University of Texas 2018 Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Folks got called late last year, Idk about this year, hopefully it is the same!!! On that note, wait list email also went out at about 5 ish last year so every candidates should know their status at the end of today.

Also, this is from my P1 for who are still wondering.

As far as Facebook goes, we will have an unofficial group started in the next few weeks once we have a general idea of who will be in the class.

So Absentia, you're saying that people received wait list and/or denial emails the same day that the final half of the class was called for acceptance?

From what I know and understand from this year and last

1. Candidates apply to UT. UT ranks every one and sends out invitation for interviews.
2. Interviews are important. There are folks who have awesome stats but denied because their personal interviews are subpar or bomb their group interviews.
3. Adcom meets twice to discuss all of the candidates case by case, some cases are quicker than others. I am not sure how the adcom determines the order for discussion, but I strongly suspect that they discuss the stronger candidates first from what I have observed. The folks I have known from last year who got invitations in the first round had phenomenal stats/ statements. Again, this is purely speculation.
4. For some candidates, it takes more time. The interviewers explain the pros and cons and the adcom goes from there. Each candidate is either accepted, denied or wait listed by the committee. The adcom met last week, it took the weekend for Dean Wilcox to organize everything, get the acceptance list and wait list approved so that he can call today.
5. If you get accepted, you get a call. If you get on the wait list, UT will email you (my case last year, maybe different this year) to inform you of your position. If you don't hear anything, then well.

So you got waitlisted...I'm assuming a spot never opened up for you and so you reapplied again this year?

A question to those of you who received an acceptance call a week ago. Have you received a packet with an acceptance letter and other instructions? I'm still waiting for it. I'm wondering if I should call them.

I got moved up three positions and know both of the top two positions are P1 at UT right now, just not sure if one person above me just declined the wait list thus I got moved up or the third person also received acceptance into UT. If he/ she dropped out of the waitlist then probably 144 invitations were sent out, 20 declined and 1 deferred, which put the number of standing invitations at 123, opened up two or three spots for the top two from the wait list.

Have you received the email from the dean assistant to confirm your acceptance? I think that's all for now.

Just emailed Dr Wilcox. He says not all acceptances have been sent out yet. We still have a chance guys.
Thank you for emailing him! Did he say when they would send out the rest?

Haha, just as I start to resolve myself a sliver of hope emerges. lol

Yea I would like to know too! I didn't receive anything so I'm kind if worried. Maybe we are being put on a wait list?

To those who got accepted yesterday, did any of you get a confirmation email yet?
Also, congratulations and I can not wait to meet you all next year! 🙂

No I think he said we should receive it by the end of the week or something.... Frankly I stopped paying attention to what he was saying right after he said I was accepted..... I was too busy doing a silent scream n happy dance in my head! Lol

I still havent heard anything from UofU... so... I guess.... am I denied? 🙁(((
congrats to all who got accepted

Quick question.... are we just supposed to reply to the email they sent to accept our admission offer?

I would think there would be an acceptance packet for a deposit, but I don't remember them mentioning that over the phone.

Yesterday and today at around 5:15, I got a phone call from someone to my home phone oddly. I don't have caller id on my home phone though and my home phone is not my primary phone. I pick up the phone and say hello and I hear a man's voice say hello and then nothing else. I wonder what it could be? Could it be the call I want?

Anybody have luck with housing? These last few days I've been calling up most of West Campus but the prices are ridiculous...

North Campus wouldn't be much of a problem either but it's the issue of finding parking on campus. Most of the parking garage permits around San Antonio/Speedway are already sold out too so who knows when those will become available.

Google it, does it match the phone number of UT Pharm?

I commute from the Parmer/ North Lamar/ Braker stretch of Austin. Usually I park at the Triangle in their Park/ Ride garages, and have never had trouble with finding parking spots. From the Triangle you can catch the 801, IF and 1 to campus, I have seen many pharmacy students at the Triangle bus top, usually 20 minutes max riding the bus to campus. My living situation is kinda extreme but I prefer to live away from campus, it is an hour long commute but living cost is so much better plus I don't have to deal with the feisty downtown crowd. It's not that bad living that far away, the 801 bus is terrific and I spend it away reading anyhow. Also, parking permit opens up during registration for the next semester, it's just that pharmacy students don't register til right before school begins. Have you tried calling the admission office and see what can they do to help?

Well my home phone doesn't have caller id, so I don't know what the phone number is. If the same thing happens again tomorrow, maybe I'll contact the school.

You should check out North Campus. The area is quieter, a bit cheaper if you wait to lease at the right time too! I am currently on 32nd/Speedway and the university is in walking distance. Once in a while, I take the IF or 5! As Absentia mentioned, I know a lot of people that park along the route either at the IM field or (Hyde Park?) church and take the bus to campus which is <10 minutes. I am most likely going to start looking for housing in my portion of North campus soon.

Do you know if Intramural field require parking permit? I know the Hyde Park church garage is for the church and Hyde Park highschool. Do you have any recommendation in the area?

Just e-mail dr.wilcox, he will tell you your status. He also said that they were still discussing the wait list.

Discussing the wait list??? Does that mean we are all waitlisted or rejected?:nailbiting:

Did you email him? What did he say? I wonder if it would hurt me at this point to beg him to accept me or put me on the waitlist... 🙁 can't believe this is happening to me again. My stats are really, really great, and I have pharmacy experience. I know I didn't bomb my interview... what the hell are they looking for???

Well I know my stats were not good, so I'm not surprised about their decision with me. This is what he told me:
Dear Heaven: I am sorry to have to report to you that the PharmD Admissions Committee did not recommend you for a slot in this fall's PharmD class. I will be sending out an email via WebAdmit before the end of the week. I am still meeting with the Dean for folks who were recommended for the wait list. That email will contain some information about when I am able to begin advising for those applicants who wish it.

Again I am very sorry and I continue to wish you all the very best.

Dr. Rich Wilcox

Toph01, sorry to hear that. Though I wonder why Dr. Wilcox talked about how they're doing the waitlist when they're not putting you on it? Strange...

He included that because I had asked him when would applicants that were wait listed be notified. It's okay, I honestly figured I wasn't going to get in because of my pcat score. I just don't know why they offered me an interview in the first place.

I emailed him this morning too about my status and all he said was that he was still meeting with the Dean to discuss some of the people on the list, which included me. I never said anything about a "waiting" list and neither did he so I'm curious to what that exactly means

Thanks guys for emailing and telling us what's going on. I didn't wanna bombard him with emails, who knows, it could've hurt my chances with the waitlist. At this point I think we can only hope and pray that we're placed highly on the waiting list...

Anyone know about how many spots from the waitlist are usually added to the class?

I don't think emailing him does anything good or bad, besides calm our nerves. Dr. Wilcox always writes emails very informally and I don't think he's bothered by it. He's nice about it all and isn't snarky one bit. Though since he says emails will be sent to all pending applicants before the end of the week, you don't really "need" to email him now that you know.

I'm sure the waitlist spots fluctuate every year depending on the situation. I just hope it doesn't take long to get an answer either way because I need to start applying for scholarships for University of Houston COP if I end up going there

Also, it was my understanding that they usually send out about 140 invitations for admission in anticipation of 15-20 declining so classes end up at around 120 students every year. If that's true, then how does a waiting list really exist? Unless the list is like 2-3 students long lol

I was waitlisted for the class of 2017 and moved up 3 places. They let me know on Feb 25, 2013 my position on the waitlist; it closed on Aug 9, 2013. Orientation this year for pharmacy students is around Aug 24 or 25. I am not sure how long is the wait list for the class of 2018 but I do know that the wait list for the class of 2016 is about 25 more or less because one of the P1 I know was waitlisted. She was in the mid to late 20s and said it did not move at all for her, so she re-applied last year.

It seems to me that the competition is a whole lot stiffer than last year since the adcom met twice already and the Deans still have not finalized the wait list. Last year, I knew on the same date of the second round of acceptance invitations that I was waitlisted. I would have though that approval for the wait list should not take this long since everyone has already been discussed. Frankly, if folks have not received a call or email, they are probably waitlisted or denied 🙁

This is from the stats last year for the class of 2017. I don't know for sure if this is exactly what happened, but probably it is not far from the truth. I think 144 invitations were initially sent out, 20 declined and 1 deferred, which put the number of enrolled students at 123, opened up two more spots for folks on the waitlist. I know for sure the 1st waitlister is at UT, the first update told me as much. The 2nd waitlister is my friend. I don't know I got moved up three was because some one above me dropped out of the waitlist or got accepted as well. If he or she got accepted, they they sent out 143 invitations. UT limits their incoming class to 125, I doubt it's gonna change this year.

I heard someone got an email saying that they were waitlisted today. Did anyone else get an email?

I haven't gotten an email yet...Did it come to your regular email or was it via WebAdmit?

Just to clarify, one of your P1 friends was position #20-something on the waitlist and she got in? Also, do you mind sharing which position your were on the wait list initially?

No she did not. She reapplied last year and is a P1 this year. She will graduated in 2017. When the wait list closed I was fifth.

What kinds of things did you and your friend do to improve your application for the next application cycle?

Talk with Dean Wilcox if you are planning on re-apply. He will tell you exactly how to strengthen your application.

The way I see it, pharmacy experience is for the adcom to see if you really want to be a pharmacist. They want to be positive that you have the understanding for the profession and not just going in for the money. Loads of people do. I know people who do not have any actually experience yet got accepted because these folks have done their research. In their interviews they are able to convey their understanding effectively to show that they want to be in the program, know what the profession entails and stick through with it. You can achieve this by getting certified and work, or volunteer or whatever. The adcom do not care, they only want to see if you can show that to them that you CARE and you have done the dirty work so they can judge whether or not you can be in the program.

I know volunteering at a pharmacy in the Austin downtown area is almost impossible. Here are some tips:

1. Be very tenacious. Email the volunteer and pharmacy coordinator. Be proactive. Do NOT just sit and wait. At the hospital I am vonlunteering, they will let you sit at the Info desk for a year and a half. There are many competitive people swarming the hospital, gotta be loud and about.

2. Go that extra miles. I come in on Saturday morning so the pharmacists get to know me better. It is usually less busy during the weekends too.

3. Certified but cannot work? Go volunteer. There are free clinics in the Austin area. They will want you over another students who are not certified. Plus, you get to network. Many tech and pharmacists do not just work in the hospitals, they can hook you up elsewhere.

Also, retake your PCAT if needs be. Improve your GPA or at least keep it the way it is. Don't let it slips especially this semester.

For those who got waitlist emails, what/who's email address sent it to you? Was it a person's email address or a "do not reply" email address? I'm trying to figure out where my wait list email is...I emailed Dr. Wilcox on Wednesday and he said that he was still talking with the Dean about students on the list, which included me, and would send me an email by the end of the week. I still haven't gotten one and I see the others on here have...I don't want to be too bothersome so I not going to contact Dr. Wilcox again until Monday, though I wonder what's going on...
