University of Minnesota c/o 2019 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm applying to UMN as well! Giving it a shot as OOS :xf:

I'm with you on that! Hopefully we will be lucky as OOS students!

Good luck, guys! :luck:

There's a few UMN students procrastinating around these boards, so feel free to ask questions.

I applied here as an OOS (also applied to Michigan and Midwestern). 🙂

Applied as an OOS. So nervous/excited!

Anyone out there know what percentage of applicants are selected to interview?? A rumor going around is that it's super high compared to percentage accepted..

I have no idea but I hope that if I get an interview it means I actually have a decent shot because Minnesota is a long ways for me to travel (I'm in NY)...

Something I'm worried about that I somehow just managed to catch. Over the summer I sent all my course syllabi to admissions to make sure everything checked out and was told everything is okay except I'm going to have to take another genetics elective this year because the genetics class I have is 4 quarter credits which only converts to like 2.66 semester credits and they require 3 semester credits. They okay'd my biochem course but that was only 4 quarter credits and they require 3 semester credits for that as well. Somehow I didn't realize this until now. I have the email saved. Because admissions okay'd it should I be alright or could they go back on it?

Ugh. That puts you in a really tough spot. On the one hand, you don't want to bring the issue up and have them say "Oops! Haha! Just kidding! That doesn't qualify." So there's the temptation to stay quiet. On the other hand, it would be nice to alert them and have them say "Nope, we're ok with it."

Tough call.

In the end, I'm not sure there is a right answer. The bottom line is that if you have something from them that specifically says your biochem course was ok, I wouldn't feel under any obligation to pursue it further. At that point, you presented them with the info (i.e. you did your part) and they said it was ok. The flip side is that if it was a mistake, and if they later become aware of it, and if they decide it's a reason to not accept you .... you don't really have any recourse, even if they did at one point appear to give it the ok. There's just no *practical* recourse.

If it were <me>, I'd drop them email and just re-affirm that it's ok, recognizing that I'm taking some risk they'll say "Oops. No, that won't work." But then I'd at least know. And if they said it wouldn't, you have time to take another course next semester to deal with it.

But that's just me - I'm the type of person who would want it resolved so I didn't stew over it. I don't think either approach is wrong.

I would presume it varies from school to school. It also may vary from year to year. When I went through the process (4 years ago) I made a guestimate by knowing how many days they interview, how many seats there were, counting up how many people were interviewing the day I was, and then doing some basic math ... and concluded they interview about twice as many people as they have seats for *in state*.

I have absolutely no idea if a) I was right, b) it's still the case, and c) how that compares to out-of-state interview spots.

My advice is not to worry about it one way or the other. About all that's really important is knowing whether a school has a very small # of seats or a pretty large # of seats. Beyond that, just write a good app, interview well, ask questions during your visit, and focus on projecting a very positive image to everyone you meet - staff, student, or fellow applicants.

The exact credit values aren't what they're looking at I'm pretty sure. Just the material covered, email to be sure if you'd like.

Although I am a first year at Ohio State (my IS), I got into MN last year and FELL IN LOVE. (I just couldn't justify the tuition when I also got into my IS.) Just wanted to say good luck to everyone! UMN is an unbelievable school. Actually, I've noticed that a lot of the research referenced in some of our classes is from UMN. Obviously interviews are ways away, but one thing that I thought separated UMN from the rest was that they really want to take the time to know YOU. It's a relaxed interview process. I can't say enough good things about this school and I don't even go there! Just thought I'd share my two cents 🙂

I applied! Does anyone know when we will hear about possible interviews?

Well 2 years ago (man time flies) I heard back for interviews around January 4th. No idea if that's a similar timeline to what's happening these days but that's what I have for you 🙂 Good luck!

I applied as well! When I did my file review last year they said they have a scoring system with in order to go on to the your file reviewed further you have to have a specific score. Does anyone know this score?
My last 45 is only a 3.22 however my science GPA is a 3.51. My gee was an epic fail Verbal 148 and quantitative 146. I had a 4.0 on the essay section. Ouch. I have a learning disability which is why I scored terrible. Let me know if you know anything! Thanks!

For the last ... well, at least 5 years, I guess, it's always been within a few days of the same time. So I'd expect it to be around then again ('then' being whenever kcoughli said it happened for her; I've forgotten when I heard) unless they change their process.

I'm pretty sure it changes from year to year (that is, the number you need to progress through the process), so knowing it is of limited value. That said, I can see where it would be useful to know how far off the mark you were if you applied and didn't get in, so that you could make an informed decision about the likelihood of getting past it the next go-around. If they didn't make it clear in your file review last time, just ask them specifically how below the academic cut-off you were if you don't get in this time. Hopefully it won't be an issue and you won't have to ask! 🙂

Ya, its always early January when you hear about interviews. I got my email about it on January 3.

I'm an OOS applicant as well. Good luck everybody! This school had by far the best supplemental application ever! NONE! I've only read about their Raptor center, I want to check it out. Has anyone been there? If so what did you think of it?

If you come see us for an interview, be sure to check it out! The Raptor Center isn't part of the formal tour or any of your sessions, but they are always happy to give walk-in tours during the daytime, so you can just wander over there during some free time (it's right across the road from the school and the small-animal hospital). You don't spend time there as a student (unless you have a particular interest in birds and take the initiative to get to know one of the relevant doctors and/or find a job there), but it's a neat facility.

I remember all too well how slow the days, and weeks passed by waiting for any news at all. No news is good news!
No news is good news? Does that mean they starting telling people no, before the starting telling people about interviews? Here's to hoping!

Unless they have changed the way they do it, they notify everyone via email at the same time. I can't recall when .... seems like it was early January. Could check last year's interview thread to see when people posted. It's always been within a few days of the same time every year, so I doubt it will change.

OSU is my IS as well and I applied to both OSU and Minnesota! Hoping I have the same choice you did last year!!

it scares me that they'll be informing us right around the same time that I'll be interviewing at the few schools I've gotten one at... talk about a confidence killer haha :/

I've been rejected and wait listed so far so my confidence was killed a week ago :/

yikes, I'm sorry to hear that... but you're still waiting to hear from some more I hope!
do you mind me asking where at? and how does the wait list work...?

sheesh sorry for all the questions hahah

Yeah so far I have heard from 2/5 school and I was rejected from those 2. I'm definitely looking into plan B's because Minnesota and Colorado are long shots but I'm hoping Illinois takes pity on me since I am an ISer

They won't be taking pity - they'll be recognizing your awesomeness the other schools failed to appreciate!

you always have your best shot at your state school! good luck!

I don't know, I've almost come to terms with the idea of taking a year off to get some more experience and have a 'vacation' from school craziness. I will be ecstatic if I get in this year but if I don't, I think I will only have a small mental break down haha

coming from the other side of the coin here, that's exactly what I did. took a year off, which ultimately turned into 2, to get some more experience and increase my chances. first time applying, but I spent a small fortune because I feel "old" and don't want to wait any longer lol. here's to hoping the wait was worth it, but I definitely think it was the right decision for me. it isn't so bad!

Omg. Life ditto.

Where all did you apply?

Colorado and Minnesota are my bucket list states to live in (or long term visit) because I am such a nature freak so I that was basically an extra plus to applying their for vet school. I am not a super-awesome perfect match for their programs but i'm pretty up there. (If I was to rank it I would think their programs match me about 80%)

and how does the wait list work...?

Can you be more specific about the question? What about the wait list are you wondering about?

Generally the way the system works is UMN will make offers (all at once) shortly after the interview period is over. People will have until April 15th (or whatever the standard deadline is) to respond. Once that date passes UMN will send out more offers based on how many seats remain available. There will be some amount of time for people to respond (I don't remember how long), and then they reiterate the process again. They keep doing that until the seats are full. They'll attempt to fill seats right up until shortly after the semester starts (in my year, we had someone withdraw in the first week, and the school actually found someone to take her seat). I think that was a pretty extreme case, though.

They maintain two wait lists, one in-state and one out-of-state, and they will simply start at the top of those lists and go down them as needed.

Not so rare - I'm pretty sure they added someone to our class just a couple weeks before the semester started our year as well. In fact I'm not convinced it was an entire 2 weeks before.

Yeah, but our addition was actually more than a week after classes had started. Imagine getting <that> call: "Hi! Still interested in vet school? Classes started last week, but if you can get here quickly....." 🙂

Gosh, I wish that would've been my call from the in-state wait list last year!! I would've moved from Illinois in a heart beat and they start a week before Minnesota. Actually, after a year and a half down here, I still would.

I got called off the in-state waitlist the end of July last year. . . I mean they probably made it to #30 or close.
