University of Waterloo Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, first of all you are NOT missing 6 prerequisite if you're doing 3 of them THIS term... you're only missing 3!

Secondly, don't stress man, it's all gonna be good at the end 🙂

And did you apply to the two pharm schools in Quebec? How about UofT?

And you didn't mention: did you get an interview this year?
Thanks for the encouragement guys
I was rejected for this cycle (not surprised at all though, it was expected for the reasons I said already). In my head, I'm counting the next cycle as my first "real" try...I'll have my prerequisites done, and hopefully I can get at least A- in every class from here on...

Regarding the 2 schools in quebec, I have applied and got rejected...my chances are actually worse here because the first admissions screening is based solely on your grades. For me, that's already pretty much a killer blow haha...all my pharm experience and references are worthless in the first stage. But the knockout is that the schools here don't use gpa to screen, they use something called the "R score". I dont know if you guys know what it is but it's basically your grade compared to the group average...there's a bit more to it but that's gist of it (you guys can wiki it if you wanna waste some time).
Anyways, my r score is not very good(it's **** lol)...and unlike the gpa, it's a tough s.o.b. to try to get up...it's not impossible but it's freaking difficult...easy as pie to see it sink though. My gpa looks better than the r score, but I don't wanna sound like a whiner, because obviously I had some bad grades and the r score reflects that, however the r score puts a magnifying glass on that **** and won't let go lol. I hear people having big gpa comebacks quite often(heck I made one) but I don't recall ever hearing stories of big r score "comebacks"....

I didn't apply to UoT for this cycle because of the PCAT...before this semester, my last "real" chem, bio and physics classes were done like 5 years ago in cegep...I didn't remember anything...so probably not in the best shape to perform. I'll definitely give it a try next cycle. Even then, I feel my chances at UW are better. Doesn't hurt to try though.

You seem like a very bright person, and will get far by trying and trying again. Don't give up. You have the will - it's obvious from what you've said that you're also very determined. Keep it up. You'll have a great chance next cycle by 1) raising your GPA to at least the cut off (if you have met the cut off, then raise it as close as you can to an 80%) - just work as hard as you can and aim for minimum A (i know that when I set a minimum that high, I tend to do better) 2) increasing your ECs; try volunteering at your uni, join some organizations at school, volunteer at your religious centre, and just keep an eye on any volunteering opportunities and 3) getting a LOR from a pharmacist - also, I advise anyone who applies to get their AP edited many times before they submit it. 🙂 good luck!

Actually, the bio and chem portion of PCAT is not as hard as you'd think... just study this summer for like a few weeks and give it a try... and with regards to "better odds", just using this year as an example, the "odds" of getting into UofT are almost double that of Waterloo... both schools got around 500-600 applicants but UofT admits twice as many students.

Anywho, the point is that if you don't mind doing the PCAT, and if you have decent chem marks (above 70 ish) then you'd be fool not to giving UofT a try 😉

It depends on what that stuff is lol 😛 But yes, I've heard you can!

Thanks 🙂 Do you also happen to know how many interviewers will be in the panel? It doesn't say in the interview invite and I was just curious 🙄

I think I read somewhere 4 interviewers. Talk about pressure!!!

A Question of my own:

Hi guys, I'm flying in from BC. I really have no idea how to get there.... Do I take a flight to Kitchener or Pearson? and how do I get to the campus itself from the airport? I tried to google it but no luck...

Thanks in advance!!

ps. If anyone else is going from BC, I am willing to share room! Plz let me know.

For some reason I always thought it was 3 (one pharmacist, one upper year student and one faculty member) but maybe it's 4...

yeah i always thought 3 - but 4 is alright i guess what is everyone wearing?

i bought a suit (w/ a skirt) for the uoft interview, so i'll very likely re-use that for this one.

that's cutee!! i'm imagining a pencil skirt? it would be nice with a fun top underneath (like soft ruffles or a nice colour) and a good excuse to buy new heels!! lol

yup pencil skirt! i was super excited about buying my 1st suit (haha so corny), i completely went all out with new shoes too! it was really more of an excuse to shop than anything else 😛

you'll definitely get some extra points 😉 and shopping makes everything a better experience lol

anyways for the people who were wondering, i know a guy who got in the program last year and he said that there were 3 pharmacists at his interview & he also said the r/w test was pretty basic

Hey! Welcome to SDN!
How was his interview like? I don't know what will distinguish who gets in and who doesn't if everything seems pretty basic... anyone have any ideas?

Does everyone have a good idea of what to say for their spiel?
Do we have to begin with a basic intro to ourselves, like how u would answer the question "tell me about yourself"?

I think I have the basic content of what I want to say, but I'm having trouble coming up with a good "structure"..

So frustrating!!

I know someone who also got in last year who said the RW/WT was really difficult, in fact so much so that they didn't even finish. Guess every one is different.

hey guys,
so turns out you're right, the panels consists of 4 interviewers. I searched google to find out more information about waterloo's interview and I found this article, which I think is very helpful:
http://futurepillpusher.com/index.php?topic=9.0
Also, my friend did the waterloo interview last year (but got rejected) so I asked her about it and supposedly they only had 3 interviewers last year consisting of pharmacists and students and she said the test was a basic journal article (I think her's was psychology based) that you need to summmarize the results and discussion of. She also said that you should be confident and that they will question you back on your answers.
I've decided to reject my interview offer so hopefully one of the sdn members who got rejected will have an interview now 😀 and I wish you guys all the best on your interview. Hope my information was helpful in some way 🙂

wow that link was so helpful, thank you so much!!
do you know why you're friend didn't get in after the interview?
why do I keep thinking that the only way to be rejected after the interview/test is if you totally mess up.. are they going to be really picky?
and WHY ARE U REJECTING UR INTERVIEW?! 😕

WHAT, what happened... why are you declining it, you worked hard for it??? 😕

Your welcome yazahra89, I'm glad it helped 😀 My friend is the kind of person who studies hard and gets great marks and I think she did really well on the test part of the interview. It was probably the interview herself, her 5min presentation might not have been as convincing to the interviewers. Basically, you really need to do something unique so they can remember you and to make that great impression on them like singing 😛 So if you can find that special unique thing about you, then I'm sure you will be accepted 🙂 Just don't sit there and talk about yourself/life because they've been through many applicants and are probably bored by then lol.
The reason I declined it is because I graduated in June and I've been working since then and I really just want to start pharmacy school in september, I don't want to wait anymore. If I could've started school yesterday I would've done so 🙂 And also, ever since last year, I've fallen in love with UofT and I really want to study there. I've met people from UofT; students and pharmacists and it seems like such a great place to be. I'm not saying waterloo is bad or anything, but it's just my personal preference. I love its location, its curriculum and how you get summers off 😉 And ever since they rejected me last year, I find it my mission now to prove myself to them 😛 Besides, I'm sure I wouldn't have been accepted into waterloo anyways so it would be better for another well-qualified applicant to have a chance. And I'm sorry RX24, I am sure you will do great on your interview 😀

It's really refreshing to see that you've really set your heart on UofT - you wanting it so badly and loving it for everything that it is, reminds me of why I chose Waterloo - for personal preferences also; so it's really nice to see that people don't just want to get into pharmacy anywhere but have their hearts set out on the right place to be. Good luck with everything! You deserve UofT - i'm sure you'll get in!!

That's the spirit that I'm talking about 🙂 I love how you have so much confidence in your abilities and I'm willing to bet that you'll get into UofT for sure this year 😀 Hope to see you next year at Leslie Dan :xf:

Thanks yazahra89 and Helloeveryone 😀
Whatever the outcome is at UofT, I just want to know that I did try my best. The reason I felt so bad about last year is because I didn't even try and that's what really bothers me. But yes hopefully we will be classmates at UofT :xf::xf::xf::xf: I'm really excited for May 14th!!!! 😀😀😀

Why did you reject? You should have just taken the invite and not gone to the interview. That would mean the rest of us would have 1 less person to compete against. Anyways aren't you worried that if you don't get in to U of T you wont have a backup?

IT WAS HELL...I am worried I didn't pass it..then my interveiw is out the window :'(

yea...i'm hoping i can still pass the course and somehow manage to maintain at least a 75% av. for the pre-reqs ...which means i'm gonna have to study SUPER hard for thermo UGH, basically i'm planning on just wow-ing them at the interview...maybe i'll learn how to juggle flaming batons between now and then, i feel like that'll make me a memorable candidate haha

& i guess the comprehension test varies with who is taking it

15 more days until interviews begin! haha.. everyone probably thinks i'm so annoying! 😛

I love your countdown, I will never miss an important date!

On another note, I hate exam timeee! My last one is on the 28th, and I have my interview on the 29th 🙁

lol aww thanks!!

as for your exam time, that suckss! i don't like how some uni's make their exam periods run so late.. i hope you do well and the exams are super easy so you'll feel good before ur interviews!

Well I don't think the faculty would've been too happy with me not showing up and besides I would feel bad for that person who is next on the interview waitlist. Don't worry 1ive2die, you will be accepted regardless of that one person 🙂 Also, I do have a back-up, I have 2 other schools I applied to 😀

thank you so much for this! & good luck with u of t!

Thanks & your welcome; Best of luck with your waterloo interview 😀

lol, I think a better question is: why WATERLOO have their interviews soo close to the end of the exam period... I know a friend of mine who has an exam on the 29th (at night) and got the 29th interview at noon time 😱

good point! they should really take that into consideration - it's not fair to a lot of students

i couldn't agree more...

i had travel plans from the 27th-1st, and sadly had to take a hit and cancel the trip for this interview. i admit it was my fault for not checking the interview dates in the first place but i hate that they do the interviews over such a limited time span, i mean at least give ppl the choice of 1-2 weekends...why cram over 200 applicants in one weekend.

yeah come to think of it, i really see the frustration now... i guess i just got lucky that my exams will end on monday. i also don't think it's good for the interviewers.. like how will they have enough time to absorb each applicant's presentation/answers when they're in a huge rush to get through 240 students?? it would have been nicer to split it up in two groups like uoft does, but i guess we'll just have to work with whatever we've got.. at least we're close to being pharmacists.. can't complain when it comes to that lol

14 more days until interviews begin! :luck:

I know. My exams don't finish until the 28th and interview is the 30th. It's not as close as some of you, I know, but it's still not great either. 🙁

On a different note, I think someone asked this already, but what are you guys thinking of doing for your 5 to 10 minute presentation? I'm having a lot of trouble deciding, because it's a little intimidating, hearing that some people are singing and dancing and whatnot. I just don't know what I could do that would be memorable compared to that. 😕

lol, you don't necessary have to sing nor dance to be memorable... you can, for example, talk about some fascinating unique experience in your life (e.g. an adventurous trip, or an interesting hobby, etc)...

Think about it this way: imagine you are one of the interviewers, what kind of thing would make you remember an applicant and what kind of answers would make you give the applicant a good rating on the interview?

Lastly, I think it's more about how you deliver your message that makes it memorable 😉

Best of luck, let us know what you'll be doing for your presentation portion of the interview 🙂

Thanks for the advice, helloeveryone! 🙂 What you said definitely makes a lot of sense. If I may ask, what are you planning on doing? As for me, I think I still need to do some more brainstorming before I pick anything. Hmm.

Well, since early childhood my family has been moving around a lot... so i'm gonna talk about the experiences I've gained and the things I've learned in each place 😛

Well, I'm currently studying for a pharmacology exam... gotta admit it's HARD... too many classes of drugs to memorize 🙄

But other than that, not too bad... as of tomorrow I'll be 3/5 done 😉

How'bout you?

Oh nice, where else did you apply to?

I applied to uni of alberta and uni of london. It's hard to apply to pharm schools outside the province because your chances significantly decrease and some schools admit to not having taken any oop students in 5 yrs or so 🙁

sounds nice 🙂 good luck with all those applications, although i'm sure you'll be in UofT next year 😉

Well, I'm currently studying for a pharmacology exam... gotta admit it's HARD... too many classes of drugs to memorize 🙄

But other than that, not too bad... as of tomorrow I'll be 3/5 done 😉

How'bout you?

I'm sure you'll do great!! keep studying hard 🙂
i've got one more left and although i'll be done this monday, i feel like i won't be able to enjoy my summer (or not enjoy it) until june 15 lol or at least until i finish with my interview knowing i did good :luck:

Good morning SDN! Are a lot of you feeling like this? 😴, I just had 2 exams last night running on only 3 hours of sleep (no coffeee.. not a fan of it).

Anyways, I tried squeezing some info out of Louise (to no avail) about the average application GPA for last cycle . She did mention that there will be over 200 interviews (like last year) .. although I thought I read on the forums that it was close to 200. so at least it may be less than 240!

i am so sick of exams already and just need it to be over! 🙁

240 interviews sounds about right, considering they accept 120, that leaves our chances at approximately 50%, which is pretty on par with uoft as well.
