I'm starting this thread to jump start the networking opportunities for the incoming fall 2010 class.

Please feel free to connect with other students as this will help the class of 2010 to get to know each other better.

Also state your personal info if you would like,
1. whats your intended major and study interest

3. which demographic area are you from

From me

My name is Tim. I grow up in NJ (armpit of the states). I graduated from University of Michigan with an undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering two years ago. Currently i'm pursuing my interest in MHSA and hopefully getting some solid research experience from some of the top professor in the field.

Since i lived in Ann Arbor for four years; I kind know where is the best place to live on and off campus. For public health students, the on campus option is kind limited due to undergrad housing priority. If you are lucky, you might be able to get into Mosher Jordan or Markley dorm which are right where the PH school is.

For off campus options there are plenty, but if you want to live close to where all the action and fun are central campus is a must. If you have a car and like the quiet environment, you could try out the north campus. At central campus there are some apartment complex behind CCRB. There are also houses along side the cemetery(Geddes Ave). U towers is another option with 1 to 3 bedrooms options. There are other apartments around south U and state, but when the weather gets cold it could be pain in the behind to walk home.

Please add any input. I might be totally off base. So continue the thread. Go Blue

Stop bumping this. Its freakin early March. Most people haven't made a decision yet. I'm glad you have but if people wanted to share that they are going to Michigan they would have done it by now.

You're just clogging up the boards.

Deem wasn't being mean, just telling you to stop bumping. They said what I was thinking. People are still waiting on schools. While its great you have your decision made, bumping the thread everyday isn't going to make people come out of the woodwork pledging their allegiance to Michigan. I'm sure in a month you'll get some hits.
 
I made it to michigan (Epi) but do not have a scholarship decision yet. Dunno till when I'm s'psed to wait. If they do not award a scholarship, will they inform that as well...'cause i need some sorta confirmation. Or would it not be too funny to ask? Have the same issue with Columbia.
 
Is anyone attending the EHS Nutrition MPH in the fall? If so, do you mind sharing your stats? I am REALLY interested in this program and would like to hear this upcoming falls stats.

I also have been accepted (nutrition) but am waiting on scholarship info to make my final decision. I'll be in town looking at apartments the weekend of the EHS open house. Can anyone give me some suggestions for inexpensive housing? I'd like to be off campus, but close. Thanks!

And DOgirl, I'd be happy to share my stats, but I'd prefer not to post them here. Can you post your e-mail?
 
whats u r price range and what are some of the perfeneces u have?
 
I'd like to keep rent as cheap as possible without sacrificing safety. I'm not quite sure what market rates are up there, but could I find something decent around $600/mo for a 1 or 2 bedroom? I'd need a washer/dryer and dishwasher, but other than that I'm pretty open. And I'd like to be close to campus. No pets or anything to worry about. Any suggestions?

you can find decent one around 600/mo, but i dont think most of the campus housing has dishwasher. Google map the place first, see if it's close to PH school. anywhere that is more then half of a mile will be pretty far to walk (learn it the hard way during soph yr, VERY cold).

I would suggest some place around Geddes (dont pass Linden St.), West Washtenaw, E Ann, South Forest. Ann Arbor are pretty safe in general, so dont have to worry about safty that much.

There are some big apt complex you could check out too, U towers (kind old, but the price range is good and really convenient place), Zaragon (a new upscale place, but pretty expansive), Loft41 i think is another place, kind far. If you have a car a place near the newly finished north campus apt complex is also an option.

I know what you mean! I actually visited Ann Arbor yesterday and talked to the student coordinator of Health Behavior & Health Education about this and she said that you will get offers of a scholarship BEFORE April 15, which is pretty much when you have to decide what school you are going to. I do not know if they tell if you if you don't get one, but I figure if you don't get one like a week before April 15 it is probably unlikely. As it is, the awards are limited. If it is anything like the HBHE department it might take a while. Apparently faculty died recently or something so they're behind on this stuff. Good luck! it sucks having to wait and figure all this out.
 
Hey everyone!

I was accepted into the MPH Intl Health Epi program earlier this week. However, I haven't received any info about finances or even when I have to respond with my decision!

Maybe I was spoiled by my undergrad, but was their SPH outreach to you similarly underwhelming/non-existent? I know it's a great school but the lack of outreach is making me nervous....

I went to the Admitted Students Day, and I didn't get the impression that the possibility of getting a scholarship ended after April 15th. One of the students on the SPH panel said she didn't receive notice of hers until July.
 
Thanks for the suggestions rbku. I checked out several apartments on visit day and feel pretty good about my top choices. With that said, are there any female, non-smoking public health students out there looking for housing? If so, feel free to shoot me a message.

I completely agree with you. I felt the outreach was very underwhelming. I went to Michigan for undergrad and had a PHENOMENAL experience (I transferred from a school back east), with faculty and staff always willing to help out, support and push students towards success. However I did meet with one individual on the SPH admissions board last year and she was really friendly and helpful, so, I dunno. Then again she's on the admissions board.

I was also disappointed in the lack of enthusiasm from the admissions department; I applied in November and heard back in January, and submitted my financial aid documents that month. I still haven't heard back about any aid offers or scholarships, despite calling the office repeatedly and continually checking the Wolverine Access site. I really love the program, but the amount of financial aid is a huge factor in my decision.

I got a finaid letter last week from them- it says the cost of the attendance is $53,609, and the letter only accounts for $36,000 of it: all loans, $25,000 UNSUBSIDIZED. Ouch. I never took out loans for undergrad and am really nervous about this.

What is everyone else doing to finance a UMich MPH?
 
Thank you for the info. I will probably accept my decision to Umich epi/int health track sometime tomorrow. With that said I'll need to look for an apartment. I heard that alot of the apartment around umich are not furnished, is that true? And altho I'll have a car, I heard it's just easy to take the bus to go to class. Would it be easier to live on Central Campus or North Campus and take the bus?

"I would highly recommend central campus just b/c the its close to everything, and u do not want to walk during the winter for more then 20 mins. unless you have a car of course. then northwoods might be an option, but you will be missing out the fun stuff.

There are couple places you can live if you have the money to throw around. Tower plaza, 4Eleven lofts, Zaragon. The Zaragon is pretty nice and close to pretty much everywhere. 4Eleven might be bit far, but again it's a new complex with a lot new stuff inside.

Most of the students will live in a house or apartment. U towers is an option, but be warn the price is kind high in my opinion. Room is kind small, and the whole place is like an asian gathering. lol

I am!! wait, are you a girl or a guy? sorry for asking. I'm a girl, who prefers someone who's pretty quiet and considerate. I'm well-organized and like things tiny and clean~
 
So I was thinking about looking for a 1 bedroom or studio/efficiency, but it seems like most of them are like $900 or above!! Is that right? Or am I not looking at the right ones?

Can someone help me or point me in the right direction??
 
one bed or studio could go up as high as 1000. the lowest might be like 700 something. Most prefer people perfer finding a house mate. please see the links i posted above for more info. Also check out facebook. Michigan MPH has different class groups; shoot someone a email for advice or ask if anyone needs share house.
 
btw U towers ( 2 bedroom) share aprt might have something (600 something i believe). they match you with your prefeneces (of course gender matched).

Hello everyone!
My name is Katie, and I will be in the HBHE track this Fall starting out. I have a car, so am interested in finding a place on campus with free parking, and wouldn't mind sharing a place with some other fabulous ladies.... so, let me know!
Also, how is everyone on finances... My loans came through as about 20,000 short of what the 'need' was put at, any advice?

It's a computer-based registration system and the incoming first-years will register at the end of orientation. You'll get a chance to meet with your adviser first and make up a "master plan" for your two-year schedule, although everyone deviates from this plan pretty quickly and it's non-binding.

Are classes typically easy to get into? I come from a large, public university and classes typically fill up at the undergrad level.
 
Also, what is the student life like? Are you pretty much in classes all day? Is there time to do volunteer work, research, etc?
 
I spoke with Sue Crawford in the Environmental Health Sciences department today. She said they still have scholarship money to distribute and they're hoping to do so within the next two weeks. So for those of you still searching for money, you may want to give your department a call and check your scholarship status. Good luck!

Classes are easy to get into, almost everyone takes the same classes each semester (not so much room for electives) but even if the electives fill up, which is rare, you can usually plead your way in without any problems.

I'll be in Ann Arbor this fall too, Hospital/Molecular Epi. I'm excited but totally intimidated by finding housing from a distance (I'm in upstate NY). How's it going for everyone??
 
I ended up deciding on Ann Arbor after all & look forward to meeting you all very soon 🙂 I just visited Ann Arbor for the first time and have narrowed down housing options but would like to have 2 or more roommates- any ladies out there still looking for housing around the $400-500 range? I found a few walking distance apts and more nicer apts/townhomes that are a bit farther away.

Also, I LOVE to travel and realize we have about 5 days in between our SPH orientation and the beginning of classes, anyone up for exploring around Michigan (beachtowns, perfectly preserved old towns, etc) with me?

Hi, I'm an incoming MPH student in the EHS department studying Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology.

I went to Spelman College in Atlanta, GA for undergrad and am originally from the ATL (born and raised lol), so this is going to be a brand new experience for me in a major way!

Hope that we all have a wonderful semester and successful year! Can't wait to see what awaits us!
