***University of Miami Class of 2011!!!***

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Boca! Boca! Boca! Don't you want to live in the mouth of the rat? UM@FAU is a product of the University of Miami and I don't think that the University of Miami will let the boca campus produce anything except excellent physicians. They wouldn't want their name to be "sullied" or whatever. Yeah, it shouldn't take more than an hour to get to Miami.

Can girls play any of the intermural sports offered for the med students?
LOL of course girls can play intramurals. What do you think we're going to be doing?!?!? Looking at wedding magazines and knitting sweaters for future children...hehe...uh oh...I'm a bad girl.

  Knitting??!!? My 73 year old grandmother is the only person I know that can knit. Do they have like flag football or something?

After reading this, I checked to see where I was on the waitlist. I am still stuck at 69, which is where I was when I put my name on the list in November. This is for a two bedroom, so you must be waiting for a different apartment, or they just hate me.
I wouldn't be surprised if she added your name or just read the last number when you called.

Since people want to move in and out at different, staggered times, they don't really put energy into honoring their waitlist. First, get your name on all of their lists (studio, 1BR, 2BR). Then, a couple months from now, start calling them regularly to ask about any upcoming vacancies. If you bother them enough, they'll eventually give you one. That's how most of my classmates who lived in Dominion got their places.

I understand your need for skylines Zeke. I will def. miss that coming from Boston, but I'll be by the beach so I'll take it. I think it really comes down to a matter of personal educational environment preference. I don't think that there will be any difference in educational quality. I'm sure that Boca students will be just as prepared as Main campus students for rotations. I like the flexibility of the Boca program and the fact that it's a new program will work in our favor. I believe we will have more say in pedagogical issues, etc. Anyway, best of luck in your decision Zeke and I hope you end up wherever you will be happiest.
I have heard that new programs work in your favour from several doctors...

Is that where you heard it too?

Really...at McGill there was a knitting club. It was creepy!

I'm sure there are a bunch of intramural things. How's the gym at FAU? Damn that gym at main campus has really got me.

Are there studios at Dominion and what do you do about food?
1.) Yes.

2.) Winn-Dixie is about two minutes away.

As far as restaurants / fast food is concerned, there's Chicken Kitchen, a Chinese place, a Latin place, and a Subway in the Dominion garage. And there are tons of fast food-type restaurants around Jackson. Of course most of these places--with the exception of Subway, McDonalds, and Dunkin Donuts--are closed after hours.

As far as late night and weekend eats are concerned, Wendy's, Burger King, and Popeye's are about 2-4 minutes away by car. I also know that there's some Mexican place, which is supposedly good, next to Wendy's, and some Asian place, which supposedly sucks, across the street from Dominion.

LOL, well I'm trying not to blow up into an orca, so Winn Dixie sounds good to me 🙂

I've never been to the gym at FAU but my best friend has and she said it's pretty good: elliptical machines, weights, track, pool, bicycles, rowing machine...

LOL I don't watch CSI in any order. I just watch episodes back to back from whatever season 🙂

To answer some of the questions about the Boca campus:

We have the following intramural teams: men's football, women's football, co-ed soccer, men's basketball, men's volleyball, and co-ed volleyball. We might have some more, but these are the only sports that I can remember the med students' participating in. I'm sure that as we start accepting more students, interest will increase for other events. By the way, our co-ed volleyball team were the intramural champions. Our women's football team took second in the league.

The weight gym at FAU is pretty small. I've been to it only once, and that was because I was lost. The pool is Olympic-sized; several students swim there regularly. The school has indoor and outdoor basketball courts that are regularly available. We also have a track that was renovated and re-opened within the past month. I've seen an obstacle course on campus, too. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone who has ever used it.

An obstacle course?? That's the coolest thing I've ever heard. I'm definitely sold...

LOL. What about machines...does the gym has a good number of treadmills, ellipticals, stairclimbers and whatnot?

That's what I am wondering?

Deuist, what do you mean by pretty small? Like 20,000 square feet or tiny, tiny.

Thanks

It's sad, but the gym may often be our only way out from the bubble of medicine sometimes 🙂

My post above said that the gym had elliptical machines, weights, bicycles, blah blah...don't listen to me cuz I actually go to FAU 🙄

That's what I wanted to know. I am going to the Boca Campus.

It is true Dr. Zeke, it's like an escape. Yesterday I was out on my bike for 25 miles and it made me feel so good. Forgot everything about the Biochem test coming up and the stress at work. Sometimes, I hate getting going, but once it's done and over with I feel like a new person. It's the endorphins I guess.

1) Yes I agree with the endorphins bit.

2) I'm a fatty, I gained 10 lbs last summer when I finished my masters. I was bored, not working out and eating a lot.

3) Planning on joining the main campus gym and hitting it up while I'm working there 🙂. Can't be a fatty at my brother's wedding.

that and hardcore drug abuse 😉
So...do you like to drink? Because if I end up at FAU, I'm planning on having my parents stock my liquor cabinet before school starts.

10 lbs. I think that borders on obesity 🙄 don't be so hard on yourself Zeke. you'll be back in bikini shape in no time. main campus gym or not... I in fact do drink. If you end up at the main campus I will definitely help you empty your freshly stocked liquor cabinet. I'm sure many other FAUers will be so kind as to oblige as well.

Yeah, wherever I end up...I'm going to drink. 🙂 How else would one take the edge off after a big exam?

BUMP!!!!!

Keep it going people 🙂

I just want to say that the temperature in Louisiana last night was 26 °F:scared: What was it like in Miami?

it's raining in berkeley too....can't have perfect weather all the time.

And as for the gym, I guess I will see you all there (if you come to the main campus) I have a knack for playing for IM teams (I'm on 5 this semester, hell I used to play club soccer for Cal, and now I'm trying to get in as much sporting as I can!)

LOL. IM at the undergrad campus or med campus? I think people were mentioning undergrad campus is where IMs are... I will probably be at the gym on a machine making sure that I am "le hot", if I attend main campus.

It's raining.

Just so you all know..."when it rains, it pours" is not a metaphor in South Florida. It's real.
I feel like I jinxed South Florida by saying this...anyone else feel like curling up under a blanket and watching TV all day during the torrential downpour?

For those that have been offered a scholarship...How did they notify you. Was it a separate letter or was it included in what your cost of attendance is?

awwww i really want a scholarship: OOS hurts a little bit

You are notified of the merit scholarships when you get your acceptance. For the diversity/need, I think you need to submit that form on the web. The cost of attendance letter includes the scholarship as one of your funding sources, but it says something like, "this cost of attendance includes all scholarship money received so far." So just because they send you a cost of attendance sheet, it doesn't mean that you won't be getting monies.

Did anyone else notice that they do not give you loan money for the $400 wellness center fee? I thought that was really strange, maybe it is just an error.

just called laura (the woman in the financial aid office, re: med school scholarships) and she said that the commitee meets every wed to discuss candidates. about 38% of the freshman class received financial help, in the form of 5K scholarships. 5k, 10k, 15k, and 20k were amounts that she mentioned (I imagine a couple full rides too). She recommended filling out the scholarship form (online) and also mentioned that while some scholarships have been handed out, obviously some people turn down miami to go other places, so that money is recycled and sent to other people.

She mentioned that they were in the middle of their process, and that scholarships would be continually handed out even through July. (both need and merit based)

also, she was REALLY nice and very talkative. If you have/want to ear about scholarships she is the person to contact (not hinkley, or emilio, or some of these other people, even though I love hinkley...🙂)

If any of you current students get a chance, could you please tell us what your days are like as a first and second year student. I am specifically interested in the amount of class/lab time, and the structure of the education (system/trad/pbl)

Laura rocks!! I went to see her today - she is such a sweetheart. She was actually the person from financial aid who did the presentation on my interview day 🙂

Has anybody else noticed that Miami is getting some heavy hitters to come teach and research at Jackson? It seems like every time I go to http://med.miami.edu/ they are announcing someone new.👍

I know...shh...don't tell people...it's our little secret.

I swear we always think alike p...it's scary 🙂

I go to Univ of Michigan and I work in a breast cancer lab. Dr. Lipman is the man around here. Seriously, the whole UM Cancer Center is freaking out that he is leaving. I on the other hand, am totally STOKED that he is going to Miami. I feel like going to Miami we are going to be apart of a school that will go through enormous growth and change while we are there. Very exciting.

In addition to what you've read on the website, the dean of the medical school held a meeting with the students last week and told us that the university is quadrupling the number of geneticists.
