Unmatched programs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How ironic. I recall several people posting to this site stating Duke didn't even invite them for an interview. I thought that was pretty ballsy for a new program. Perhaps they were banking on their "big name" to sway potential applicants and made their rank list way too short. Obviously, this is all speculation.

Congrats to Apollyon. I read about your quest on the EMRA forum and you are most deserving to be a part of the EM community....

Congrats Apollyon and good luck to all.

I have a question for you folks. Has anybody heard why Kalamazoo had half of their spots go unmatched? A very similar program just up the street in Grand Rapids filled so what happened? Anybody who scrambled or tried to scramble there have any info?

Thanks

The PD at Kalamazoo offered me a position in error (my first name is the same as the guy he wanted, and last names are similar), and he said that this was, indeed, the worst day of his life. He said that he was working in the ED today, goes to the office, and said that the beginning of the worst was there. He sounded surprised, and it may have just been one of those statistical things that happens (versus the snobby and snotty attitude of places that have a match list of 20 for 12 positions, and act that way on the phone when they don't fill).

2 years in a row, now, MCV, Metropolitan, and Drew/UCLA have not filled. Either they are not ranking enough people, or ranking everyone, and it's not enough.

That's really strange that Kalamazoo didn't fill all their slots - a nice community-based program that treats the residents well and gives a great training experience. I know Dr. Overton, the program director - he is a real nice guy, and sells the program well.

Apollyon:

Congratulations on your success - it's great to see that you got the thing for which you've worked so hard and so long. I'll bet you feel like you just won the title by a fifteenth round knockout while losing on all three scorecards 🙂

Anybody surprised that a lot of NYC programs went unmatched, i.e. Mount sinai, Lincoln, Downstate?

I thought they were decent programs, although not in the same league as Jacobi and Bellevue.

Yo,

I don't know what happened with the NY programs. A bunch went unmatched, some quality programs too! Methodist, Maimonides, SUNY Kings, Lincoln, Mt. Sinai, Metro.

Some surprises that filled: BI and NYP. A program that almost lost its accreditation and a brand new one. WOW!

I'm not sure if the new program NYP hurt Sinai and Kings, but I think it did.

Other surprises...Duke!!! that's funny. Much love to Apollyon, but I pretty sure that there's going to be some talk in the hospital come July. Duke is strong in IM and surg, and EM has to deal with both those departments....my advice don't take any ****.

thoughts?

An EM senior (at Mount Sinai...) told me that the optimal year for a new program is the second (like at Duke), because the now second-years have gone through the original pains in the @$$, so the REAL problems have been covered - they are the true guinea pigs, so their pain is our benefit. I know exactly what you mean about not taking any BM - the PD told me that what she liked about me is that I am a straight shooter. I REFUSE to let ANYONE browbeat me into not admitting someone, or moving to another service. I'm too old for that.

Talk is cheap - people that talk got nothin' better to do, and that's when I am all over it. The proof is in the pudding, and, if the people are solid, the talk quickly dissipates.

And, come on - even if it is the WORST, it's still at Duke! Yeah!

I concur, though, in my surprise that BI filled, but not at NYP - like Duke last year, people follow the Cornell/Columbia name. Likewise, Maimonides got what they deserved - not interviewing/ranking enough, thinking they're more than they are.

New York is kind of surreal for EM, and residency in general, anyways...I have been telling everyone how happy I am to get the hell out.
