Hello all, I am a veterinary student, equine focused. I am wondering what discussion, from the vet school, from group meetings, SCAAEP or others, has occured at other vet schools regarding the issue of equine slaughter. Also the knowledge and thoughts about H.R. 6598, a measure known as the "Prevention of Equine Cruelty Act of 2008."

My school has not had anything formaly from the cvm. Our SCAAEP brought in a speaker to talk about animal welfare, and the unwanted horse issue. Many students have also been advocating their legislaters to vote no on HR 6598.

Thought??

Thanks

I'm a first year, so maybe our class just hasn't had the outlet for it yet, but so far I haven't heard about any discussions, organized activism, etc. I think for the most part people know what the debate is about but not much beyond that...I think one of our lecturers briefly mentioned the issue but didn't go into detail. I think some organized activism or discussion would serve the equine community well and I think a lot of the backbone behind overturning any laws will have to come from the horse lovers beyond the veterinary community...

It's quite the topic.

As a horse owner/lover I obviously have my own stance on the topic as does everyone else.

I actually had a vet tell me I should take my then 4 y/o OTTB we couldn't get/keep sound or quite figure out what was wrong to the auction to cut my losses. I ended up turning him out for 2 years but in the end I gave him away anyway.

To me, the issue isn't the slaughter itself. It's getting them there safely and as minimally stressed as possible.

Agreed- I would rather see horses slaughtered than tied to trees to starve to death. I think the horse industry should put its resources towards regulating transport and slaughterhouses rather than banning slaughter completely.

My school:
We are having a speaker come in in a couple of weeks to talk about horse slaughter and I'm really glad. First years have an "issues in vet med" type of class, but horse slaughter has not been discussed so far, although we have talked about California Prop 2 and some other stuff....
