I hate to break up the TV discussion, believe me I do recognize the inherent value of watching peple on TV do what I would like to be doing myself, but I would like to know if anyone has made a definative decision on their loans yet. That is if you are taking them out. I have not finished all the calculations but it looks like it is going to come down to UMB and AMS. AMS is offering a 3% deduction/return which essestialy results in a 6% reduction of the principal if you apply it to your loan. Though UMB's 1% + 2% interest rate reduction seems like it would save a chunk of change too. I plan on finishing the calculations later today but if anyone has already done it or has any other useful info, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hey Stagger,

When you finish the calculations can you let me know which is the best please 🙂

I checked and the original discussion on lenders here happened beginning around post 320 or so. I think Coz's boss who is some smart numbers person said that UMB was the best and we all kinda already agreed on that so that's why a lot of us probably went with them. It would be interesting to hear your reasoning when you are done with your calculations.

Woohoo 1000+!

I also went with UMD, but I'm not sure how much I'll end up taking out for the first year. It all depends on what kind of lease we sign when we visit Baltimore this weekend (woohoo!).

Did anyone else get an email yesterday about returning a students with disabilities form? They said everyone has to return it regardless of whether you need accomodations, and I swear I returned mine back with my form to hold my spot in the class. Oh well, I guess it won't hurt to send it again.

I didn't get an e-mail like that. But yeah, can't hurt to send it again.

Hey LW, how'd you like to have Greg and me for neighbors? I can't see how we can afford it, but we're sorta kinda looking at houses. One of them is in Morrell Park. 😀

Dude, that rocks! I'd love to have you guys for neighbors. Morrell Park is a cute little place. Plus we could carpool to class!

Did you guys look at that townhouse on South Calhoun? Greg seemed to like it...I certainly did! The area seemed kinda sketchy, but was definitely turning around. That was my second-favorite place. Plus it was kinda closer to school, although still a hike.

lol...I was thinking today about this townhouse that we saw on Lombard street. It had this TINY-ASS spiral staircase that maybe your cat could fit in.

I think we are going to look at that one too, but the one I really like right now (taken with a grain of salt because all I have seen is a picture of the outside) is a single family home on Wilmington Ave. It has an actual driveway (I know that sounds silly, but I hate street parking) and a front porch.

Anywho, I think we are going to look at some places Saturday before meeting up with everyone at Nacho Mama's that night. Turns out this "dinner" we have with some people is actually at noon - which makes it lunch. So we'll have plenty of time just to look around and get some ideas.

We're just in the beginning stages though.

Yeah, Coz...I still need a roommate! Hint, hint. 🙂

PS Someone needs to take these Martha Stewart Living and Illuminations catalogues away from me. Mentally, I've already spent half my med-student budget for this year, and I don't even own the house yet. 🙂

Um, ok, but you need to take my Frontgate catalogue. I haven't even decided to buy a house, let alone put in an offer on one.

Oh FYI. I was explaining to hubby last night about how we need to surpass Oklahoma in posting. Despite the fact that I used such cornerstones of logical discourse and debate such as "because we have to" and "that means we're better than they are" he dared to question the soundness of my argument. Additionally, he pointed out that even if we do pass them in posts, we are unlikely to every surpass them in views. I think he is a secret agent for Oklahoma, sent in to undermine our efforts and sap morale.

What say you future Terps? Views do not matter! But it would be nice if some of you lurkers joined us in our insanity.

What is this Frontgate you speak of? Share, you must! I want to look at more cute home furnishings that I will never be able to afford!

As for the OK thing...I think that their list was established long before ours. So, naturally, as one of the first "official thread of..." threads on the scene, they would have more views. I dunno when it was first posted, but it was a while back, I'm willing to bet...and if you notice, it says "Prospective" class...so this doesn't deter the non-officials from posting in the first place. If this were the Maryland "Prospective" thread, we'd have 4 times as many posters. Not everyone can be "Official" 🙂

I know, I know...but situational overanalysis is the hallmark of a pre-med. I'm not ready to give that up yet. 😡

Views, who cares about views?? All about the content, baby.

Your husband sounds like a real nerd! Who cares about views?!

(I have also lamented the views thing and am hoping we got a lot of curious people once this thread hits critical mass!)

I just realized something...

How will we all recognize each other on Saturday?? I mean, I'LL be easy to spot. Just look for the people screaming and running away.

Seriously though. There's nothing really distinguising about me...I guess you can look for the girl with long-ish red hair? Oh, yeah, and I have a pegleg.

Well, you'll recognize us. I'll be the short blonde with Greg. Everyone else can look for Greg too. He's the easiest to spot in a crowd, given that he is 6'5. Of course, we're notoriously late to everything, so you may look and he won't be there, but that's besides the point.

Oh, man...am I totally slow today, or what? 😴

How will I know what anyone looks like? Nacho Mamas is pretty small though, so you're either at one of like, 7 tables or at the bar.

Ooh, should I call and get a table?

LW: how come the last two people on the new UMD list don't have SDN monikers? are they not SDN users?

No. They are not, at least, not to my knowledge. They are from mdapplicants.com, yet another waste-of-time obsession.

Where is paycheck lady with my paycheck?

Heeeeeeere, paycheck ladyyyyyyy.........

Maybe if I put out a saucer of warm milk and tuna fish, she will come running?

Or I could be mean and just run the can opener... :meanie:

OMG! Speak of the devil...SHE CAME!!!

I love you, Paycheck Lady!!!!
😍 😍

This has been one of my worst weeks of work ever. One that may make me quit over 2 weeks earlier (and only then because I made a committment in late May).

Coz, I TOTALLY hear you. Work is sooo slow today. I'm debating whether or not quitting now will affect my home loan eligibility. Bah, what's 2 weeks, anyway (except another 2 grand I won't see)

I have one sycophant coworker in particular that used to be friendly with me and is now a complete and total beeyotch to me. Accusing me of things..ARGH! I really may just quit June 2.

Whatever PSP slackers. I'm working until 7/31. 🙁 My brain totally wants to quit now. 3 more months of work!

I don't have a paycheck lady. 🙁 But I guess direct deposit has its upside too.

well this thread is moving along at a snappy rate. i'm so busy yet so bored at work. thank heaven i'm out of here in almost exactly a month.

Join the club! Man, what am I gonna complain about once I'm actually finished working? I'll find something.

Quit yer whinin'. It could be worse. After work, I have to go try on bridesmaid dresses.

Yippee.

Ooh! I just got my Evite Reminder. I feel so special 🙂

Jeez, I sound like a spazz..."PS this is me"..."PS blah blah blah"...wtf is my problem? I don't think I'm that much of a spazz in real life.

Not to fit you into a stereotype, but I thought that females generally enjoy trying on clothes and whatnot. Are bridesmaid dresses that bad?

Yes. In bridesmaid dresses, you usually have very little choice in what you are wearing. In addition, there is no such thing as a dress that looks good on 6 different women. Also, you usually pay a bazillion dollars for a dress you don't like that you are only wearing once.

That does suck. I thought at least the couple would pay for the dress.

The bride's mom is partially subsidizing the dress purchase. Luckily, she doesn't get to choose it. I've known the bride since we were 5 years old, so hopefully she'll respect my input 🙂

Bridesmaid dresses are notorious for being fun colors like neon pink. 👎

I'm a redhead. Redheads don't do pink.

Okay I did a bit of calculating and it seems that UMB is the way to go. To work things out exactly was much to tedious so I came up with some rough figures. On a $100,000 loan paid back over 10yrs, you save ~$1500 with UMB. If you borrow more, obviously you will save a bit more. All in all it doesn't seem that the difference is significant but there you go. In fact, I don't even know that $1500 over 10 yrs, is worth the time I spent calculating the damn thing. Oh well. Hope this is of help to someone.

This is why you make friends with accountants! Or have bosses with accountant brothers.

I changed my evite thing from maybe to absolutely yes. Hooray for small details!
Woot woot....look forward to seeing you there.

As for recognizing me and Todd....we've sort of got that all-american look going for us (not my words, but my friends). I'm 5'4'' with light blonde hair, he's 5'11'' with dark blonde hair. I'm pretty pastey white since winter just passed, so look for the person emitting a strange glow.

All American also = from the midwest. I don't mean that in a bad way. But somehow people from the midwest are like people from NYC - you can tell where they're from.

You will know us by our height differential. LOL

I know this is way random but I don't suppose any of you play hockey/have any interest in putting together a team, it'd be cool to have a med. team vs other teams but I'm not sure we'd have enough people, i don't even know what the closest rink is...

Sorry...I've never played hockey a day in my life, and I imagine if I did I would get torn to pieces. 😛 I had friends who played in highschool, and I can remember them complaining about how expensive it is to play compared to other sports.

Yes, we midwesterners stick out sometimes. I think we're just very polite or something, whereas New Yorkers are known for being more blunt. Maybe I would look a little tougher if it wasn't for the blonde hair/blue eyes combo. I would experiment in different hair colors, but I saw how disasterous it was for my sister when she tried to go brunette. It's not a good look for us.

Oh yeah...and I made it to Baltimore last night (yay!). We're headed this morning to look at apartments, which I always enjoy. I'm probably in for a rude awakening when I see the size vs. cost ratio here in B-more compared with central-MO (where I am convinced has one of the lowest cost-of-livings in the entire US)

That's true, midwesterners are some of the most infuriatingly nice people I have ever met. I hope you didn't take offense at my statement, I really didn't mean it in a negative fashion. 🙂 I'm from Western NY, not NYC, but yes, you'll find bluntness is one of my most predominant traits. And Greg? Well, he's from Jersey. 'nuff said.
