I think buying something is smart. You might as well have equity in something rather than throw money away on rent.
I totally agree with this in principal. I currently own my house, and not only do I have equity in it, in 6 yrs it has increased in value about $30K-50K depending on who's looking.
On the other hand, with med school and 2 little ones on the way, we're going to rent for a year to keep down on the maintenance issues of a house for a while.
We went apartment shopping last week. I have to say, going from 2400+ ft^2 down to 1000 ft^2 is going to suck. I'm going to have to get rid of a lot of stuff.
