UNTHSC/TCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
December. I thought it was a bit early, but I guess they wanted to do it before pre-match ends and it had to be done before the semester ends. I had to reply to the acceptance by the nov 30th, I'd expect more to go out in the coming week.

For those of you OOSers that have been accepted...how long did it take them to let you know? i'm going on 5.5 weeks now and so am a little worried...

It took them six weeks to let me know but I interviewed at the beginning of September and do not begin accepting until at least October 15 but was accepted during the first round notified on Oct 19.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Need..........acceptance......can't......breath................:beat:

I just bought an engagement ring, and I'm supposed to meet the parents this weekend...it'd be so nice to have an acceptance by then. I think there'd be less to worry about as far as whether they'll like me or not.:scared:

Check your status page......I got into TCOM today!

Right there with you man.

Here's a stupid question from someone who hasn't even been accepted. Is that December or January 15th? If I'm not accepted by then, I may go and be like the guy who stares in restaurant windows. 😳

Oh yeah...here's to having no acceptances OR pride.

It's December 15th, and I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you're an applicant that hasn't been accepted by that time, you aren't supposed to go. 🙁 At least that's what it says on the website.

It's ok. I'm not so desperate I would attend. Well in truth, I am desperate enough, but I still wouldn't go. 🙂

Do you know if they are having another one? I'll be graduating on the 15th!! I'm headed up to DFW after the ceremony, but I definitely won't be there in time to attend...

I got the call to set up a shadowing/informal interview with one of the rural faculty physicians yesterday so that I can be in the ROME program. Still no acceptance yet...I found out my app. got held up because me supplemental LOR never showed up. US Mail....so reliable most of the time, fails me when I needed it most. Got the doc to fax it in this time, but I'm pretty sure my chances are a bit stunted because of this...

One of my interviewers was head of that program. Nice guy.

Is there anyone out there who would take an offer from TCOM over the MD schools here in Texas? I am in that situation now!

I know people who have done that. Probably not any of the UT-system schools or Baylor, but I'd go to TCOM over Tech or A&M in a heartbeat.

Well, I got into both TCOM and San Antone. I am from Dallas and ALL my family is there.

yeah, that's a tough one. I guess it depends on what you want to go into and where you want to practice. If you want to go into one of the primary care fields, then TCOM is a no brainer. If you want to do something really specific, then I have no idea. It's very hard to get unbiased info that isn't anecdotal about DO's getting into certain fields.

I am wanting to do either general IM or peds.....

I personally would go to TCOM then. They've had to put in a lot of effort to be competative with the rest of the texas schools and it shows. I'm also into a lot of endurance sports so some of the OMM is appealing to me.

Thanks.....I really appreciate it. Have you heard from anywhere yet?

Thing about TCOM is that it is just as competitive to get in to as other schools in TMDSAS (except for UTSW) so I think you should decide based upon what you are comfortable with. DO after the last name or a MD? I have come to know plenty of people who chose DO over MD since they were very passionate about what DO degree has to offer.

What's interesting is that TCOM has stellar record in placing students all the allopathic places in TX and up around.

What do you think about curriculum difference? People during the interview?

One thing you dont have to worry is tuition differences.

I pretty much ruined my chance with a late application. Unless they would still call me... :luck: Everyday I wake up, thinking today is the day I will get a call from Ft worth.

I am currently a fourth year at TCOM in the midst of applying/interviewing for residency. From a perspective of almost being done, I can tell you that TCOM was a great choice for me and I would do it all over again if I had to.

When considering MD vs DO- if you have had dual acceptance, choose which school you will feel most comfortable at. Administration is key. The admin/deans at TCOM are very student friendly and GREAT student advocates. Their #1 priority is making sure you are learning and not being over worked. I rotated at JPS, Plaza, Cooks, Harris, Baylor, and Dallas Methodist and had pleasant experiences everywhere. All my attendings were great.

You can match into ANY field you want from TCOM. It has a great reputation. With that being said, dont choose a medical school based on what you think you want to do when you are out. MOST change their minds. I personally am applying to only allopathic fields and have recieved interviews to all of them. My fiance is two years ahead of me, is also a TCOM graduate and scored a coveted Derm spot. At TCOM you will be well prepared to score very well on the USMLE, as well as COMLEX.

I hope this helps some of you in your decision making. Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions about TCOM.

I'm starting to feel like the ugly girl staring at the phone hoping someone (TCOM) will ask me to prom (med school)....seriously, I've been checking my status page every couple hours since late last week.

Your application is currently under review.

I can't say I agree with that statement in it's entirety, but I'd say that it'd be a good choice to go TCOM over UTHSCSA.

I just interviewed yesterday at Tcom, got the call early last week to go interview. They told us that this week was the last for interviewing.

The medical center in San Antonio is pretty badass. It is huge, and there are tons of hospitals and clinics within walking distance (or at least a short bike ride) of each other.

I've worked (research) and interviewed at UTHSCSA ('05 waitlisted) - and I've also lived in Ft. Worth and visited/shadowed at TCOM. UTHSCSA is not bad but IT IS San Antonio. However, they are also one of the schools who recently doled out a good 30 seats to wealthy foreign med students while at the same time, not expanding current resources. Bad deal if you ask me and proof that all the talk about "noble, NFP systems" is complete bull****. Ft. Worth as a city is also grand when compared to SA. I agree with you about Dallas, tho (40k a year millionaires).

anyone goin to the open house this saturday? does anyone know if they will have another open house next year before school starts.. ??

Did anyone else receive the TCOM Christmas photo? I have yet to hear back from them so it's made me nervous!

I got the card today. Very nice. 👍 An acceptance would also be nice. 😀

Why do you think it is a good choice to choose TCOM over UTHSCSA?

Hey everyone. So I'm in the same shoes as jojobead... pre-match to UTHSCSA and TCOM. The decision-making process is pretty tough, I was impressed by both schools during my interviews, and felt right at home at both of them. I'd say I'm leaning slightly towards UTHSCSA, but there are still some thing about TCOM that I'm having a tough time letting go of.

And man, that Christmas Card from TCOM only made this decision harder!

Anyone else have any thoughts? I guess a major factor is that I currently am very intested in pursuing clinical oncology. My gut feeling is that UTHSCSA would be a better environment for me, but I am also torn because one of my mentors and doctors I shadowed in Waco is a TCOM grad who went on to residency at S&W in Temple and now is a clinical oncologist...

Go where you think you'll be most comfortable and happiest as a student. There are a ton of hospitals right around TCOM that you can rotate at. I'm pretty sure that Cook Children's is one of them, and I know from earlier practicum experience that they've got a good pediatric oncology program there. Short version: You won't lack opportunities.

On another note, I'm pretty sure that today is the last day for early acceptances...🙁

What makes you say that?
I asked the rural program lady that called me if she had any info on admissions stuff. She said she thought the last earlies were going out this week. She's not on the adcom, so it's hear say, but I'm pretty antsy today....

Good luck DocRawk (your stats are great!!) and PT2MD on getting that TCOM acceptance. I am absolutely pumped. I am so excited about attending TCOM in the fall and am constantly looking over their website for any new information I can get. I definitely hope you guys will be joining me in the fall!

Take heart. I called this morning and they said they will continue to send out acceptances until the end of the year.

I've never been so happy about being wrong....especially since I haven't gotten a call yet today. 🙁

I'm not convinced you are wrong. They could simply be telling everyone that to get them off their backs. I hope not, but I am tired of checking my status page 6-8 times each day.
