I think that every case where sodium is moving into the cell can be thought of as based on the pull from the sodium-potassium ATPase and hence secondary.

Really? Cool. Speaking of general explanation, I could have used some more basic explaining from Garrett. I found myself getting really confused about basic stuff like EPPs versus IPSPs, etc. That's where Costanzo came in handy. 🙂

So my Sunday night must see show is Intervention on A&E. It makes me feel like less of a loser. 😳 The woman tonight drinks 18 beers a day. 😱

So, are you talking about the Na+, Cl-, K+ pump. That one makes sense to me because it's moving K+ against its concentration gradient. With the Na/Cl cotransport, it just says that it moves Na and Cl into cells, which is going with the concentration gradient for both of them. Why isn't it just passive transport?

ya the one i was talking about was d. the na+/cl- symport. both are moving with their concentration gradient. im not gonna worry about it, but i think ill email garrett at some point if i feel so inclined.

There might be some other explanation, but that's just what passed through my mind as I was flipping through the syllabus.

I don't see it as something that is necessarily black/white. If the channel were by itself in the absence of a Na/K ATPase (which by the way has a rather high Km and is thus not always operating smoothly), then I'd have to agree that it should be passive. If used as a means to pull the chloride in and then just kick the sodium out which might be the case in the distal tubule of the kidney, then it would be behaving in a secondarily active manner. We could have definitely used a better explanation here.

I think I saw that one...did she have black hair and was chuggin a big beer on the bus on her way to work?

WooHoo!!!!!!!! I just got a 50% on the Physio practice mini 😛

I think I saw that one...did she have black hair and was chuggin a big beer on the bus on her way to work?

You saw it. She would drink 2 beers in the morning before she left for work. Then she'd buy a 24 ounce beer for the train ride to work. Then she bought beer for the walk from the train station to her office and proceeded to go on breaks every hour or two to get more beer. It was amazing. Apparently she relapsed post treatment but then got pregnant and had to quit drinking. The thing that always baffles me is how people can go on for so long with these problems without winding up on the streets. Of course they usually wind up sleeping on their mom's couch. 🙂

Interesting banana post, Freeze. I became intrigued and looked at some of the other links on the right. Bad idea.

Just to make sure that I have this down with all of the calendar issues, the mini is at 1000, right? I don't wanna walk in to find out that the exam is over.

What's the over/under on histo attendance tomorrow?

Lookin' ahead--PBL Thursday, IMPS Friday.

Hope you guys got your PCM straightened out. I'm with a primary care guy, and it has actually gone quite well for me--definitely getting some good H&P experience even if the cases are all cake.

HB gayness as well...mod exercise wednesday.

There will probably only be two MSI in histo (one taper, and Joe), but probably a healthy smattering of toof-pullers.

That's how I found that clinical pearl in the first place, when the red-neck sling-shot post was made...she apparently had a lot of "untapped" potential.

I am doing FP also this time...every single pnt we saw had a different problem which I thought was pretty cool. Plus the drug reps giving us free lunch is always nice 🙂

The mini is at 10:00am.

I'm not going to Histo.

I've never been to histo, and I figure I'm not going to start going today. 🙂 Argh, IMPS. My IMPS average for the last session was like a 68% or something, so I guess I need to study. I actually found the whole thing sort of stressful since we did so cr@ppy on our group quiz. We don't have a random brilliant person who's always caught up or just knows all the answers.

I'm going to Saints on Feb. 9, which is the Friday before test block. 😱 I figure it will only be a few hours, and I normally don't study that much the Friday before test block anyway, but still. I felt like I got a lot out of my last rotation, but I'm guessing you don't get much out of the overnight thing. I hear there's a lot of just sitting in the cafeteria.

I got a 68.7 on that stupid phys mini. I hate school😡

Hey Smitty -- I saw Dr. Chung today at school. Maybe he's back.

Yeah I saw him too. He looked to be in good spirits. 👍

I guess that I am going to have to learn a new exam code. 😡 Anybody have the 411 on what went down there? Somebody in my module told me that a name/grade/code list had been circulated or something like that. 👎

The email also said something about the student lounge needing to be notified. 😕

{RachelD} Don't feel bad. I forgot to divide the diameter in half on one of the Dormer Q's. I left before the key arrived so I don't know how I did, but I'm quite certain that I see a 🙁 in my future. At least we can make fun of Freeze for trying to take his exam to the front. (j/k Dawg--I'm sure you did better than me.)

It almost looked like we should have been given more time.

Yep, I forgot to divide the diameter by 2, too. I always miss stupid cr@p like that. I noticed on blackboard that last year they always got points back for something, so I'm guessing that will happen this time, too.

About the codes, I'm guessing the breach came with the whole biochem thing where they released the exam scores in alphabetical order. From that, you could go back and figure out everybody's grades if you were so inclined. I'm glad they're switching the numbers.

I'm really not looking forward to neuro tomorrow. :scared:

Leon posted (or his person did) grades on blackboard that were sorted alphabetically with exam id#'s. I guess if you wanted to you could have figured out someone's number. Big deal, I just tell everyone my grades.😳

HI-FIVE Rachel!!!! 👍

I got the exact same score...missed 10 of 32 and tomorrow will probably be worse.

I just saw that URGENT email.

I mean if someone like ME doesn't care about people knowing my grades why would anyone else? I'm pulling the caboose on our academic train 😀

That email sounded like they were gonna put the campus in LOCKDOWN haha

i heard someone took the spreadsheet i made with exam ids and class rank and used the botched biochem grades to match eveyones id and name and created a class rank by name. im not sure what would motivate someone to do that though. then again its like a car wreck i dont want to look, but if it was in front of me i probably would.

Am I the only one who got only 3 neuro lectures via notegroups?
We've had ~15 lectures.

We've had ~15 lectures.

Apparently, there was a huge notegroups package today, so that might have all those other notes. 🙂 I opted out of the paper stuff and got my $65 back.

I figured it was only a matter of time before someone attached names to the spreadsheet with all the grades/rank. I never saw it, but yeah, it would be impossible not to look if it were in front of me.

One night I went to the module to get my books after a shift at the hospital, and I saw one of our classmates standing in front of the board snapping photos with a cell camera. It thus doesn't surprise me that somebody would take the time to make a list (this is med school after all, few places will have such a concentration of competative people), but to circulate it would defeat the purpose of having the codes since they'd obviously get changed in response. Hello?

I think that they pulled the biochem grades once they found out they were alphabetical, so why didn't they just switch the codes then? Duh? Such a post had already violated privacy laws. Better yet, why post any lists? With all of this talk about how great Hippocrates is, nobody knows how to use the Blackboard grade reporting utility? (Then again, it had been some time since I saw somebody use an overhead projector in a 150-seat lecture hall until last Fall.) Some things never cease to amaze me. 😴 I can see, though, why P/F grading has become commonplace and many schools keep scores/ranks confidential.

HI-FIVE Rachel!!!! 👍

I got the exact same score.

Did they post the key somewhere? I sensed from the DB that you didn't get it in your module.

Better go try to learn some of this neuro stuff...

We'd all look I'm sure...but it's like when you can't help but look at someone's crack peering over the top of them jeans. lol

I'm still not sure what all the hubbub is over. As usual though if two people scream about something the whole class gets dragged into it.

I heard today that some chick wants to spend $6,000 erecting pictures of people in that area where the birds keep going kamikaze. She even got price quotes and took it to Dr. Schmidt...who I hear was like "ummm..."

I wonder if there was as much drama in previous classes or if we're just "special" 🙄

BTW Mrs Bagel...I noticed on the studco minutes they've started including more info...congrats 👍

****, I was hoping y'all were concentrating so hard no one would notice...
which I'm sure was hard, since I was in the ****ing MIDDLE of the row. It was like that commercial where the old man has to keep getting up at the movie theater cuz of his prostate...

If I ever get one of those "flip straight to the back" tests I'm ****ed.

At least now with the new numbers coming out, nobody will know I'm at the bottom of the "Whine About the Birds and Offensive Jokes" class....

I stand by the idea if grades were more transparent, not less, you'd know who to pat on the back and when. Like a closet drinking habit, you can fail quietly, while maintaining your facade. By the time it comes to light, you've already spiraled too far...

the exam results inside the glass-windowed cabinet on the second floor, in other words getting a record of everybody's grade

BTW the phys mini keys are on Blackboard now.

I thought that the whole bird thing was a running joke.

Johnny, I had to stop myself from responding to your comment about your sisters on the DB.

I find your post highly offensive and I'm gonna go tell the teacher!

1st---No one holds the rank of bottom of the barrel but me.
2nd---I'm not in the closet about my drinking...I can outdrink any 2nd grade girl in this county.
3rd--I know it was YOU who put the mini-me-condom up in our mod.

Johnny, I had to stop myself from responding to your comment about your sisters on the DB.

Go for it...they're trollops anyway 😀
Naked pics of them paid my way through college

Thanks for the heads up about Chung. I just dropped him an email. I think raising my anatomy grade will help me feel better about failing the neuro mini tomorrow.

Blair's syllabus is a breath of fresh air after stumbling through ODon's. At least something makes sense.

Blair's syllabus is a breath of fresh air after stumbling through ODon's. At least something makes sense.

I know. I just finished re-reading O'Don's syllabus for about the fourth time, and it still doesn't make sense. It's all these endless lists of stuff with no real explanation. It's also hard to tell what's extraneous and what we're required to know.

don't worry, it'll all make sense at the end 🙄 🙄

I'm sorry, but if I saw somebody taking pics of the cabinet, I'd probably get in a fight. Or look up their name on the composite and dime 'em out during class.

Something like, "Hey Over-competitive Test Result Picture Taker, can you post it on Hippocrates when you're done 'ciphering who is who??"

We're just supposed to have faith, right? 🙂 Unfortunately, if I'm gonna get it, it'll probably be after I miss it on the test.

Yeah, taking a picture is a little weird. I'm with Wiz that it would be nice if they just used blackboard for grades. Then they could just release their statistical analysis of the grades, which I'm a enough of a loser to be interested in.

Smitty you got me hooked on this Beauty and the Geek show. Too bad these girls aren't as pretty as you. I'm actually taping Rome. Good thing DH is a repeat. (I normally catch it on the Internet Mondays anyhow.)

I love Rome. It sucks since I don't have HBO and I have to wait until it comes on Limewire before I can watch it. 🙁

Speak of the devil -- Blair just posted on hippo that grades will be on posted on blackboard and not my exam ID #s. I just don't want to remember a new number.

I don't want to study. 🙁

👍 Big time agree there. I do want to know how I am doing relative to others, I just don't need to know who is who. I wonder what an HB histogram would look like.

I do believe that Rome is even more gruesome and depraved than Deadwood, and I am probably the only person in the US who flips from 7th Heaven to HBO on Sunday nights. 🙂

Ditto 👍

I'm guessing a bimodal distribution. I'll be the one in the second, lower-scoring hump. 😉

From following this and other threads, it seems that this is the majority of what the first years of med school is like. Endless lists of mindless data; all of it required to be memorized and recalled at a moment's notice with little cohesiveness. I'm thinking that if this is the case, organ systems based curriculum really seems like the way to go.

Good luck to all on the neuro mini! 👍

Indeed it's a very traditional school. I don't know if systems-based really solves the issues you mentioned (though I'd prefer it), but I think here we have few important people who embrace wide-scale change. Fortunately the boards are standard, so I'm sure that we're not being short-changed on anything.

I think here we have few important people who embrace wide-scale change.

I can just hear the curriculum discussion now....

Important Person A: "Many of the schools in the nation have changed over to that new-fangled systems based curriculum. From the super-top-secret USMLE comparison report that we get, our board scores are significantly below these schools. Does anyone think that we need to change the curriculum?"

Important Person B: "But that's the way we've always done it."

Important Person C: "Agreed, if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Oh well, random, rote memorization it is. Maybe I will have to make my own systems based curriculum to help me learn the material. I guess we will see next year.

i definitely waited about a week too late to start studying neuro. whoops.

Yeah I use First Aid from time to time because it has some good memory aids, and it has high yield systems stuff in it even though it starts out subject-based (e.g. biochem). There are some subjects (such as genetics and the fluffy psych stuff) that really doesn't really have an organ system, so it will be a debate forever.

What really gets me is the attempt at clinical exposure that is universally poor over M1/M2 due to the nature of USMLE I in itself. Our clin med text has a bunch of medical abbreviations in it, but we weren't even required to know them for our only exam. I got a chuckle out of that because one would think that it would be the least of what's covered in the first year. Kinda sad to think that a nurse aid is trained to understand a chart better than a first year med student. I asked my preceptor if I can practice physicals on the pts (you know, while they're waiting half an hour in the exam room before he sees them), and he said to me, "As a freshman? Wow you guys are advanced. In my day, we never saw pts at all until we were juniors." M1/M2 clinical exposure became a big school discriminator in the late 90's, but we finally added a basic physical to M1 this year. I've found that it's just like nursing school was. Be proactive and take the lead. You're not gonna get your money's worth if you just stand around and nod. Why the medical tradition treats M1/M2 as a teeth-cutting rite of passage baffles me, but I guess it must work. Either that or it's just the most expensive way to teach us.

I can tell that you've observed a few of the discussions on SDN. Indeed they are quite cyclical in nature, but that's what makes it a great time-waster. My posting personality appears different when I'm outside of here, but it took me a while to learn how many foreign med students post on SDN.

i definitely waited about a week too late to start studying neuro. whoops.

I hear that brother. I just listened to the micturition/erection stuff last night. I didn't know that the brainstem material was self-study. 😱

This one's gonna hurt...

I got the same score on neuro as I did on phys. 22/32. I'm glad I've started out the semester failing both courses. This is going to be a fun semester :meanie: ....

"Damn you, O'Don!!!" That about sums up my feelings about the first part of the test. I haven't graded my yet.

He said in class that we did not need to know the lamina. I wrote it down in my notes. I missed that question. Maybe we will get a point or two back so I can at least pass.

{RachelD} Keep your chin up. 👍

Anybody know what number that one was BTW? I'm afraid that I am not able to complain because I didn't listen to the lectures, but I heard many people reflect this sentiment. To me it was just one of many that I was mostly clueless on. Perhaps ironically, I missed 3/4 of Rodan's Q's, and his was the only lecture I went to. Let this be a lesson to you 2011er's... (That is, don't skim over stuff lightly that you thought was too easy to merit additional study time.) 😀

Different subject: I suggested that we get some new smileys over in the Donor's Club, and a few people have found some cute ones. Submit some that you like if you wanna.

Oh THAT lamina question! I don't know how that got in there...🙄

I think he did say that nucleus dorsalis was the only one to know. I think it was either 24 or 26. Form A.

The good/bad news depending on how you did: both were worth an infinitely small portion of our grade...
