Hi!

I'm looking into dental schools inside the US. I am a naturalized citizen of the United States but I was born in Cuba. Spanish is my maternal tongue but I am fluid in both English and Spanish.

I wanted to know if anyone has experience with the Univeristy of Puerto Rico because it seems like a truly ideal fit for me. I've yet to take the DAT and I've completed the prerequisites. I've about a 3.2 GPA in my science classes. I've done extensive shadowing with both general dentists and specialists.

Hi,

The school does prioritize Puerto Rican students over US or International students. Out of a class of 40, usually only one or two are not Puerto Rican. From what I've been told, the average DAT scores this year have been the highest so far. The average from previous years has been around 17-18 so I'm assuming it must've been around the 19s and 20s this year.

Students who have volunteering and shadowing experiences are obviously favored. You also have to bring a portfolio on the day of your interview. They evaluate it and take it into consideration for your interview score.

The fact that you're fluent in spanish is a huge plus. The classes are in spanish and the books and ppts are in english so you need to be fluent in both.

Good luck!

Hi, I am actually applying for this year. I have a 3.32 GPA and a 18 Academic Average in the DAT and I am a PR resident. I don't know what are my chances. But I can tell you that you need 12 credit in English and Spanish. For the DAT they just consider the TS,RC and PC. You need to have at least 15 or more in the TS,RC and PA to be consider and a 17 AA is consider competitive. Last year average was 19 but its usually 18. They usually just accept 2 non residents students. Hope this helps you and good luck.

What worries me most about UPR is their prioritizing Puerto Rican students. While I do have some ties to Puerto Rico by way of a few relatives and a very close friend I don't have, say, an aunt or a cousin living there.

I was hoping to see if someone from "the mainland" has been accepted and could give me some insight as to what I should expect.

Thank you in advance for any help!
I suppose they will give you preference over someone from the mainland since you are from el caribe as well. I suppose... good luck!

I applied this cycle and I am a Virginia resident. They contacted me about a few social sciences I was missing and I'm currently taking them. I hope I have a chance. I'm from Venezuela but I'm also a naturalized U.S citizen

They are still sending invites. Their last interview dates are for the middle of march. So you still have a chance.

If you don't mind me asking, how was it? Did they let you choose the dates?

I applied to UPR this cycle and some one had mentioned a portfolio. What are they looking for in the portfolio?
