Unlv

I interviewed and was accepted at Unlv, along with a couple of other schools. If your decision is between UNLV and Temple I would not pass up a chance to interview at UNLV. They have the most amazing facilities. All digital, no books all material on laptops. Nice sim lab, you start in the clinic your first week with D3s. That is where I am going. I am sure that because they are a new program they will have some glitches to work out but I think that those things would be a small price to pay for the other things that they offer.
For me, being a Las Vegas resident, UNLV was always my "just in case" school. I always figured it would be an absolute last resort. After interviewing there, though, I was very impressed. The facilities are fantastic, and the curriculum is quite flexible and progressive from what I could see. The faculty seemed quite sincere about adjusting the curriculum to keep it on the cutting edge. The very first class apparently had things quite rough, as I think is generally the case for any new school. However, they say things are getting way better for each new class.
Keep in mind that many of the primary sources complaining about UNLV are dentists in Las Vegas. I personally know of at least four dentists who lament and complain about how terrible the school is. I always take their comments with more than a grain of salt (try a box of salt), since their practices and professional futures are obviously going to be impacted by the school. First the change in Nevada licensure procedures, and now a new school to churn out extra dentists in Las Vegas by the dozens. Las Vegas has been known as quite a lucrative market for dentistry due to the patient to dentist ratio. I think many dentists choose Vegas for this, and now aren't pleased that the school is going to change the dynamics of the market. I can't blame them one bit for not liking the school.
This is all just my opinion, but my main point is, I was impressed with the school and would be extremely happy to go there. However, since I'm not a dentist, I can't give a definite thumbs up on the school and its procedures, so you might want to ask around a little more.

I am a DS1 and all I can say is GO TO THE INTERVIEW. It is the best school because the faculty treat you as a partner rather than a student. I love it. They are there for us all the time. The facilites are incredible. New everything! Plus, the way everything is set up is great. The teachers provide us with powerpoints that we download everyday and it is pretty much all the info you need (in most cases). You don't need to go through the DVD texts unless you feel the need. The teachers cut and paste what they put on the exams onto these PP and it is just sooo convenient. As far as not installing on our laptops, its true. BUT, it is a security thing since our clinic system is hooked up to them. You may want to ask older students about this if you are curious, but I just don't think it is a big deal. UNLV is such a great place to be, and it gets better and better. We TREAT patients in our first semester of our second year and we were in the clinic assisting the first day of school. PM me if you want..... Good luck wherever you end up!
This seemed to be the case with Dr. Webberson, the guy I interviewed with. He was extremely friendly, and it seemed like he had that kind of respect for the students.unlvdmd said:I am a DS1 and all I can say is GO TO THE INTERVIEW. Just an interesting tidbit of information. My friend just interviewed there last week and he said that they shared the average stats of the people that they have already accepted both in state and out of state. They were a 22 DAT and around a 3.7 science GPA.
Ya, I think that their waitlist will experience some movement.

i find this hard to believe. the adcoms told him that??
I don't find it hard to believe. I have a 3.88 science and 21 dats and had a good interview and I haven't heard anything yet. I'm still hoping to get in, but it sounds like they are only letting in the "superstars" at this point. When I called last week they said their next review was on the 16th. Hopefully, the rest of us will start hearing around then.

ya it's true. It's in their presentation. Did you interview there? Druing the first presentation Dr. Ancajas goes over every stat possible. When I intervewed in october, they had the average stats of all the people who they sent interview invitations to. So I guess they just added the average stats of all the people they have accepted to this point. I know that the DAT is right on but my friend just told me around a 3.7 science GPA.

NO, those you can install. It is only certain things like instant messenger and those kinds of things. You can install and download stuff that doesn't interfere with the security stuff. You can pretty much have anything but instant messenger. I am compuer stupid, but people listen to their music all day so it is for sure OK.
Just so you realize, numbers aren't everything. I am an out of stater and I have been accepted to Vegas. Timing and how you interview can also make a difference.

Wow. Congratulations on your acceptance! I thought my interviews went well, but since I haven't heard yet I'm not sure. I know numbers aren't everything... hopefully I will have what they're looking for too !

Totally bump this one. I'm also in Vegas. With a reasonable GPA and DAT score, I wanted to go to CA or NY better than staying freaking Vegas. All my dentists are telling me that UNLV is a piece of sxit school, but lately I've realized that might not be true, they haven't even been to UNLV! I have my concerns about the reputation of the schools and I think UNLV will rise very fast just as it's building a twice as large campus in a couple of years.

The EXACT same thing has happened/is happening here in Arizona.
I think UNLV is a good school and has lots of potential! I'd probably be there if I weren't here in AZ.
I had my interview over there and I all I have to say is WOW! WHat an incredible school, Dr. Kingsley is quite possibly the nicest professor I have ever met. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and courteous and the facilities were absolutely outstanding. I go to UNR (so we should be rivals, right 😉 ) but I could not have been more impressed.
The DS I interviewed was a great guy and really knew his information. I was extremely impressed.
Excellent faculty, facility and students- I hope I'm accepted...

Does UNLV have Residency Programs?

UNLV doesn't as of now, but there are pedo and ortho here in town.
I have one question on UNLV's application process. What if I do not have a recommendation from a dentist I shadowed, but have 4 letters of recommendation, 3 from science professors and 1 from a previous job from Pfizer pharmaceuticals? Do you think that they will review my application? BTW, I helped out at a Dental Lab for about 50 hours...

I don't think that they will. I didn't have one and they put me on hold until I did.
The UNLV Board of Regents has approved an Orthodontics Program at UNLV. So, actually we will be having an ortho residency program soon.

That means people would be able to apply to specialize in ortho at UNLV after graduation?kokopelli said:The UNLV Board of Regents has approved an Orthodontics Program at UNLV. So, actually we will be having an ortho residency program soon.
