Move wont all be in place till 2009.
1st class to start in Grand Rapids will be class of 2010.(Fall 2007)
2nd yrs will be there in 2006?so this will affect incoming class of 2005
MSU CHM move will affect MSU COM(Osteopathic) schl, who will increase in size from 145 to 225.

I actually like the plan, there looks like they are bringin more money=more opportunity=more resources. They are ready to pump $$$, and I'm excited looking at the plan.

I still get to spend my 1st and 2nd yr at MSU main campus, though its nothin new, spent last 7yrs here

I thought that seemed funny too. In 2006 2nd-years head to GR, while 1st-years go to E. Lansing. Then in 2007 Everyone is in GR...

Why not send the 1st-years to GR in 2006 and leave the 2nd-years in E. Lansing?

cause 1st yr is mostly Basic science, 2nd yr is PBL(problem based learning--clinical), Basic science faculty wont be in place till 2007, gives them time to get everything set up. Facilities and all.

The Van Andel and DeVos family have millions of $$ to burn and MSU isnt turning back.
Check out what they call "Healthcare Hill" or "Medical Mile" in Grand Rapids, where MSU is moving to.
Its made up of:
1)Van Andel Research Institute http://www.vai.org/vari/
Focus: Basic science institute with an initial focus on cancer research.

Opened: 2000

Location: Downtown Grand Rapids, about 70 miles west of Lansing

Size: $60 million, seven-story building on a nearly 3-acre site. Houses 19 laboratories and 200 scientists

Money: $70.2 million in assets; brought in $20 million in 2001. Spent $18 million and has $43 million in liabilities.

Research and discoveries
Pinpointed several genes that help predict the recurrence of colon cancer

Uncovered two proteins that trigger the spread of cancerous tumors

Launched a tumor tissue donation campaign to further cancer research

Started clinical trials to test a new treatment for pancreatic cancer

Teamed with the local children's hospital to train a new generation of pediatric oncologists.

Source: Van Andel Research Institute

2)Spectrum Healthsystem (28th largest in country, with a children's hospital)Ranked #13 in country in 2004

How much do you think this will effect MSU CHM's "reputation"? I've heard that research limitations were the main thing holding the school back from being considered one of the "more elite" schools.

It cant help but increase their reputation. The Grand Rapids medical area is 3rd largest in Midwest in funding/grants after Ann Arbor(U of M) and Mayo.
Van Andel is big time in cancer research, Spectrum has 9 hospitals, including children.
This will be a medical academic center, there are buildings/developers ready, the med schl will be right in the middle of everything. At first I wasnt too happy with the move, but the more i read about it, and better understand it, the more I feel its definitely necessary. Its definitely a much needed expansion, they are going to start recruiting new faculty this summer for the new divisions/depts.
