Upenn Update

I was just wondering if anyone has been rejected from UPENN. I have now recieved the below message twice:

The Committee on Admissions reviewed your application but has deferred an interview decision. Additional reviews will occur between now and March 2007 to see if your status changes within our applicant pool.

ALL ADMISSIONS DECISIONS WILL BE ANNOUNCED THE WEEK OF MARCH 19.


I was wondering if that basically was a rejection or what. Anyone with some input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Did you receive it twice today, or once today and once say, a month ago? (I haven't received anything from them so I can't really comment on what it means). Perhaps they are letting you know each time the committee actually meets and postpones making a decision re: interview?

You don't really "receive" it. It's on the status page.

My page changed a few months ago, changed back, and now it's "deferred" again.
 
Got it for the 2nd time as well... The first time was in Sept. sometime.

Got it--don't worry I've been checking the status page too every once in a while too...not too often. Not more than once an hour (kidding....kind of)
 
I got the same message (for the first time). I think it's a kiss off. Unfortunately you can't search for rejected current apps on mdapplicants but I scrolled through those whom I thought were the most likely rejected but found nothing. That doesn't prove anything but gives weight to the delayed rejection line of reasoning.

Unfortunately, I'd tend to agree. The first time I applied, I received such a message, and, well, I don't think they continued to review my file. I also do not recall any of my friends being plucked off this list either, but it is entirely possible that they just were not one of the lucky few whose status eventually changed upon further examination.

Me too. Not a great shock.
The first time I got it, I did an mdapps search for people deferred by UPenn. None were eventually admitted to UPenn, but all were eventually admitted somewhere, including some very competitive places. Take the good with the bad.
 
I guess no news...is good news...my status has been static since I was complete (in August)....oh well...it snows over there 😡

I know, right? I wish I knew what was going on over there. I'm also half annoyed that I switched programs... if I hadn't, who knows... I might know (one way or the other) by now.

Yeah I got that message too...well I guess its better to know than to keep wondering and waiting...
 
just checked my status page and I got the same interview decision deferred message.

its not snowing in rochester, so happy, i can still wear saddles. *jumps up and down, okay its cold, going back inside, *sigh

I've been complete at upenn since 9/13, but i don't have that message on my status page.

Instead I have...

Your application is now in the screening process. Complete applications will go through a series of competitive screenings. Interviews will begin in October and continue into March, 2007. Applicants invited for interviews will be notified via email. The Committee on Admissions will make all final decisions in March, 2007.

so have they not reviewed me yet i guess?
When were u guys complete?
how long does it take them?
 
lol maybe maybe 2 weeks ago? haha i was really lazy and kind of busy, 80 pages of thesis doesn't write themselves.

now time to play wow, and if i don't get in at least i will have a high level wow character
 
after being complete 6 weeks. How long from the time of completion are most people getting this deferred interview notice?
 
I spoke with some of the admissions people ~3.5 weeks after I resubmitted my primary and was complete and everything, and by that point in time they still had not reviewed my file. I think it takes quite awhile for some of us. 😕
 
I've been complete since August and received the deferred update today. Sucks.

I just got it today, and I've been complete since LATE August. Yesterday, my status was still the other one.
 
Yeah i got that message sometime in sept maybe too and then went back and now has AGAIN been deffered. From what everyone has said on this thread...it seems as that they do not reject anyone for some time but basically this is their way of doing it...by continuosly "deffering" you. Let me know if you guys come up with anything else.

Same here, except my last letter of recommendation didn't get in until 10/30. =(
After reading the posts above, I conclude that they will take their sweet time in rejecting me😡

sounds like another "hold" situation....
but maybe worse!

I wouldn't worry if this is the message on your page. I was complete at UPenn around 8/15 and that was the message on my status page for almost 2 months before they invited me to interview.
 
I spoke to the admissions office the other day, she said that the deferred message (not the screening one that jojo1981 was referring to) meant that you didn't get an invite from the initial review, but they do offer some invites from Nov-March to people who had been deferred initially. I got the impression that they were very few and far between though, especially given the number of people who got deferred, so I'm counting Penn in my "rejection" pile.

Yep guys, this pretty much means a rejection. Oh well, I guess I going go be a dentist now.

If it went back again, does that mean that it was under screening for a second time, or are they just playing games?
 
I too have the rejection/hold message...oh well
 
I didn't get my invite until late October and had been complete at Penn since August. They're not a rolling school so I don't think we'll hear back from them (rejection or otherwise) until March 5th, as their website says.
 
no change...still getting the "under review" message.

So...yes...it will be a while! 😡
 
I guess that's it for the Penn State...I mean...UPenn School of Medicine. I wish that they would be more upfront, though, about what this actually means-de facto rejection or that the file will actually get looked again later.

LOL!!!! Yeah...that is how I'm feeling....but I'm not too much in love with Philly...so I can handle the silence...who needs them anyway? 🙂
 
I called admissions today, and they looked up my file and said that the message means that my file definitely will be looked at again at some point. Take that for what it's worth, I guess.
 
But have they actually rejected anyone? If not, I'm taking this as a rejection.
 
When I asked about what deferral means, she had to look up my file, before emphasizing that the message means that my file will be looked at again. Dunno if that means that all or only some will be looked at again. Perhaps she was bluffing. Who knows.
 
Add me to the deferred interview decision! Hurray!

(complete end of Sep for anyone who was wondering)
 
FYI.

My status has changed from complete, to deferred, back to complete, and then back again to deferred... So it does appear that they reconsider your application. The bigger question is, how many times are you deferred before you're rejected.

The silly thing for me is that I would decline the interview invite even if I got it, so why do I care?
 
what confounds me is what they're doing for the people whose status pages haven't changed at all. i've been complete since end of july/early august and haven't heard a peep nor has my status page changed. my application has more likely than not been seen, but why hasn't my status been changed to deferred (i check status pages pretty regularly)? is the lack of updating a sign of a delayed rejection? why does this process have to be so confusing!?!

are you sure that your first change wasnt part of the mass glitch they had where they changed a bunch of people's status to deferred and then corrected it back to complete?

I would take that as a good sign. They probably have your application on the side and consider you more likely to get an interview than those who have been officially deferred. What you could do is call and express your concern and maybe someone in the office will let you know where you stand.
