Accepted! Hells yeah!!!! Did anyone else realize that Penn Preview is at the same time as HMS Second Look and Stanford?

In here too. I was dreading they'd all be on the same weekend. Talk about multitasking --> Harvard, Yale, Stanford, UPenn second looks + biology midterm + research poster presentation. I'm excited, but seriously, what are you going to do?

Anybody want to take bets on the exact release time? (virtual bets with virtual winnings of course). Whoever posts first (with proof) and is part of the pot gets the virtual winnings. Give bet amount and day. Quote and add yourself 😀.

Durfen: $5 (Tuesday)
dottore07: $5 (Monday - 3pm if we bet on exact times)

Pot Size: $10

You win dottore. Here's $10.

Man you got it good!

Thanks durfen! But to clarify, Stanford gave me a swift kick in the shins by rejecting me ~3 wks after I interviewed. It's Zippership who is holding Stanford as well.

someone should create a poll thread asking people to vote the following.... but i'm not sure whether to create that last category or not.

Acceptance
Tier1- preview invite
Tier1- "very strong interest"
Tier1- no fancy message
Tier2
Rejection (if invited for interview- though im not sure if this exists)

Got the same from the mstp heh, still to interview for MD.

Looks like Penn is up to its old tricks. I got two emails today from the admissions committee to remind me that its 2007 admissions decisions were out. I wasn't really torn up about it since (1) I didn't apply this cycle and (2) I'm already an MSI at another med school. lol Penn did the same thing ~5 yrs back to me when I withdrew my app from their undergrad after being accepted early elsewhere -- they had to prop up their US News rankings by adding me as an additional rejection.

wow....congrats. do they tell you about the scholarship on the status page?

thanks peezyweezy! yes, it was on the status page (which i've since refreshed about 10000000 times just to make sure i'm not dreaming), and i also just got an email from ms. sheffler. best of luck to all of you, i'll be at penn next year!

So has everyone gotten an email telling them to check their status? I know mine but still haven't gotten an email (no scholarship listed on the page - of well, I'm just psyched to be accepted).

Did everyone get this message after pressingthe Explore button?

Choose Penn

The Committee on Admissions appreciates your interest in Penn Med. Our current classes contain many outstanding students accepted from the waitlist and we wouldn't know what to do without them. You may be one of those students. Be sure to let us know of your continuing interest in Penn by completing the Wait List Response Form.

We know that this is an exciting time for you and that you have many choices and decisions to make. We wish you the very best and know that we will be seeing some of you here at Penn in the fall.

Wow, how nice that their rejection status is in big red font!

I got the same message in the "explore" window, and I got the "good" message about being at the very front or whatever of the tier 1 waitlist, but I did NOT get a preview invitation.

I have this message too. I suspect everyone does since I have the lackluster description for the tier 1 waitlist status. Sigh... So is it pretty much hopeless then? No enthusiastic wording and no Penn Preview invite, but still tier 1...

The thing that bugs me the most about Penn is that ugly dophin. I mean WTF... couldn't they come up with something better than that? Really... it's the ivy league man.... I expect more. 😉

Tier 1 Waitlist...

I have no idea how good of a thing this is.

I've been too worried and depressed to check, but I got in. I'm just a little weirded out, because I was waitlisted at Columbia, Cornell, WashU and NYU, rejected at Harvard, and haven't heard anything from Yale...

So have all the acepted students gotten an email reminder to check? I still haven't gotten mine. Maybe because I registered for Penn Preview so quickly (I got an email confirming registration for that). Speaking of which anyone know if there wil be any travel reimburesement?

No I still haven't gotten the status page has been updated email! Strangely enough, it seems to have been sent out to people who didn't interview.

So basically, this is just a lie??

Can I find out my ranking on the waitlist?

There is no rank on the waitlist. The committee has divided the waitlist into two tiers. Candidates have been notified of their tier placement to facilitate students' planning processes.

There must be a ranked waitlist if there is any order to their calling people up for admissions. I think they just don't want a bunch of people calling with questions about their rank. They must have some sort of system to call people up and offer an admissions spot off the waitlist.

Yeah, I get that part. I just don't understand why they would put everyone into Tier 1, with 3 different ranked messages. And then tell us there are two tiers, designated by the number on our status page.

Ahh! I am shocked, I really didn't think I would get in!😀

Hang in there if you are on the waitlist -- I heard it moves a lot, and I'll be cheering for you fellow SDNers! :luck:

I agree with you bebabul01, it does not make much sense. I wonder if anyone really knows what is going on.

Tier 1 waitlist. I can't wait till the waitlists start moving in May! Good luck to the rest of you.

honestly, ive given up hope for all this crap. not just penn, but for any waitlist.

all its going to be is another friggin disappointment.

So when do we find out when we made it off the waitlist or not?? And what if we have to notify another school we got in if we are planning on going or not by May 15th? How does all of this work??

What does this Tier 1 + Penn Preview thing actually mean?

Was this done last year?

What does this Tier 1 + Penn Preview thing actually mean?

Was this done last year?

Yes it was done last year. It means you're on the waitlist but you're high enough up that they feel comfortable inviting you to second look because there's a real good chance you'll come off the waitlist.

Not to be completely obsessive (I swear I'm not normally like this), but I would imagine that the number of people who got Tier 1 + Penn Preview must be very small. Neuronix, please correct me if I'm wrong. After all, the Penn adcom would probably want to err on the side of caution and be very conservative in its numbers to avoid generating false hope for those waitlisters who are invited to and attend the revisit weekend, only to find out later that due to a higher-than-expected yield, there are no slots for them after all. Hence, I think that there is still some hope for those with the "strong interest" message but no Penn Preview invite. But maybe that's just my natural optimism shining through.

It depends on the year. I remember a guy who stayed with me for second look who was top of tier 1 and was invited to second look. He never got in.

The waitlist moves different amounts each year. I think the admissions department also plays around with how many acceptances they give out and waitlist spots in which tier they give out... But being a student who's only peripherally involved with admissions I don't have any numbers or any definite info for you all.

Hi guys. I am a current MS1 at Penn. If you are waitlisted and invited to Penn Preview, call/email Gaye and talk to her. She will likely be able to give you a better idea of where you stand. From my experience, everyone last year who was invited to Preview got in; some of them actually received official acceptances at Preview. If you go to Preview, Gaye will meet with you individually to discuss your situation. I also know that some "exciting time" but not Preview-invited applicants got in last year as well, one as late as a week or so before classes started.

Congrats to anyone who was accepted. Penn Med is amazing in my opinion, and I can't imagine a better place to be. I love it here.

I guess the title says it all. I've got the tier 1 designation, but no Penn Preview invite, and no "exciting time" early consideration optimistic wording on my status page. Is this basically equivalent to a rejection? If so I'll be disappointed because I really loved Penn, but I do have other offers, so if that's what it is, then I'd rather go forward with those and put the uncertainty behind me. So please be honest, does plain old tier 1 = rejection?

Can't answer you for sure, but anecdotally I don't know anyone who got in without the "exciting time" message or a Preview invite. My best guess is that generic Tier 1 people will not get off the waitlist...but I guess never say never. Call/email admissions if you want an "official" answer.

Apparently I missed all the craziness this morning. Tier 1 waitlist without any special message here.

Though it was disappointing, at least this process is done.

I'm currently a PennMed third year student. I will tell you that I was waitlisted without an invitation to Penn Preview, while I was accepted to WashU. I wrote to Ms. Sheffler, the director of admissions, and told her I wanted to come back to Penn to meet with her and reexpress my interest in Penn. I flew from my midwest home back to Philly to meet her for a day. After some discussion in her office she gave me an acceptance letter on the spot.
It's important to be persistent in what you want. Be articulate in why you want Penn so badly, and why some other school will not do, especially if you have other acceptances or waitlist options. If you don't have a good answer to that question, you may want to reconsider why you are fighting for Penn specifically.
I remember being asked whether or not I would matriculate at Penn if accepted. You must be honest in your answer, but I can assure you, Penn is the best decision I ever made. Simply a stunning program, and so much fun. Top rate.

Rumor has it that 35-40 students were pulled from the waitlist for last year's entering class. Here's to keeping hope!

my student-host told me it was less than 20, and that its been going down year after year... but he wasn't positive

How does this waitlist work and when will we know by?

Check the FAQs. There's a link below the big bold letters on your status page.

Just got an email telling me to check my status. In case anybody didn't get that memo....
