Do you have any acceptances at other schools Meg?

Thankfully yes, I do. I have been accepted at the University of Toledo and I'm on 4 waitlists. Now that I think about it, if I didn't have Toledo I would pretty much be going insane right now, so kudos to you for staying sane! Goodluck with finding a job and the MCAT although I truly hope you won't need either!

Congrats on that acceptance! Hopefully you can enjoy the rest of your senior year and relax a little before you get into the big time stuff next year. It is finally getting nice out here and it is making the studying even harder! :meanie:

Thank you! I don't foresee any relaxing until classes end, but that's only 14 days away!!! I suppose I'll survive =)

Geez, sounds great. I kinda wish this waitlist year had been while I was finishing up college. At least then I'd have plenty to occupy my time while waiting for that darn first-week-of-May-deadline!

On the other hand, I am making some money, and working for a year has made me extremely anxious to get back into school. You don't realize how much you enjoy academia until you get away from it.

For me, March went by extremely fast, but now that we are under a month until the big day, April is going by slower than ever! Getting ready for graduation and trying to find a job for the summer/next year if I don't get in isn't even making the days go by any quicker. I say we all start throwing in money to send to Louisville to release our position a couple weeks early 😉

For those of you on the waitlist, I just wanted to let you know that I just withdrew my acceptance. Hopefully it will come your way. Good luck guys.

Thanks for the heads up Bob and congrats on your success this far!

Even if people withdraw, they won't accept anyone new until the waitlist is ranked right?

I believe you are correct. Plus, I had my friend who is accepted check his blackboard account and see how many people are accepted there right now and it was 175 as of yesterday. That means there are still more people who have an acceptance there and haven't turned it down than there are seats in the class, so I would assume nobody would be getting a letter until that number goes down (most likely near or after May 15).

Do you remember what the desired class size is? I know they told us but I forgot.

I believe it was 155 or 160, but I'm not 100% positive.

That's what I would've said, so it's probably about right.

So...do you think when they say "first week of May" they mean the first FULL week (5/5 - 5/9) or the first week that contains days in May (4/28 - 5/2)?

I know this is totally neurotic, but I have nothing else to think about these days...

Ha, then I am being totally neurotic also because I was wondering the same exact thing!

Haha I'm positive that even if someone told us it was the second week, we would ALL be checking on 5/1 =)

5/1?!?! I have been checking every day for the past two weeks! Ok, ok....so I have a problem....

I have a question for you all since we are, for the most part, in the same sort of position. I am planning what to do in my year off if I do not get off of the wait list. As of now, I have a job offer from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Research to come work in a new division that they are forming for human embryonic stem cell research. However, I also have an offer from my research mentor here at NKU to work for her as a research assistant. There are ups and downs at both places. My research mentor is going to match my pay that I would receive at Children's (~ $30,000). If I go to Children's, it sounds like more prestigious to me, but I think I would most likely be doing grunt work only. At NKU, obviously I would still be doing grunt work, but I would be heading the two or three projects going on in the Neuroscience Laboratory (I would supervise the undergrads, have to do the ordering/budgeting for the entire lab, etc.). Both positions have full benefits that are decent. Do you all think that one of the positions would be more beneficial to me than the other concerning my medical school app? Hopefully, I will find out soon that I just don't need to worry about this anyways!

Do you all think that one of the positions would be more beneficial to me than the other concerning my medical school app?

First of all, congrats on both job offers! I think the answer depends on where you want to go to med school. If you want to go to Cincinnati, then I definitely think working there would give you an edge. However, if you have your heart set on KY schools, then I think either job would look equally favorable. Like you said, hopefully it won't matter in a few short weeks!

Thanks for your input 🙂 I am more partial to the KY schools and I am leaning more towards staying at NKU with my research mentor. It's interesting research anyways. We are starting a new project on Parkinson's and I have worked with PD in the past and then the other project is working with using dendrimers to deliver drugs across the blood-brain barrier. I hope we find something out this week. I know UK sent out a round of letters finally asking people to confirm if they want a spot on the wait list...which is weird because they told us we were on the wait list back in October, but apparently it was more of just a hold type thing. The scary part is, my friend who is OS received a letter to confirm his wait list spot yesterday and I didn't. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing or if maybe the mail is just slow. Hopefully since UK is starting to show some action we will be seeing it with Louisville. Anyways, enough rambling for one post. I hope you all had a great weekend!

UK is probably just giving people a chance to drop off the waitlist if they want so the adcom can make better selections off of it. I think UK has a pretty low rate of acceptance off the waitlist, but I may be wrong. I did hear that the funding for the 10 additional rural-track seats was rejected, so that's not good.

Here's to hoping that UofL let's us know at the end of this week so we can move on just a little bit with our lives!

I got the letter from UK today and it was pretty much the same thing that we got from Louisville saying to write back if I wanted to accept a position on the alternate list. I have also heard that there is a slim chance of getting off of their wait list. But, this is a Louisville thread, so enough with that! Bring on the alternate list ranks! This is really messing with my studying for finals...

So what exactly would you all do if you get into the top 1/3 of the class? I mean, will you start apartment hunting in Louisville, doing financial information, and all that? I know you're not accepted until you're accepted, but how early in the game would you start doing these things?

I've given this some thought as well. If I am fortunate enough to get into the top 1/3, I am going to call down there and straight out ask them what their typical stats for the top 1/3 getting in are and also if I should be looking for a place and filling out the financial information. Most likely, they will tell me that they can't tell me anything and that it varies from year to year. I then plan to look for a place to live anyways so I at least know of a place if I get accepted. I'm also going to figure out exactly what I need to do for financial help so I know what I have to do right away if I am accepted since we are getting a late jump on things.

I think when I interviewed they told us that the top 1/3 always gets in, and it's only if you're in the 2nd 1/3 that it's questionable. I'm wondering if that applies to both IS and OOS applicants. I think if I get into the top 1/3, I'll probably wait until June to do anything. I feel like the majority of people who are going to get off the waitlist probably will by June 1, so if I'm not in by then, I'll probably bank on not going to Louisville.

Seem like good plans to me. 👍

I did hear that it's been a rare year that they don't get through the whole top 1/3, but with my luck I'm not counting on anything (were I to get top 1/3 that is). My big concern would also be finding and training my replacement at work on such short notice. I'd hate to have to find a place in L'ville, but still have to be in Lex so much for work. Although really, I'm probably getting WAY ahead of myself here. Back to MCAT studying!

I thought you were going to move to Louisville anyways, regardness of med school. Have you changed your mind?

I'm currently an undergrad at UofL, and for those of you who have visited both UK's and UofL's health science campuses, which do you prefer?

How urban is UK's campus? (I've obviously never visited) UofL is smack in the middle of downtown, which I don't really find appealing.

They really both have their ups and downs. Yeah, Louisville is right in the middle of downtown, but that isn't necessarily bad. Being in downtown Louisville (which is much bigger than Lexington) gives you more hospitals to do your rotation in and may give you a chance to experience more. Louisville also has the better simulation center. They really made sure to show that off when I interviewed and toured there. However, like you said, it is in the middle of Louisville and traffic could be fun. As for Lexington, it is a lot smaller. But, if you get a chance, go tour UK. The Lexington area is nice, but the roads are set up so dumb that it makes it hard to get around. LikeClockWork may be able to tell you more about the area. As for the school, it is actually attached to the hospital, which was kind of nice. For me, it created an atmosphere that really made you feel like you were on your way to becoming a doctor. The building was a little harder to get around in than Louisville's medical building. The facilities at UK are alright, they seem a little old, but then, with the exception of Louisville's Paris simulation center, so does Louisville's facilities.
Keep in mind, that the area is only a small part and there are many other things to consider. For instance, UK does block scheduling where you don't have a lot of classes at once and you tend to be done in the early afternoon giving you time to study/shadow docs (I believe the students called it PCM)/whatever you need to do. Louisville does the traditional scheduling where you are in class from 8-4 or 5:00 and your tests are together mostly (they say it is better preparation for the USMLEs).
As for which campus/school I prefer, I would have to say that I don't favor a certain one heavily against the other. I did have a better experience at Louisville as far as them making you feel at home. It just seemed like they were really interested in me and were trying to recruit me more than UK. However, I didn't have a negative experience at UK either and I could see myself happy at either school. I just hope I am lucky enough to get off of the alternate list at either school this round!

Sorry if there was a lot of rambling and I hope this helps. You really just need to go tour both schools and see where you feel most comfortable.

I don't think that was me. I'm going to hold onto this job I already have. Bird in the hand and all that. Plus, UK has much better Masters programs for what I'm looking for.

Just an update...my buddy just checked the number of people currently accepted to Louisville and it is down to 167. I think that is pretty good since a couple weeks ago it was 187 and we are still two weeks out from May 15. I also checked the website and there are 155 total seats for 2008.

The facilities at UK are definitely newer than UofLs including the brand new Chandler Hospital by 2010. With the hospital being right on the undergrad campus, it definitely has a different feel than UofL. For perspective, I was solicited by a homeless person on the steps of the med school at the UofL pre-orientation thing. Its definitely in a more seedy area.

But as mentioned, there are a lot more hospitals around downtown Louisville to rotate through getting different flavors of medicine. So there is a tradeoff.

The bolded is interesting because I had the polar opposite feeling both at my interview and at pre-orientation for both schools.
BTW I'm still on both schools list at the moment so atleast one spot somewhere is going to free up for you all.

I knew I was forgetting something about UK...probably one of the most important things too! Thanks for adding that DrBowtie

I didn't have a bad experience at UK by far and they were very nice and professional. It may have helped that at Louisville I had a tour the day of my interview from a student who went to my undergrad. Congrats on both acceptances!

Yea, I work in a research lab affliated with the med school, and the walk from the parking lot to the campus can be intimidating. You can almost be sure that you will be solicited more than once a week by homeless people (and they do so in very clever ways sometimes). I think I'll make a visit to UK's campus sometime, and I start 2010, so the new establishments sound interesting.

This may be a bit late, but I used to live in Louisville and work on the medical school campus...so I thought I would put my two cents in..

Yes, you might be solicited by homeless people, but it isn't dangerous as long as you use common sense. I became friends with a lot of them over the course of working there...you will see some in the ER also. The homeless have the ability to sense fear and will hassle ya. Treat them like regular human beings and say a "good morning" or a "how are you" and they will stop bothering you for money. You can park right outside the school after 6 or 7. You can ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS call a campus police officer to DRIVE you to the parking lot...they are great and always willing.
That said, don't walk alone to the parking lot at night...that is just dumb to do anywhere.
Once again, common sense will keep ya safe.

I think someone mentioned it already, but when I went back to visit friends in Louisville, I saw some crazy progress on the "ghetto area" by campus. They are building a HUGE new research building and some really nice condos by campus that should "rejuvenate" the area a bit. Downtown Louisville is also going through a big change (the school is right outside the heart of downtown). They are building KY's first skyscraper, a new waterfront arena, and some really nice residential apts downtown.
Housing prices are low and if you have the resources and discipline, buying a house/condo here may not be a horrible idea...especially downtown...I think one will see great appreciation by 2010 or 2011.

There are other great housing options...some apartments near the "ghetto" (ghetto for rich white folk..lol). You can also live in the highlands if you are into a hip, bar, coffee shop, liberal scene..and it is close to school. Old Louisville is also nice.

I also used to live downtown and the walk to school (7-10 min) would be a great wake up for the morning. And you can take the bus for FREE if you don't feel like walking.

I have friends at U of L med and they seem to love it. They work hard, but one mentioned that they prepare you for the boards well. I think the average USMLE step 1 score is 225 there! Damn good!

Any other questions, and I will try to help from AZ...good luck.

I've heard the same thing from each UK/UofL med student I've talked to. Whichever school they chose was uber nice and accommodating while the other one was not. For my experience, UK was the nicer of the two and definitely seemed to care that I was applying (even though they ultimately rejected me). UofL doesn't seem too concerned with me and they aren't very helpful. That said, if they took me, I'd be ecstatic. I guess it's just the luck of the draw.

GUYS!!! It's officially the first week of May now!! AND the day of my LAST college final!!!!! =) =) =)

I'm refusing to check my status until Wednesday anyway.

Haha you sound like me - I'm refusing to check until someone on here says the rankings are up.

I'm quite confident Jared will check =)

Ha, yeah...you can pretty much count on that. I check every day pretty much. I bet we won't hear until next week though. How pissed will everyone be if they are running late?

Well how late can the possibly run? I mean, the May 15th deadline is a week from Tuesday, and I'm guessing they'll need to have their list done by then.

</cautious optimism>

Thank goodness I'll be distracted by beach week/graduation/moving home so I won't have much time to dwell on it until the 13th or so. Surely we'll know by then.

Does your school give you a couple days after finals are over to move out? NKU is ******ed and wants us out by 6:00pm the last day of finals. That gives me half a day to pack up and move out since I have finals through Friday. I think they should at least give us a few days.

That's crazy! No my school isn't like that at all. I live off campus so I can pretty much move out whenever I want, but even the on-campus kids have a few days after graduation to move out. Our graduation is a week after the last day of finals, so they couldn't expect us to move out before graduation anyways.

Well, in a few days both of you will be in my shoes: Nothing better to do than agonize over your waitlist spot. It's not so bad on the dark side though. Just a few more gray hairs is all...

A little late, but my perspective on the safety issue in Louisville:

Like someone above said, a ghetto for some maybe, but not really a ghetto. Hyde Park in South Chicago at night - that was a proper ghetto. But Louisville is a decently safe city with no more than the typical large city character.

That said, I'm living near 4th street Live come Summer, and I'll be riding my bike each day and night rain or shine.

The week we have all been waiting for is finally here...I am definitely feeling less confident than I have the past couple of months. There are three of us here at NKU that will be finding out our position on the wait list this week and I just have a bad feeling that they wouldn't put all three of us or maybe even two of us in the top third since we are all from NKU. One of the two applicants said she is going to turn down her offer and take a year off if she is accepted and then reapply to a D.O. school because she feels it is more for her...I wish she would have realized that before accepting an alternate list spot. Anyways, I wish you all the best of luck...this is what we have been waiting for (hopefully)!
