Just received my post-interview rejection via snail mail, postmarked March 16. Interviewed early january, really let down on this one 🙁 good luck to the rest of you.

rejections always suck...good luck to everyone. BTW, anyone know about the movement from their waitlist..In-state vs. out-of-state vs Idaho applicants?

I know that usually there are 2-3 people from Idaho that get accepted to U dub and the UoU. Last year 2 chose U dub, one chose Utah - - atleast thats what my pre-med advisor told me. Just got emails from a couple of buddies who did not get in (Idaho apllicants) so it looks like the letters are here. Best of Luck!!!

anyone hear from the U this week???

For those whom have been accepted to The U I started a thread! Best of luck to everyone else.

Is it all the same envelope...or is this the case where big is better?

Youmust be playing the "alternate role" also!?

Are ACCEPTANCES snail-mailed as well?

My acceptance was two pages, small envelope. The normal acceptance is a larger 8" by 11" packet. I don't know why I did not get the packet but it shows that its not the size of the envelope that matters, its what you do with it.

Hahahaha! I guess you're right on this one.

FALSE!!!

Just being from California isn't what makes you have no hope of getting in. Having no ties to the state no matter where you're from will stop you from getting in unless you're a URM, or applying to MD/PhD. I'm from CA, and my only ties are through my wife's family. I just interviewed (which means they must've liked something in my app).

You guys are funny with all your speculation. I am a Utahn accepted to UCSD and waitlisted at Stanford, so you can be OOS and accepted to California. I am also accepted at the U and found out November a week after I interviewed - guess I was in the lucky 10, but then again I had a sister that went there... just be patient and don't buy into too many absolute statements posted here 😀 Good luck all!

Just got the letter from Utah.....another alternate list...

Will someone please drop their admission for me???
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I guess this waitlist is not ranked??? Man I want to have at least some idea of whether or not I get to go to school next fall.

I think you may have misinterpreted what was being discussed on the OOS issue. No one was talking about getting in to Cali schools from UT, but about getting into the U being a Cali. resident. You can't get into the U as an OOS unless you are URM, MD/PhD, or have significant ties to the state (own property, left just for school, etc.). Also, there are 10 reserved spots for Idaho residents. You are from Utah, so none of this applies to you. None of this is speculation; it is written policy.
http://uuhsc.utah.edu/som/admissions/nap_rreq.htm

Being part of the "lucky 10" may be more speculative, but this is a ball park figure, not an absolute. This is the conventional wisdom among all U applicants I know and also among the several M1 and M2 students I know. Even double this is still a small subset of the peple who have to wait until March to get their accpetance. Your being part of this subset is not surprising hearing that you were accepted to UCSD and Stanford -- you must be a strong applicant. I'm at the U and know tons of applicants who know other applicants I don't know. I've heard of 3 other people who recieved their acceptance before March. These are people that no one is surprised about being accepted early. I've also known non-trads and reapplicants in previous years who got accepted earlier. There doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule, but the "roughly 10" seems to fit with the experience of many people at the U.

Congrats on those other great acceptances. 😀 Are you planning on going to Cali or staying in Utah?

Rejection Letter Received.

Interviewed late in January.

OOS, with GPA/MCAT above the U's averages.

I'm surprised, but not upset. My student interviewer made the place sound very crappy in terms of both the administration (i.e. unaccomodating with anything that was off the beaten path and, of course, the fiasco with the re-take recording policy which was changed on-the-fly and screwed over many students when the Dean's Letter was written for them) and the student body (i.e. clique-ish among the LDS students, chauvinistic, etc.) - not a place that this student enjoyed (which translated into a poor picture having been painted for me in our hour-long exchange).

anyone mind sharing their stats?

Mind you I'm only on the alternate list but my general stats are

3.55 overall 3.3 science undergrad gpa
3.96 graduate gpa
37S MCAT
Some volunteering, although not the usual stuff, lots of medical exposure/experience, also 28 years old married with one kid, so maybe that makes me non-trad.

Also, does anyone know how much movement the Utah waitlist sees each year? I need some movement....

Oh, I should add to my previous stats that I am an Idaho applicant.

Impressive stats, I wonder if the volunteering held you up, 37S.. well done! Anyway, my understanding is that being an Idaho applicant, your in a separate wait list pool. Only movement among Idaho applicants will matter (you probably know this). I was told last year that at least two people from Idaho got in to the U but chose another program, UWSOM for the people I know about. My adviser said she did not know about Idaho applicants that were not from BSU, so out of state residents... who knows. But my US weekly med-school guide has it listed that 30+ out of state applicants were accepted, and around half that number were enrolled (I don't have the book in front of me, but if you want the exact numbers - let me know). This number must include us Idaho folks so there is definitly a significant # accepted that go somewhere else. You need to find out what those folks are going to do, I wish I could help but everybody I know who applied to UWSOM got denied or wait listed.

The undergrad grades weren't too great...and I'm not the most suave interviewee... but I am really hoping that some of those accepted at the U were also accepted at Washington. Here's to waiting...😳

Best of luck, everybody I know (except for myself) applied to both programs - its the Idaho thing to do. The waiting sucks but one of the MS2 guys I met at my interview didn't find out he was in until July! I hope to see you there... I'm married and 28 as well, with two kid's... Hope you make it!

Yeah, sleephater...i hope to see you there as well, maybe you could give me pointers on kids too, my little girl is only 3 weeks old and I LOVE sleep...but don't get much of it anymore😀😀😀😀

I've got two girls, all I can say is your @#$%$!. They own me. Will you sleep...no. Will you have any money...nope. Will you know the intricate differences between Barbi and Bratz dolls? Yes. Dora the explorer and Diego... oh yeah. Thats why I hate sleep, it reminds me of what I used to love. Just empty your wallet except for a starbuck's card and accept that your little one is already plotting on how to control you..and she will succeed.:laugh::laugh:

I know it...she already looks at me as though I am pitiful and she is just putting up with me until she figures out how to use her arms and legs. Then I'm in for it for sure.

You guys crack me up! I'll be having a family soon too! I'll join your club. Best of luck, Beeser20!

Outstanding!! Congrats Beeser!!!

I have been working with a couple of realtor's for a few months, I figured if I did not get in then I would move there and get residency and try to find a job at the hospital - I really wanted to go to UoU - so I have a pretty good idea of what the housing market is like. Lot of options. I have a family (like you) so I have been looking at some of the surrounding areas like Sandy and Draper, lot of house for the money + good investment = strong possibility of me living in one of those areas. The market is softer then the Idaho market so there are deals to be found. I'll be going down to SLC to house hunt during April. Still hoping to find something in SLC...
Anyway I'll be happy to let you know what I find or give you info on the realtor's I have found... my brother in law works for Re-Max here in Boise so I got reffered to a couple of guys in SLC.. both have been very helpful so far. Feel free to PM anytime.

Congrats again! As far as I am concerned NOTHING beets UoU 2011!!!

Don't forget Davis County! Although I was shamed by Utah, I graduated from BYU in December and moved to North Salt Lake so my wife could be closer to her SLC job and I could be closer to my Utah biochem lab.

I'm renting a very nice little townhouse from my friend who is looking to sell it as soon as my wife and I leave in August (in fact, he owns 2 of them in the development and is trying to sell both!). My wife rides the bus to work (10mins to downtown Salt Lake) and I drive to the U in less than 15mins.

This friend just bought a home in West Farmington and is probably <25 mins to the U as well. Incidentally, their home is in a brand new development and this area has seemed to be as affected by the crazy housing market.

Also, my sister just bought a home in East Lehi (less than 1 mile from the Cabela's) and her husband gets to work in downtown SLC in less than 25 minutes, too.

Thanks SLEEPHATER. My wife and I are also in searh of a nice home. However, I may look in the northern part of Utah county: Lehi, Highland. My mom is a realtor in the area and is helping my wife and I find a place. For sure don't waist your money/time renting. It's more to your benefit if you buy. Plus, if you sell after 4 years, houses sell rather quickly around here. If you guys are looking for a realtor, I'm sure my mom would be willing to help. Later! Good Luck!

hey Scoot

Does your mom know how to get a med student who won't have any income a house loan?

Anyone hear of any movement on the waitlist? If so, was it for OOS or UT/Idaho residents?

I'm a CA resident really hoping against hope that I get off the waitlist.

...Get in while the gettin is good because come July prices will soar again. Anyway, if you have anymore questions PM me.

That is pretty ballsy! There are lots of opinions on the Utah real estate boom. Half of them include the word "bubble" and some of those also include the word "over."

I'm not convinced either way, but I've got friends my age in Las Vegas who got sca-rewed.

Bump...

bump/ can anyone tell me about the features of the university of utah? i am interviewing there in less than two weeks, but am having a very tough time with finding out about the school (they don't seem to advertise very well). for example, what curriculum features do they have? what specialty do most of their grads go into? do they have any special spanish medical programs, etc???

I interviewed their last week, but I'm still not sure about everything. I know they have a great genetics center right next to the U, and a ton of research opportunities. Nothing really special about their curriculum, 8-12 schedule with lab for 3 hours in the afternoon at least twice a week. Nice new building and some state-of-the-art educational tools.

thanks for the info. i actually just was out there in august, but they really didn't talk about their curriculum too much. if anyone knows any details, I would greatly appreciate it.

by the way, concubine/other interviewees.. how did you feel it went? were your interviews relaxed?

My fourth year med student interview was very relaxed, straightforward questions right out of my file. My faculty one was a little wierd...but this could be an isolated case. She kept asking me about things I would do as a hypothetical leader of a country in conflict. She asked questions around this topic for about a half hour. I don't know, I think I did ok.

that's interesting.. i've seen those questions pop up in the interview feedback thread. doesnt seem like many interviewees take too kindly to them.

EDIT: were the hypotheticals at all about medicine?

No, not really. I kept using my experiences as examples of what I would do in this situation, and sometimes refering back to analogies between doctors and their patients.
