Trying to figure out which upper level class to take this semester that would help in terms of MCAT and med school app wise. Any thought on immunology and molecular biology? These are the only two classes I'm looking at. I have already signed up for biochem. Thanks.

I would say molecular would be of more help than immunology - the quantity of material/yield is going to be much greater. The both will help long run - but as a molecular/cellular major, I can say those classes helped a lot more than any of the micro/immun classes I took

Yeah I'm not biased at all either...

I anything I enjoyed immune/micro (virology and bacteriology were two of my favorite classes) - but having taken a wide scope of bio classes for my degree, hands down, molecular had the most overlap and applicable info

'Molecular Biology of The Cell', ch 1-19 covers molecular and cell bio. If you would rather self cover these.

^ that book is legit. It is one of the only books I actually used in all of college

I LOVED Immunology, but Molecular/Cell Biology would probably be a better choice for the MCAT.

Thank you guys. The reason I was going to take immuno over molecular is that after looking through the outline of molecular and biochem, I can see that lots of the info overlap so I thought I might just take biochem with immunology instead. I think I'll keep them all if that's the case. Thanks!!!!

The net total of immune covered on MCAT is tinnnnny, and should be covered in basic bio. Do you know what an epitope, heavy chain, light chain, and antigen are? Pretty much set than 🙂 (obvious over simplification, but still...there is really not a lot on there)

biochem with immunology
These are the courses that will pay the most dividends in your MCAT preparation. Unless you have a keen interest in immunology or need it as an upper division elective for a degree, there's really no need. Cell/Molec bio and Biochemistry plays a key role in the MCAT. Assuming you get into medical school you will get all you need there.

What if I take them all both
Biochem, immuno, molecular at same time? I tend to think that molecular is repetition of genetics and cell bio which I have taken before. I have also taken developmental. Or I could use my time to concentrate on biochem. Thanks

In my degree program, cell/molec is a 200 level prep for 300 level genetic analysis, which is in turn preps you for 400 level developmental. The interdependency and overlap are designed into the recommended academic plan. Your mileage may vary. As for immunology, I think the consensus here is that it's a nice-to-have. You don't need immunology, but you do need to make sure you have all the stuff in cell/molec suitcased. If you do go ahead and take immunology, that's going to be the one to drop if things get rough.
