I really got lucky this round and now I am torn.

UOP + Military scholarship.......

3 years of hell + 4 years of military service(which I think I would enjoy)= debt-free dentist.

OR:

UT-San Antonio + scholarship and parental $$$$.........

4 years of hell= debt-free dentist

San Antonio for sure. 4 years of military commitment? NO THANK YOU. As fun as that would be, I would rather graduate debt free and start working in private practice without the constraints of military life.

Unless you just LOVE the military. Or want to make it a career. Some people are like that. I'm not. I've heard stories that it's not all peachy as the recruiters make it out to be.

Go to UoP so I have a better chance of getting in at SA.

Also remember you still have 4 more years of reserves after active duty

It depends on which branch you join...I grew up in the military (My dad's an AF pilot) and am applying for an AF HPSP scholarship, and can't wait to hopefully join. With the military you get GREAT opportunities at specialties, and you have a guaranteed job. You also get to move all around the country and travel to some great countries as well. You can look at it as a commitment or a job, because just like a private practice, you'll be working 8-5, but you get 30 guaranteed days of leave (days off) plus great health insurance...best experience I could've ever had as a kid was growing up in the military. I guess it depends on if your parents are going to be OK with helping you through school, but I think the military is a great option if you're considering it!

Great opportunities at specialty? Agreed

Guaranteed job? Yes, but at a lower pay rate then if you were going into private practice. But you also get a lot of benefits and other super nice perks such as days off/health insurance/retirement/etc.

Moving around the country? It might have been fun as a kid but I would think it's a big headache for an adult if you had to change addresses all the time. And you might go out of the country too. Which could be a pro/con depending on who you are. You also might not get much of a say in where you go so you could end up in some random base in the middle of nowhere. If you have a significant other, this could also be a HUGE problem.

So moral of the story? There's pluses and minuses to everything. I still think San Antonio without the military is the way to go. But just make sure you talk to a couple of AF/Army/Navy dentists before you commit and don't just talk to recruiters because they aren't doctors.

Yeah, I'm getting married before starting dental school, so it wasn't fair to her for me to do the military. If I was single, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Hands down go to Texas, UoP is a sweet school but the cost of attendance makes San Antonio way better. It looks like from the way you posted your debating over that extra year of dental school at San Antonio. Trust me that extra year is way way way shorter than the extra 8 after UoP (4 active and 4 reserve). Save your money and your soul and go to San Antonio.

I think your opportunity to get out of school debt-free is fantastic. I would agree with San Antonio. You get out debt-free plus you have choices afterward. Like AKGopher said, if you want to go into military as a career, do it, but I would say that otherwise you are better off making your own decision after UT-SA. It's a great school, and you get out debt-free with freedom to choose what you want to do afterward.

Which scholarship would you be getting at UT-SA?

Do you even know if you got the military scholarship yet? I'm in the same boat: UTSA for free (w/ GI Bill) or Tufts with AF scholarship, bu I have no clue if I'll actually get the scholarship. Sucks that I won't hear from the air force until end of February but deposits are due 1 Jan...

I do not have anything in writing from the Navy. So, obviously, this would change the equation if the Navy doesn't deliver. The recruiter has got me pretty optimistic.

I don't know what it is called........I got an email after my acceptance from the Dean.

ETA......Dean's Scholarship
