UOP 2009 application process

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
why does everyone wants to go to uop ? other than because its a 3 year accelerated program ??.... i went to uop open house one day.. and they said that last year, uop had the most applicants in the nation !!! really ?

Yeah, I declined Touro for pretty much what YiYaoYue said. As everyone will tell you, during an interview day you will be assessing the school just as much as they are you. The opinion of others will be different, but I left with a very negative impression of Touro after visiting. My stats are above average, and I feel I did well enough at other schools that I am willing to keep my $2k and risk waiting for elsewhere. It may seem bleek after getting 2 hold letters, but I'm confident I'll find a trickle of light at the end of the tunnel.

@ PharmDee09: Yeah, being deferred after interview means they want to see how the other interviewees do before they make their final decision on you. At the end you'll find out if you're accepted, waitlisted, or denied.

I felt the same vibe from Touro. I felt like the interviewers were trying to get you to mess and fall flat on your face instead of trying to get to know who you are, which is very different from Western's interview. Good luck to you.

For those who interviewed on Nov. 14th...anyone get an acceptance letter yet?

Settle in for the long haul. They told us it would be closer to Christmas. 🙂 The adcom meets twice a week, but there's Thanksgiving holiday, and then the students are going to have finals... but by Christmas, we should know!

For those of you accepted, would you mind telling me your statistics?

Also, could you guys tell me what UOP mainly looks for if they don't take PCAT? I'm really curious.

They look for hight and weight mainly.

they also look for people that can spell. height is spelled h-e-i-g-h-t

Lol. There is a difference between a typo and not knowing how to spell.

But they also refuse to accept tools, so looks like you're out.

the poster cjf asked a question about what UOP looked for (if they don't consider PCAT scores)... if you don't have an answer, then don't reply. height and weight -- to me, that's a condescending and arrogant answer. check yourself before you call someone else a tool, tool.

After careful checking of myself I have come to this conclusion: my sarcasm with the height and weight comment was fostered from the sillyness (if you will) of the question. What do they mainly look for if it's not pcat? How about EVERYTHING you submit? Since when does a school not look at the applicant as a whole? If you won't accept that, then how about gpa? I hope that better answers the question and we can put this very important dilemma to rest.

LOL that's really funny.

Crazy4eck: lighten up. Calisoca was merely making a joke and I thought it was funny since I got the weight down and also the height

Hey, did you guys hear about the recent shooting at UOP. One beautiful Vietnamese student was shot leaving her husband and 2 young kids. They said the murderer shot himself after being chased by the police. How sad

surely, that is a critical detail of the story.

anyway, i think a uop student was shot during a home invasion robbery....it wasnt even in stockton...it was in san mateo.

You're right. It was not near campus at all.

so I assume tier 3 invites haven't gone out yet. Do these go out starting Dec?

Submitted my payment and everything online yesterday. I'm waiting to see what happens with other schools before I make my final call. 🙂

Different schools put different weight on different criteria. Some are really big on scores, some are big on GPA, etc.

But thanks for the help...even though your post was useless.

Oh you're absolutely welcome. Hope you find out what UOP is 'big on'...as if you could alter anything at this point anyway to cater to it.

Anybody who interviewed on Nov 14 hear back from UOP yet? Do you know when we should expect emails/letters from them?

I'm waiting too. It seems that people from earlier interview dates were notified 4 or 5 weeks after their date. It hasn't even been 3 weeks for us. But who knows....they said they'd tell us before Christmas

Just got my acceptance letter/email. 🙂 I interviewed in Hawaii (Oct 27) but they lumped my final application with the Nov 14 interviews. For those waiting I wish you all good luck!

I got my acceptance email right now!! so happy! I interviewed on Nov 14 . good luck u guys!

I got my acceptance email! 😍
If anyone needs help with their upcoming interview, I'll be happy to give pointers. PM me.

For those who got their acceptance letters, congrats!

I'll be seeing you next year, but I'll be a 2nd year.

🙂

Do interview invites go out 3-4 weeks before your interview date? If the next interview sessions is in January, would it go out around now? thanks

Is there any notification prior to that?

My pchk 11/17.. (my last letter of rec came in really late after i turned in my apps)

I was in the pre-pharmacy program at UOP, and was supposed to start pharmacy school this Fall. However, my grades slipped last semester and so I lost my spot. Now I am applying as an "outside" student, as well as applying to other schools. I have already done the interview and writing sample - like others have said, it is very relaxed. The interviewers really want to see how well you can carry a conversation. The writing sample is just to check how well you can write. It's not that hard. They ask the general questions (ie: why do you want to be a pharmacist, describe a difficult time you had at work/school, etc).

I live in Stockton, and am a UOP alumni. Although the school, overall, is pretty good, and the three year program is enticing, I honestly cannot say there is that much more there. The class size is very large, at about 200 students entering a year (100 pre-pharms and 100 transfers). There isn't much to do in Stockton, but the good thing is when you're in pharm school you don't have time for much of anything else!

I also lived in the "pharmacy apartments", located right next to the school. They are pretty nice: set up in suite style, with four bedrooms split into two wings, each with their own bathroom, and then a shared kitchen and living room. Its expensive, and much much cheaper to live off campus, but if you want the convenience of leaving your apartment 3 minutes before class, then its great! Also, with a housing contract, they make you purchase the minimum meal plan, which in my opinion is very irritating ($1600, money doesn't roll over...).

question: I just now looked at the pharmacy application tracker on the website (i had no idea that it was there... ) - it says that I don't have an application submitted, even though I got a letter from UOP saying they received my supplemental app. Does anyone know what that means... or what I should do?

Good luck to all of you!

koercive - I received the interview invite in September and my interview was in November, although they did give me the choice of interviewing in October. Invites for January should be going out around now. That is, if they haven't been sent out already. No, I didn't receive prior notification before that.

kxydo798 - Maybe Pharmcas hasn't forwarded your application to UOP. When did you submit your application?

:luck: Good Luck!

Does anybody know for sure they're going to UOP??I'm having a hard time deciding between UOP and USC. Right now I'm leaning more towards UOP because at the interview everyone was soo nice and friendly, but USC has its own perks too. Any advice??

If I am lucky enough to get into USC, I will be making the same decision (I would consider UCSD if I get in there too). I have it boiled down like this:

- USC seems much more enjoyable, in a more high-profile area, program seems high-powered with a lot of opportunities (not that UOP's is bad, but it seems more tied in with some big things in So Cal).
- UOP is one year less and I would probably have $75k less of loans coming out of there compared to USC. I'd have to sit and calculate the costs and everything but man...that's a pretty penny on the loan repayments.

USC is an awesome school...but UOP is a very good option and probably a more practical one for most people. That's the way I see it. It would still be a tough call for me. Sleep on it.

So, someone told me that tuition for UOP is the same (more or less) than a 4 year school. UOP charges more per year to make up for the non-existent 4th year. I dont know whether this is true. Perhaps a UOP student can shed some light on this.

Wow, thanks for your input. I didn't realize that UOP actually costs less than USC. It does seem more practical to go there w/ the accelerated program and the cheaper loan. I will definitely sleep on that. Btw, my bf lives in Fresno too. If i go to uop then i'd be much closer to him than from LA..not that I should let that influence my choice but it's definitely a plus🙂

^UOP: $50k 1st year, $50k 2nd year, $32k 3rd year = $132k

http://www.usc.edu/schools/pharmacy/pharmd/admission/tuition.html
^USC: Roughly $40k per year x 4 years = $160k

So there is about a 30k difference in raw tuition. Plus you have a year less of living expenses, and cheaper ones at that.

The public schools are a lot cheaper tuition-wise (I think $25k/year or so) but the living costs in SF or SD are both ungodly.

Hmm, well, you're not bad off either way. UOP is about a 2 hour drive, USC is about a 3-3.5 hour drive. You could pull a day trip to either one if need be.

I would ask if you can sit in on the classes for both schools and do that. I would if I had trouble deciding and both are driving distance. You will know more about a school if you sit in then by your inclination of how good classes are based on your interviewer.

Honestly speaking, I think sitting through both their classes will make or break your decision.

Congrats to all who were recently accepted. Did anyone from the 11/21 interview hear anything yet? I'm guessing since the 11/15 acceptances were so recent, maybe this coming week will be when I can expect to hear back. Are rejections via email too?

living in SD is not ungodly...10 mins away from ucsd there is housing for single room ranging from 450 to 600.....that is not expensive.

From what I know, they email acceptances through email. On-holds are sent via snail mail. I'm from the 11/14 interview and got my acceptance email on Wed. 12/3...so I think acceptances from the 11/21 interview should go out tomorrow...Don't quote me on that though. Good luck to you!

I think you also have to add in the fact that because you get out 1 year earlier from UOP, you can start work a year earlier and pay off your loans faster. Of course the UC's are ideal in tuition. If I'm lucky enough to be one of UCSD's 60 students then i'd go there for sure.

Good to know. All I hear about is how beautiful La Jolla is and how expensive everything is, but if there's good, cheap housing available, I'd be interested.

$450-600 for a single room is rather cheap! I paid $650 for the living room while I was at UCSD. But then again, I stayed at the Costa Verde complex, so maybe that's why it's higher.

What are you guys doing for the ones on-hold? It's a long wait =/
Congrats to those who got in =)

You mean on hold without an interview yet right? I guess I have to wait until late January and just hope for the best. Sigh...

I meant post-interview. Although the deferral letter didn't feel so good either. Don't worry, there's still many chances for interview invites =)

Anyone having problems with confirming your acceptance online? I can do everything up until the orientation webpage which then gives me a page that says "error."

I had a heck of a time doing the confirmation. I found that exiting the browser and restarting from scratch would reset the form. Then I could get to the end without getting an "error" message.

Be careful though. The first time I went through it only charged me $200. I wasn't sure if something changed or if there were more steps to follow so I clicked ok. I ended up going back and getting charged again for the correct $575. After talking to them they've credited me for BOTH transactions. Now I'm trying to get them to charge me for the correct amount. HEADACHE!!

I think they've realized there's a problem because when I log into my InsidePacific account nothing appears except for my name. No tabs, news, or anything.
