So, here's a POWER-related question; maybe someone from FL or AZ could answer...

Is Walgreens hiring new-grads and sending them right to the CPO, or are they making them work in an actual store first?

Most of the mail-order companies won't hire fresh-outs, instead preferring applicants to have at least 1-2 years of retail experience. Presumably, this is so that they have a chance to put theory into practice, and learn to function as an RPh.

It would seem that by placing new grads in the CPO immediately, and just having them click-click-click through verification screens, patient care would be negatively impacted.

I was told by the district manager that we do not expect POWER to be rolled our state for at least a few years because they are still "perfecting it."

I am glad that I work for a company that is trying new ideas, but I just don't think POWER will work out favorably in the end.

Yup...they can "perfect" it next year and boom... POWER arrives at your state. Especially, if your pharmacy state board is dumb-folded and your state has no labor protection law.

Walgreens announces executive change

Oct. 2, 2009 - Walgreens today announced George J. Riedl, senior vice president of pharmacy innovation and purchasing, will leave the company at the end of the year.

Since March, Riedl has overseen the rollout of a new pharmacy system in Florida and Arizona that centralizes administrative tasks and provides store pharmacists more time for patient counseling and other clinical services. With rollout of the system complete in Florida and nearing full implementation in Arizona, Riedl will finalize his transition from the company over the coming months.

“With the confidence I have in the direction of the company’s pharmacy operations and in Walgreens future as a whole, this is the right time for me to move on to other opportunities,” said Riedl. “I look forward to the challenges that lay ahead.”

Walgreens President and CEO Greg Wasson said, “During his 27 years with Walgreens, George has played a key role in several areas, including marketing, merchandising, purchasing and pharmacy services. We appreciate all he has done for the company during that time and for his willingness to stay on during this transition period. George’s outstanding leadership skills in developing and motivating staff will benefit our company for years to come. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Walgreens (www.walgreens.com) is the nation’s largest drugstore chain with fiscal 2009 sales of $63.3 billion. The company operates 7,045 drugstores in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Walgreens provides the most convenient access to consumer goods and services and cost-effective pharmacy, health and wellness services in America through its retail drugstores, Walgreens Health Services division and Walgreens Health and Wellness division. Walgreens Health Services assists pharmacy patients and prescription drug and medical plans through Walgreens Health Initiatives Inc. (a pharmacy benefit manager), Walgreens Mail Service Inc., Walgreens Home Care Inc., Walgreens Specialty Pharmacy LLC and SeniorMed LLC (a pharmacy provider to long-term care facilities). Walgreens Health and Wellness Division includes Take Care Health Systems, the largest and most comprehensive manager of worksite health and wellness centers and in-store convenient care clinics, with more than 700 locations throughout the country.

Ughhhh, POWER, not a real popular topic. I currently work in CT and last I heard we would be one of the last markets to get POWER, if we do indeed get it. Luckily I don't think the CT or NY boards are too hot on the idea.

I just find this whole situation funny. The whole time that I was interviewing for my tech job, the manger was preaching about how much they value customer care. They have wierd mottos proclaiming everything about the customer. Customer care this, customer care that. It just amuses me that a company whose existence is based "solely on making the customer feel valued" is taking a step backwards. Good thing I don't plan on staying at Wags when i get my Pharm D.

POWER has been "suspended indefinitely", according to one local RX Supe. It may be partially due to the resignation of Reidl. Nonetheless, they are still moving terminals around and doing the "POWER reset" in local stores here....

I work for walgreens in the south ft. lauderdale district in FL. They aren't hiring much right now, but you certainly have a choice on whether you want to go CPO or work in stores. CPO has its downsides though as you have to meet a quota on reviews per hour, and currently it's very high. Not as leisurely as you may think. They don't have to deal with the stress of a high volume store and problematic situations, but staring at a screen all day is no bargain either.

Strange how Reidl "resigned" before he could witness his revolutionary change of the pharmacy world and bask in the glory of his "success."

My supervisor has told us that there have been set backs with the program. He does not know its current status.

Does the word FUBAR come to mind?

My father works for MOOG (if anyone's heard of that). They work directly with Nasa, Boeing, and companies of that ilk. Obviously, the standards for the products the company puts out must be very high. When I told him and a few other co-workers about POWER, they all had the same basic reaction. It's a QC nightmare just waiting to happen. Hopefully Walgreen's realizes that before it does happen.
