I am debating signing up for uptodate since it's so popular and spend the xtra money. I've been using emedicine so far Im happy c the information get from it for the different disease mgts - except I cannot enlarge the images.

At the same time I don't want to put aside a good source of information, especially in preparation for step 2 CS. I haven't had a chance to use uptodate myself so I can't compare the two. Can any one pls offer an advice or opinion on these two services? 😕 Appreciated, thanx

Then why don't you just subscribe to emedicine (I believe then you can enlarge the images) - sounds like that should solve your problems.

thanx for the suggestion. I am ok c/o enlarging the images. What I'm really interested is on the pathophysiology, history, physical, treatment, etc. I am asking for the quality of content w/n these two services -sort of which one nails it right on the head as far as giving me the tools for step 2. Any other responses will be appreciated.

ive heard uptodate is superexpensive...have you checked into that? You can always use it at your school (if they have it) and email the articles to yourself...

i've tried both. emedicine, while free, can be somewhat limited with regard to finding certain things. uptodate tends to have huge, detailed articles on topics you'd think required only a few sentences to explain. i've even seen a few uptodate articles with full color images...more than what emedicine will provide with each article. however, some dont mind using emedicine. but there has to be a reason why uptodate is costing a lot of money.

by the way, its 500 bucks for physicians, yet its only 200 (still a lot) for residents, but better than spending 500. you hvae to fax them proof that you are a resident however.

neither one is necessary for step 2.

your school should have an institutional subscription to one or both of these.

Many thanx for your responses. Right now I am doing MSIII rotations in Ireland and in this particular hosp the computers don't have internet access (I have internet at home though). Unfortunately my school does not have an institutional subcription to uptodate.

doc05 - I was curious why neither one is necessary for step 2? Could you pls elaborate? thanx

The other thing to consider, is that you can get a version of either emedicine or uptodate for your PDA.

I use the uptodate on my PDA and have found it and the drug DB invaluable.

do they not offer uptodate for the Palm OS platform?

uptodate for pocketpc is 902 mb!!!! holy crap.

Yep, I got me a little memory card. Not only allows me to get uptodate, but to store other files (Usually data) on it.

If you get all of the stuff for Emedicine for the PDA, it too is pretty sizeable.

Regarding Stillen's question...I think they (UpToDate) only offer it for the pocketPC, BUT are looking at making available for the PalmOS (who knows when, though.).
