Update letters?

Do update letters work? Are they still used even though all the schools usually say they don't want them? Is someone who doesn't send one at a disadvantage? Basically am I missing something here that's actually beneficial about update letters?

you don't need to send them unless you have something truly outstanding such as a publication, etc

nobody cares that you shadowed another physician and really liked it.
nobody cares that you got a puppy and have since then picked up jogging as a hobby with your dog.
nobody cares that you volunteer at the zoo now

Thanks I personally would not send one but I did get two new publications and a new job as a clinical investigation supervisor, I'm waiting for my mcat retake results before I even consider sending one, it still doesn't feel right to send one even then and it feels desperate prob won't send one..

I think 2 publications are significant enough to warrant an update

So some schools give you online space in their secondary to add information but some don't and say they are not open to it. I'd definitely add to the ones that provide the space but not sure about others
