how can they change so much!!!
Because if they didn't change them, then they couldn't sell their magazine issue or get your credit card number on the web every year to look and see how the list has changed! :D

It's like the Fashion industry...it changes every year ON PURPOSE so that new designs can be sold.

It's a total scam.

Now I know what Nietzsche was talking about when he said (in translation of course...) "God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him."

well, at least all the georgetown applicants are happy now ;)

hmmm.... good post.
however columbia consistently ranks higher than cornell.
ugh.... this doesnt help me at all

Thanks for posting the ranking!!! This has been sooooooo helpful. I was having a hard time deciding between some of my acceptances, but now it's all crystal clear!

It seems like I was worrying too much about comparing curricula, student body happiness, faculty, campus aura, cost etc.- but now it all makes sense where I'm going!! Thanks again!!!!

u can get all of the old usnews rankings back when they started ranking if u do a search on lexis-nexis. it'd be easier to read if someone could format these rankings into table format.

I'm madly writing an essay so don't have time to post everything, but. if you're on a college library or campus network w/ access to lexis-nexis, go to academic university, select Step 1: GENERAL NEWS, Step 2: MAGAZINES AND JOURNALS, Step 3: type "ranking" -- full text box 1, "mcat" --full text box 2. choose 'all available dates' in the lower box. and u should be able to get access to all of the rankings since 1990.

Here's a summary from 1990:
TOP MEDICAL SCHOOLS

1. Harvard University
2. John Hopkins University, Md.
3. Duke University, N.C.
4. Univ. of California at San Francisco
5. Yale University, Conn.
6. Washington University, Mo.
7. Cornell University, N.Y.
8. Columbia University, N.Y.
9. University of Washington
10. University of Pennsylvania
11. Univ. of California at Los Angeles
12. Stanford University, Calif.
13. University of Michigan

Is it me or does Yale have a downward trend?

well, yale's up-and-coming. w/ the new congress ave. buidling, for a couple of years when the congress ave building was demoished, yale had a lot less research space. i've heard that there will be a 20% increase in research capacity in the upcoming years. translate that to a few positions in ranking.

I don't know. What all those lists say to me is that the top 15 schools have been listed in the top 15 for over a decade. Sort of reaffirms for me that pretty much all the schools in that group are top notch.

It seems to me that most schools within a general tier are essentially equal and this is what I was told by all my premed advisors. If this is true, then you would expect a numbers based ranking system to have a lot of movement because the schools are so similar. Clearly, this list shouldn't be used to differentiate between hopkins and penn, nor should it be used to differentiate between school A listed 20 or school B listed 30.

Although I hate the way these lists are often used, in some ways rank lists can be useful. I'm from the Northeast and in all honesty, I am very unfamiliar with the quality of many state schools in the midwest of on the west coast (call me ignorant I guess). Before this process, I knew of Stanford of course, but I had no idea how good say UCSF or UMich were.

Hey I was just like you, didn't even know that UCSF and UMich was held in such regard until I started applying and looking at US news rankings and Gourman rankings. My mcat instructor told us he got a 40 on the mcat and said he was going to UCSF. My ignorant a$$, was like why doesn't he go to yale, columbia, or cornell with a score like that. I admitt I was a lay person myself.
