Upon graduating from a D.O med school, if a student decides to do a D.O residency, for example in IM, would it be, or is it possible then to do an M.D fellowship? say in cardiology or oncology.... And how about the other way around... if a D.O student does an M.D residency, can they come back and do a D.O fellowship?? how easy or hard is it to do one of these scenarios....

thanks!!

It probably depends on the fellowship. I know a DO who was the first to complete a traditionally allopathic fellowship...so from my knowlege (not official) I would say yes it is possible

Here's the deal...

A DO technically can do an osteopathic residency & then apply for & complete an allopathic fellowship. Here's the catch...if you have not first completed an allopathic or dually accredited residency, you CANNOT be 'boarded' in the specialty that you just completed the fellowship in.

Both Cards & Onc are IM subspecialties. There are tons of IM residencies that never fill up so you are better off to do residency at an allopathic institution b/c (let's face it) what's the point if you can't be boarded in your specialty??

Cards & Onc are both considered competitive fellowships whether you are applying to osteo- or allo-pathic fellowships. Hope this all makes sense. Let me know if it doesn't.

I was wondering about that too, thanks for posting this question.

plannin on an allo resid and allo fellowship ... may even do an osteo fellowship in OMM for kicks.

thanks, that makes sense...so i guess its best to stick with one path... either allo or osteo.... doing one and then the other just complicates things...i was looking at orthopoedic surgery, and a fellowship doing surgery on the spinal cord.... well their are only 2 spots in the entire country for a D.O fellowship ( i think both in california), so then i started wondering... since its going to be really really hard to match ortho. in an M.D residency.... would another route be doing a D.O residency in ortho. and then applying for M.D fellowships....but i guess that will be problematic....
