Anyone here has any knowledge/link/done a project/heard of on the effects of different kinds of food on the human blood pressure and/or heart rate?
Need help kinda urgent because my internet search turned out nothing.

Thanks!

Hey,

Could you be more specific? Are you looking for foods that raise or lower b.p.? Are you looking at an immediate change or gradual?

First ask yourself: What physical factors affect blood pressure? Hormonal (ADH, Aldosterone), chemical (salt content, etc.), vessel elasticity (think affects of nicotine, caffiene, water), etc.
Start thinking methodically before asking people to do your homework for you 😉

High salt diets increase your circulating pool of adrenal cortico steriods, increasing BP and effects of elevated adrenaline (learned this from paper looking at Beta-B affects and diet). Caffeine is obviously one that increase HR and to a lesser extent changes BP. Not sure what else you are looking for. Meals/Foods that quickly boost blood sugar and result in insulin spikes are shown to lead to Metabolic Syndrome X. This increases chances of coronary artery disease and diabetes.

Anything with caffeine (soda, coffee, etc.) or chocolate will increase heart rate.

Grapfruit juice also has a chemical (as yet unknown) that blocks the metabolism of many drugs in the liver. The chemical is thought to be an inhibitor of the CYP450 drug-metabolism cascade. This is especially important when taking drugs that are solely limited to liver metabolism/elimination and drugs that tend to act on the heart when present in large amount, example being calcium channel blockers. The drug seldane was removed from market for causing "Torsades De pointes" and this was a result of blocking the metabolism in the liver.

The following food:
A) Wasabi
B) Lemon juice
C) Chocolate

We're doing tests on different subjects to see what will happen to their BP and HR if they are given the following food (above).
And try to link it to any jurnals (ie research done before) if possible. So far, we have not found anything on any of the major jurnal websites

anything that will spike your insulin level should create a relaxed hypotensive state... 👍 👍 ---> Insulin Coma???

Hey Ericdamiansean,

Here is a wild idea. Have you tried the search on www.pubmed.gov or medscape or MD consult. These are good reputable sites that might have some good research and something solid you can use. But just from my quick knowledge, the foods (chemicals) that can cause it, include: 1) caffeine, 2) tyramine (found in milk, aged cheese and wine), salt can cause blood pressure to rise, so any food rich in Na+, hence the sodium restriction in hypertensive patients. There is info out there bud, you just gotta find it. And that oh I searched on the internet and I didn't find it is a copout, search more, refine your search. Bottom line if you search it properly then you will find it. Good luck.

Hey there W222,

Great post about grapefruit juice being the inhibitor of P450 system. One little question though, what does that haver ANYTHING to do with rising BP and HTN. I know you probably had burning desire to talk about the P450 system, but please let's stick to the topic at hand.
