper for my biochem class. One of my classmates sent her whole section without any references. In addition, she's ESL, so her writing was pretty much incoherent.

Anywho - yes, what time at Nacho Mama's? Hubby and I have a dinner at 6, but I think we can escape by 7:30 at the latest, putting us into B'more at around 8 I think. SQ we can probably pick you up if you don't find your way there by then. Where are you staying again?

Yeah...I'm not letting everyone in on the intricacies of my predicament because I don't want to turn this into a "Maryland vs. Michigan" thread (hell, I already seem to be annoying some), but it's a lot more complicated than just money (although the money is probably the most important factor).

I definitely appreciate the advice. 👍 From a current Terp to a future Terp: good luck!

i went to mich. undergrad, maryland is my #1 for med school. I am going to maryland, i've read all about the school and i am psyched and love the idea of being in a "city" and the curriculum and all that jazz, but make no mistake, if umich called me today and said, we screwed up and didn't mean to reject you, instead you are in, i would be packing my bags before I hung up the phone. Maryland is great and there is something to be said for not having debt, but get real, it's just money, you can pay it off, you cant pay off missed opportunities. I have seen and heard great things about michigan med., I have a lot of friends there, and have interacted a decent amount with some of the profs. you would be a fool to pass it up...just my opinion...

What day was the Nacho Mama's thing supposed to go down again? I don't know if I'll make it, but I'm willing to give it a go. The place gets pretty crowded on the weekends, so go early for a table.

If I can come, I'll probably bring a friend along if that's cool with everyone.

Slave,

I'm not annoyed or offended. I know how you feel. I would love to spend the next 4 years of my life in LA, but I honestly loved Maryland more than USC. Enough to live in Baltimore for the next 4 years. Sometimes there are complications (e.g. nobody really likes Baltimore, the cash factor, etc). But you've been talking about this decision for a while now. All I'm saying is, do yourself a favor and go with your gut. Especially since you feel this strongly. As I said before, I love Michigan and I think you will enjoy your experience there. Nothing beats Saturday at the Big House, IMNSHO. It's something everyone should experience at least once in their lives.

Now....
back to MARYLAND PRIDE!! 👍

How about 7pm on Saturday? Should we meet earlier? Later? SQ, if you need a ride, let me know and I'll send you my #.

What is up my people?!?! This is my very first post on SDN...I'll be joining you this year as a Terp!!!

Anyone else doing PSP? What's the werd??

Hey, Dr. Mario! Great to meet you. You should come out on Saturday and meet up with us!!

I'm doing the PSP, along with 2 or 3 other folks right here on SDN. If you are interested, GET YOUR INFO IN RIGHT AWAY! I think they have very limited spots. SpeedRacer, could you give Dr. Mario the name of the PSP coordinator? I don't have her email address anymore.

Also, PM me with your info:

Real Name:
Location:
Undergrad School/GradYear/Major:
Same for grad school, if applicable:
Email:
Instant Messenger:
Favorite Drink:
Other relevant info:

I'm compiling a list of new students and emailing it out. Also, anyone else - I'm still waiting on info from at least 2 others! This way we'll all be in the loop.

Oh I'm already accepted to PSP. Thanks for the welcome! I'll PM that stuff to you.

Dr Mario! Worst. Game. Ever. 😉

Welcome aboard, dawg. Always good to see more people up in here.

LW: I lolled at you starting that post as Slave, it was very funny and demeaning. Love it.

Um, BEST game ever? Actually, Dr. Mario was my initial inspiration to apply to medical school. Just kidding...

Was that the tetris knock-off, where you had to match up the little colored pills?

That game was infuriating. 😡

7pm works fine for me. We're staying at a hotel a few blocks east of the med school...is this place within walking distance of that area? If not, I might take you up on that offer for a ride if you don't mind. 😳

Hmm...I always liked Tetris better, but Dr. Mario was still cool. Welcome to the Maryland club! Are you going to hang out with us this weekend?

30 more posts to 900, folks!! Not bad for one day!

I think nacho mamas is pretty far from the campus...its in Canton, right, Coz? Meaning it's east of UMB, maybe a mile or 2? I don't mind picking you up. I'll send you an email and we'll figure it out. 🙂

Aren't you excited, SQ? Just a few more days until your big trip, right? 🙂

I wish I could go =(. Oh well. I hope ya'll have fun 🙂

LW will likely email you once she updates the list.

And I'm sad that I'm still at work...

Yeah, we're going out Saturday at Nacho Mama's. You are more than welcome to come. I'm not sure on the time...maybe 7 pm or so? (is this what was decided on?)

OK, I'm going to make an Evite. I live for making Evites. I'll post a link.

Cozmosis said:
You better evite me I swear to god!

I did! I swear!!

OK, I should probably not post it cause it has all of our emails. If you didn't get it and want to come, PM me with your email address and I'll add you to the list.

Hey Guys,

Sorry I won't be able to make it to the get together 🙁 . I am finishing out the year at my undergraduate institution in Atlanta Georgia. Man, this is a time where I wish I went to school near Baltimore so I could meet up with you guys. Maybe we can meet again before school starts. Or maybe I will meet some of you all at PSP. I am still deciding if I will do the PSP program. Who is doing the PSP program again? Well, I hope you guys have fun on Saturday and I hope to meet you all very soon.

Oh and BTW I am not LAME 🙁 :sniff.sniff: 😉

Agape:

PSP starts on May 30th. Definitely do it!!! I will be there, and so will gonadotropins, SpeedRacer, and Dr. Mario. But get your stuff in soon, because spaces are very limited.

I know you are not lame, I just needed a descriptive. That's all. 🙂

Don't worry, I'm sure there'll be lots of get-togethers in the near future! You can come to my barbeque! Of course, I might be holding it in the middle of Lombard street if I don't get this house. But hopefully it'll be on my back porch/backyard.

Thanks for the evite, but unfortunately I will be 3000 miles away from Nacho Mamas on the 29th.

Because I'll still be living in California until the end of May when i'm moving to Baltimore for the PSP.

Hey LW,

I know you don't think I am Lame. I was just messing with ya 🙂 . And we will see about PSP. Well the reason I have not committed is that I was still deciding on what school to go to and Ms. Renoylds said I could not commit to PSP until I was sure on where I was going (which is quite understandable). But it seemed like she would let me do the program if I decided later, she said just give her a buzz when I decide. Granted if there are spaces left. And do you know how strict they are on being you being there everyday? I would have to miss a couple of days for a scholarship interview?

Oh and good luck with the house. I thought they accepted your offer a while back?

Can I come to LW's BBQ and Nacho Mama's?

Hey Guys,

Quick question, The curriculum at UMD is systems-based, right?

Woot woot...I just RSVP'd to the e-vite. Nacho Mama's here I come!

Of course you can come! Send LadyWolverine your email address and she will send you the e-vite.

PSP count:
Yes: LadyWolverine, gonadotropins, SpeedRacer, Dr.Mario, plsletmein, solacecomes
Maybe: Agape

Wow. There's a max. enrollment of 18 (I think) in the PSP and 6 of them (and possibly one more) are SDN-ers. That means that at least 33% of the PSP will be SDN-ers (maybe more if Agape joins or if all the PSP slots aren't filled). Considering that we represent less than 10% of the UMD 2010 class, there seems to be some sort of statistical significance.

What could it be? SDN-ers are more likely to have summers free? SDN-ers are more willing to give up their summers?

Really?? Only 18 people??? Jeez I thought it'd be bigger than that. Huh.

Cozmosis said:
Maybe I should try to join and wreck the stats even more. Yeah right, nerrrrrddssssss!! 😉

haha. Well. That's certainly an explanation. UMD 2010 SDN-ers must be more nerdy than the general UMD 2010 population. :hardy:

And I don't recall where I remember the max of 18 from.

Geez, SC, overanalyze much? 😛

j/k, we all do stuff like that.

I'm doing the PSP because I'm tired of living in the real world. I just wanna go back to SCHOOL.

Mix, of course you can come. PM me with your email address and I'll send you the Evite.

LW or sol,

Do you guys know the cirriculum question I asked. About the systems based?
