So... I figured it was time to update all of my vet forum friends whether you want to hear it or not 🙂 I ain't gonna lie, it's been a looong road since I came back from Edinburgh in the Spring and made my announcement that I was leaving vet school permanently. I have to say that it was a very tough adjustment in that I knew I wanted to be back in school asap, but it was impossible to get things done in the timeframe I wanted. I finally resigned myself to the fact it was just going to take some time to get where I wanted and since then I've been more at peace. I took a deep breath and painstakingly planned out my approach. I knew I was heading towards human med and initially thought nurse practitioner - it would be quick and is a decent and respectable career. Med school was in the back of my mind, but I couldn't initially get past the 7 - 9 year commitment.
I kept plugging along and finally got a volunteer position at a great hospital (the process is harder than getting a job!) and started volunteering a LOT. I took a summer course and started my research. I shadowed a D.O and a DPM (podiatrist). I asked lots of professionals lots of questions and observed everything. I was a sponge and a woman on a mission. Over the course of several months, it became crystal clear to me...I still wanted to be a doctor and nursing was not going to cut it. I had considered podiatry many years ago and loved my recent shadowing experience. I saw so many interesting cases and loved all that it entailed. Yes, I have found my passion again! I was interested in equine sports medicine and have been an athlete my entire life, so podiatry makes perfect sense to me. I've twisted ankles a gazillion times, torn ligaments and had a ruptured plantar fascia that ended my kickboxing/mma career. Podiatry it is 😍
I applied this cycle to 7 of the 9 podiatry schools. I have received 3 interview invites and have been accepted to 2 schools with 1 interview pending!! One school takes the GRE and I'm fully accepted, but all others require the MCAT, for which I'm sitting at the end of January.
Some schools will not even offer to interview until they have scores, but I'm very happy with my acceptances at this point.
That's the skinny of it. Podiatry school is 4 years, followed by a 3 year surgical residency. The possibilities are endless with this gem of a profession and I'm super excited. So, starting next August, I'll be a first year again 🙄 and will graduate 1 year after I would have from Edinburgh.
It's been a stressful, yet incredibly reflective year. A lot has happened and I feel so fortunate for all of it. I actually would not change a thing.....it all happened as it should have and I am better for it. The hard work is paying off and I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
So, to all of you grinding through vet school or anxiously awaiting interview invites....enjoy the journey. There's no sense in wishing away the time, because there is so much to be learned along the way.
That's all for now. The MCAT will most likely give me a swift kick in the rear, but I will go down swinging
Miss y'all and will be on here more to 'catch up'. 😀
