University of Texas 2018 Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, but the applicant pool was well over 900 for the class of 2017.

Where did you find this out from? They received 517 and 532 in 2012 and 2011 respectively. To almost double their applications received is crazy. But I guess that shouldn't be too shocking seeing how they received 38000 freshmen applications for 2013.

I'm a current P1 at UT, and it is part of the statistical analysis of our class which they presented us this year, but also something they also noted back when we interviewed last year.
By starting to use PharmCAS last year, they opened up the applicant pool much larger than in years past when it was a solo application.

Ahh. That makes sense. Did they tell you how many out of state students applied and how many were accepted?

No, no mention of out of state applicants just yet, but I know we have more than a few in our class. That being said, the vast majority are still in-state.

It looks like acc. to PharmCAS:
  • Estimated number interviewed for fall 2013 entering class: 250-260
  • Estimated number accepted for fall 2013 entering class: 140
And acc. to the Texas webpage, in 2012 they received about 500 apps...so about half get an interview.
Thank you!

Hello,
I am applying for UT this cycle. Could the UTCOP-ers please give me a heads up of what to be expected at the interview? (The process, how it goes, what to do and what to avoid). Also, I will appreciate it if you guys can tell me more about the school. Why did you pick UT? What sets the school apart? How's the curriculum?
I know those are a lot of questions but I'm truly curious.
Thanks in advance

How long can we reasonably expect it to take for PharmCAS to show that they received a transcript as part of the academic update? I requested that my school send a transcript as soon as I had my grade and PharmCAS appears to have not received it.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Mine just showed up yesterday, so it's kind of slow.

Yes! Lol. Has anyone gotten an email from them since you scheduled the interview, besides an email saying -this is your interview time - Just curious, my emails from UT keep going in my spam folder, darn yahoo mail.

If it's like the last year, they put you on an "interview rotation." Based on your group (which is predetermined, probably random), your group leaders will take you to each "rotation sites." Sites will include individual interview, clinical skills(?) presentation, QnA with P1 students, group interview, tour and others that I forget.

What to do. Prepare. Go over past interview questions, know how to approach group discussions, be professional, talk with a pharmacist you know etc.
What not to do. Don't be cocky; and if you don't know about a topic, don't make it up.

[I'll answer other questions when I get back]

My flight lands at 11, hopefully that's enough time in case something happens.

Can anyone who has been to UT Austin give tell me what I should expect?
I have looked over questions for the interview, but I am feeling really nervous about it.
I am also curious what the group interview is going to be like, I have been to UHCOP one maybe it is similar to that one?

cont. from my last post.

As far as why I chose UT... I think the first question to ask yourself is what state you want to practice in. I mean sure you can move after you graduate but people don't know how good your school is if it's out of state. Plus schools get you ready to take that state's license test so it makes sense to get your pharm education where you want to practice.

Now, if you've narrowed it down to Texas, I'll go on. UT is ranked high, we're 4th in the nation (significantly highest for Texas) for pharmacy schools and also a school with a long history. Also UT is the cheapest pharmacy school out of the top 10 (for residents of course). If you're ranked 4th in the nation, you don't have to change. It's much easier to sit back. However, I was impressed with UT because they were trying new ideas. UT didn't have group discussions during interviews until recently. That's new. We're required to have professional attire certain times of the week, that's new. Of course these aren't new ideas that UT came up with... but I think it shows UT is willing to change and adapt rather than sit back. The school is also trying new ideas for curriculum.

Honestly though, what made me decide to go with UT was during the interview. I loved how involved the students were, in contrast to other interviews I went to. It's also a testament to UT that they want current students' inputs. Current students that I met on the hallways were very smiley and well... just nice and relaxed. I didn't get that caring feeling from any other school.

I also like Austin because for me, it's just the right mix of interesting but relaxed. I've heard Austin called boring, but there's plenty to do if you look. Live music, art exhibits, art classes, bat watching, pole-dancing classes etc. But I think this depends on the person and what kind of city you like.

The set backs:
UT has stairs you have to take if you're in a hurry. (I've seriously heard this as a reason someone doesn't want to go to UT)
Austin can be boring depending on the person.
Living expenses can be high compared to well... uh... Kingsville.
Building isn't as new and shiny.

Curriculum... is alright I guess. I don't think it was too bad. Of course the stress is much higher because it's not like you can just drop the class like undergrad. Plus everyone in your class is as smart as you, so you can't count on the not-even-trying people to move the curve. You don't have to study 24/7 either. If you pace yourself and don't waste too much time on video games/internet/drinking, you'll be okay. Sure it's not easy but I doubt other schools are any easier.

Maki68> the group interview is very similar to that of UH.... except the question prompt is actually pharmacy relevant. (I interviewed with UH in 2012... so maybe they changed...) I personally had a easier time speaking up during the UT group discussion than UH because the people were less um... talking over each other? But maybe that was just my group.

By the way, do y'all have any pharmacy experience?

Thank you so much for posting this! I'm excited for my interview on Saturday.

I have hospital and retail pharmacy experience and I think most of the other people on this thread have experience too.

You guys need to stop cracking me up with this "we're ranked 4th" crap. The USNWW rankings aren't determined by any standard, they're set by anonymous opinion polls sent out to all colleges of pharmacy. As to going to UT because you want to work in Texas, pharmacy schools are regional in who they usually hire. Austin hires UT, UH, and A&M; Houston hires UH, TSU, and UT; and Dallas hires OU, SWOSU, and Tech.

Plus schools get you ready to take that state's license test so it makes sense to get your pharm education where you want to practice.

There is no Texas NAPLEX, just the law exam. Give it a week of studying and you'll pass. Just ask all of us non-Texas grads. As far as Austin being "boring", it depends on what interests you. If bars with live music aren't your forte or you're a bit on the conservative side then Austin is definitely boring. And arrogant.

Okay, then a great reason to consider UTCoP would be if you were considering doing something beyond just getting your PharmD and dropping into the workforce (Which there is nothing wrong with that)
UT has a strong emphasis on research and offers (repeatedly, with enthusiasm) everyone multiple paths to a career in research (Honors program, PharmD/PhD, Traditional PhD) with some exciting research going on both within our college (Ebola Vaccine, Addiction Studies, New Cancer Treatments, etc) UT CoP has consistently been one of the top institutions nationwide (13th nationally last year) receiving NIH funds for research.
If you are considering doing a residency, I'm sure you've heard how competitive they can be. UT matched 84% of applicants in our 2012 class to PGY1 residencies, part of a growing trend within the college. The college also offers 53 residency position.

I entice you to review the Dean's State of the college powerpoint, posted on our website (slides 37-42 might interest applicants most) : http://www.utexas.edu/pharmacy/annualreport/statecollege2013.pdf

(Slide 29 shows the statistics I mentioned earlier in this thread about my class' applicant pool)

Yes, everyone knows that the USA News rankings are very unscientific. They are really just an opinion poll sent to the deans of each CoP, and as such, they more reflect the consensus of the leaders of these colleges than anything else. But UT CoP isn't regarded so highly by anyone for arbitrary reasons. When you visit with us for interviews, we'll try and show you a taste of what the college has to offer.

Well the campus is closed tomorrow, the 24th, per the UT Austin emergency page.

My connection flight tomorrow from Houston to Austin got cancelled at 9 pm tonight, and got auto-rebooked to a morning time before I would even arrive to Houston. I was able to get one of the last available flights to Austin, but it would get here at 1 pm when registration starts...But now that the school is closed tomorrow, I have no idea if I should be relieved or to stress out some more. :scared:

It looks like acc. to PharmCAS:
  • Estimated number interviewed for fall 2013 entering class: 250-260
  • Estimated number accepted for fall 2013 entering class: 140
And acc. to the Texas webpage, in 2012 they received about 500 apps...so about half get an interview.
We received far more than 500 apps for the 2017 class as we were the first pharmcas class. I think it was over 1000. An interview at UTCOP is an accomplishment!

The world outside of Austin doesn't look at you guys the way you look at yourself. I know it's hard for you to accept the idea of someone turning down an acceptance letter from the Texas COP but money talks and I don't have student loans anymore because of it. AND I have a clinical pharmacy job in a city you guys try to call your territory. So much for a home field advantage

But UT has always been stingy with their scholarships. Never got one while I was there in undergrad so I left to pursue other options. So glad I did.

Is anyone else bothered that our interviews for today is cancelled? the UT campus is closed. I hope they don't reschedule to a date that i already have an interview lined up. I wonder what they are going to decide. right now i am patiently refreshing my email every 15 minutes since they said they would be sending us a follow up email.

Yes. I'm pretty bummed because I was really excited about getting the interview process over with. However, I am glad I didn't have to drive in sleet/snow. I feel bad for anyone who already traveled to Austin only to find that the interview wasn't happening. Luckily I was still in my bed when I found out.

"...For folks in your circumstances we are trying to fit you in tomorrow OR arrange a telephone interview. You should receive a communication by noon today."
I emailed them about my situation and what happened with my flights and that's what they told me.

I don't know what time your flight is, but if it's later tomorrow you should just show up at 9AM to UT Austin tomorrow morning, and they will fit you in I'm sure - That's what it sounded like in the email. Did they ever email you back?

I'm gonna do a phone interview unless I can go next week. Flights are too expensive for tomorrow, it'd be like an extra 500-600 since I had to cancel the ones today. They also didn't email me back yet.

Um wait so why exactly are you even on this thread...

If you have to ask the question then you probably won't understand the answer.
Enlighten me then; I'm just curious. It seems like the point you're trying to make is that UT is not a good choice, at least not for the reasons people have posted. If that's the case, what's your motivation ultimately for making sure people here know that?

Where exactly is your "alma mater" at?

Read my post again as I clearly identified my undergrad alma mater. Why is alma mater in quotation marks anyway? Lol

I'm bringing it up because universities who advertise these rankings are being dishonest with their students. That's why I have to explain to UCSF grads why we hired a Texas Tech grad instead of them, why we hired a Sooner over a Buckeye, and why we hired a SWOSU grad over a Texas grad. It's all about local reputation with pharmacy as it has always been. That's why the "top ranked" schools don't allow USNWW to rank via GPA and naplex pass rate.

If you're end goal is to work in Austin then Texas is your school but don't buy into the hype that you can name your job when you graduate.

I was talking about for pharmacy. You're talking all this crap about the program in Austin so I'm just wondering where you went.

All I know is that at my interviews at UNC, UGA, OSU, VCU, and UF,(all for which I am considered out of state and have been accepted to each one of them), the interviewers acknowledged UT's great program and asked my why I am applying to their school since I graduated from UT.

The dean at VCU, who was a former dean of Oklahoma's pharmacy school and associate dean for Texas's program, personally went up to me after my interview, and told me it would be a shame if I got into Austin and would not go because they offer one of the best programs in the world.

Also, the dean at UNC called me after I was accepted and jokingly said "UT fabricates almost the best pharmacists. I hope you don't get accepted to UT because we'd love to turn a longhorn into the best pharmacist"

But since all the programs I mentioned are "ranked" by USN, they must be inferior to your great "unranked" alma mater and their dean's opinions are invalid.

Hahaha whatever you say big boy. Your Dean and my Dean's opinion is largely irrelevant in the job market. I'm actually in the real world getting experience as a clinical pharmacist.

Leave your ego at the door. Seriously. Hope you're not trolling.

And I didn't say anything bad about the program. Just that the school isn't a name-your-job kind of program. Nobody really cares about the USNWW rankings, just makes you look silly during job and residency interviews for mentioning it.

Everyone has their opinions, who the hell cares.

On a lighter note, hope everyone's interviews today went well. Kind of feel bad for those who have to do phone interviews.

lol ! i agree.....hope everyones interview went well today. Mine got rescheduled for next week. I didn't want to do the Skype /phone interview thing!

It's got to be unfair for some applicants to do a phone interview. It's just not the same, and you can't evaluate them the same way as interviewing them in person. You can't evaluate their dress, their mannerisms, and what about the group interview? Not to mention someone with poor ethics might have notes up and read off of them during the interview - How would they know? It has to be a big disadvantage, I would think. I hope they can find a way around that...

yeah i am not sure how the whole phone thing will work out...but i guess it will have to do...its unfair to ask ppl to spend money on flight/hotel gain ....we all know how expensive our applications have been.......

Thanks for the input. Though I'm not exactly sure why it warranted me a "you probably won't understand the answer" because your explanation has merit imo. *shrug*

That being said, I guess I can tie in my reasons for choosing UT for all you applicants here.
I didn't choose UT based on rank. Quite honestly I am a person who likes familiarity, so since I went to UT for undergrad, I came back for pharmacy school. I also worked with a few of the College's faculty members in their research labs, and they gave me very good impressions of the program based on their work and their attitudes towards work. I knew that it was a wonderful program from first-hand experience, so, naturally, it was easy for me to decide.
As for Austin itself, I fell in love with it and would love to live here, at least while I'm young. Yes, some people might find it boring, but I am into the local music and food scene. I also like that it is sort of a "small big city"; it's small enough that everything I need is within reasonable driving distance, and it's big enough that it has plenty to do (in line with my own personal interests anyway). I came from that huge city called Houston and can only imagine myself living in such a place far away in the future when I am ready to really settle down for long-term.

In the end, I think the best choice is your own personal choice. Whatever you choose, you'll end up with the same degree and relatively the same amount of knowledge as anyone else (hopefully). I understand that it's hard to choose if you have never set foot on campus beforehand and/or can only hear about the program from word-of-mouth, but that's why you should ask plenty of questions while you're there for interview! 😉

For those waiting on confirmation email for rescheduled interview date... Have you received anything yet? I'm patiently refreshing my email every hour! Lol

Dr. Wilcox forgot to include me in the email on Friday, so I never got to confirm anything. He emailed me this morning, but now I'll only be able to do a phone/Skype interview.

Oh that sucks! Sorry to hear that! Talk about a wasted trip! As long as we get accepted and we WILL! lol. It's all going to be worth it!
