USC Class of 2012: Trojan Family Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A question for current Trojans: I am interested in the Certificate Programs that I saw on the SOP Catalogue webpage for USC. Before I get too excited though, I want to make sure I have the right idea: you take some extra classes and you get a certificate saying you took some extra classes? Like a mini-minor or mini-specialty? Or is it designed for non-pharm students? (The courses are listed under SOP but the program is Regulatory Science?)

Thanks!

yay!
ihave a place to go next year!!!! mail just came. i interviewed feb 23rd =)

Hey. I got an interview invite a couple days ago for the march interview. I have an interview for my #1 choice this saturday, so I will most likely decline the interview at USC (I am missing a couple "pre-req" classes I do not intend on re-taking). So, there is still a chance for someone else to be invited next week for the march interview! Hope that gives a little hope...

You are a saint. Thanks for doing that. I will do the same for someone else next year.

I haven't seriously looked at these yet. I know they exist, and I know you must take extra classes to get them, but I don't know if they're geared for pharmacy students or for other professions who want paper showing they have knowledge in the certificate area.

Hey guys... whoever received an active consideration letter today, can you please type what it said about that stats... for example, "42 out of 100 people who interviewed received an acceptance letter, 2 from the first interveiw, etc... how many people were placed on active consideration and IF anybody got a rejection letter..." USC usually says all those things in their active consideration letter... I haven't received anything today and am just wondering about those stats... THANK YOU!

Hi everyone!

I got my conditional acceptance in the the mail today.

Good luck to everyone still waiting!

What do you mean by "conditional acceptance"? What is that condition?
By the way, when did you interview?
Thanks!

Oh yeah, it means that I still have to complete my outstanding prerequisites before mid-August and maintain my cumul. GPA > 3.0 in order to still be accepted.

I interviewed Feb 23.

Anyone from active consideration list got accepted????

For those people who got into USC for the February 23rd interview, I was wondering what time you had your interview and what is the 1st letter of your last name start with. And if you don't mind, please state your stats (GPA, extracurricular activities, your major, what school you went to, etc).

Thanks!

Last semester Bio, Economics, and Biochemistry

I was accepted too, and i really liked the school. But, i'm also thinking about the costs (36,000/year for tuition alone), which is making me reconsider some of the public schools i have been accepted to. I was wondering, how are most of the USC pharm school students paying for their schooling? Any advice? 🙂

Most of us are taking out loans. Many of us are maxing out the loans available to us. Several will likely graduate with ~200K in loans given $32000/yr in Stafford + $18K/year in GradPLUS loans.

That's big money 🙂 Compared to the ~100-120K you'd owe out of a UC

so i called USC this morning and asked about those placed on active consideration previously that haven't recieved the monthly update of their status, and they said that they only sent out acceptance letters on friday and all teh active consideration letters will be sent out this week. Furthermore, there are no rejections this round but they will star rejcting afte the march interview ....yikes!

I said I found nothing in my mailbox so i guessed that I would receive an "active consideration" status letter. Shehsheh, I know you're eager and worried and anxious and I am too, but it will come... Hope good news will come soon!

When were you accepted? Were you accepted after previously being under active consideration?

can someone give me an estimate on how much it will cost to live in a single dorm room on campus at usc, and which hall is the safest/cleanest to live in? what are the peak times and deadlines to apply for housing...i hope i'm not too late...thanks in advance!

That's why we lose a lot to UCSF I'd wager.

...and here's one more...

Though I would have been very happy to attend USC, I am going to decline their offer of acceptance, because I just found out that I got accepted to UCSF, my #1 choice. So, there's another spot open for y'all!

Good luck, USC hopefuls! And happy late St. Patty's! :luck:

Woohoo, congrats Yoda 😀 I bet you'll have a great time at UCSF hehe

Thank you! And thank you to everyone else for all the support, etc., especially Farmercyst, who has been really helpful throughout the whole process. Take care, all. 🙂

👍 Thanks for the vote of support. Just returning the favor for all the support last year at OSU, Western, LLU, and USC.

I interviewed in late Jan, and was accepted in mid Feb.
About housing, should we apply now, or wait for the housing information (campus housing and apartment housing)
to come in the mail? I noticed that they did not include any housing info in the acceptance package. Also, does USC offer university based grants or scholarships? And is it recommended to have a car your first year? Sorry for asking so many questions, but I really appreciate everyone's input! Thank you🙂

Hey Farmercyst, I had a quick question. I know acceptance letters were mailed out on Friday.. but admissions said they will meet again this week. Should we only expect "active consideration" letters for everybody else, or will more people be getting accepted? I think someone mentioned that nobody (who had an interview) will be rejected this round? Can you please clarify. THANK YOU.

I really have no idea. I've tried to get little glimpses into ADCOM activities when the chance presents itself, but I've really tried not to get too snoopy when it comes to what's going on. I don't have any info on when they meet or what they're deciding when. As far as not rejecting anyone this round, I haven't heard this. That's not to say it's not true; I'm not in that loop, nor have I poked my nose in it.

Can't speak to housing. I know a few people in my class with SDN accounts, but I'm not sure how many are in the dorms. I can see if I can find one to post info re: on-campus housing and timing. If you mean off-campus, you can start looking, but when I was looking last year, most landlords wanted immediate move in and wouldn't hold a place for you. I ended up waiting til August to move because I wanted to wait til the last possible minute to quit my $27/hr job. That's not to say you shouldn't look, it just means unless you plan on moving right away, it allows you to see what the good locations are and how much you can plan to spend in those areas.

Re: grants and scholarships. The only thing I know of is a low interest loan (Perkins I think) that is given to 1st years who meet financial need requirements based on FAFSA info. There are only a limited number of them, and they're automatically given to the first X-number of people who qualify. Jesse Stasher or Allison Bryant in financial aid could probably tell you better what the details are. For scholarships, I'd go outside the school. I believe Golden Key and a few other undergrad organizations offer scholarships for Grad programs, studentaid.ed.gov I believe has a scholarship database much like the for profit/non-profit scholarship databases out there. It may be worth a look.

Depending on where you live and who you live with, a car is almost a must- have. If you are on campus, life will get very boring if you can't leave campus. There is a bus that will take you to/from Union Station (if you want to take Metrolink somewhere), Main Campus, and the Satellite Campus in Alhambra . There's also the Metro buses that will take you pretty much anywhere. I just like the freedom of deciding my own schedule and the passengers I ride with.

Hey guys, I've been following this thread for a while now. Thanks for posting so much information, it's great! I recently interviewed at USC (Feb 23) and got my acceptance this past monday (conditional acceptance). Anyway, I was just wondering why you are all interested in USC. I'm trying to make a decision to go here or to UOP (if they decide to accept me).

Here's how I see their pros and cons for my specific situation:

UOP= 3 years, cheaper, not very prestigious, cheaper rent
USC=4 years, more expensive, prestigious, have to take one class, expensive rent

*I also believe that a person's educational experience is greatly based on the amount of time and effort that is invested (Are there major fundamental differences in the school's methods or curriculum?)*

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I would like to know why you like USC or why you would like to go to this particular school over other schools you have applied to. Thank you in advance for your posts!!

...and in return I give you my stats...

Overall GPA: 3.59
Science GPA (pharmcas): 3.56
EC: ~1.5 years volunteer, 1 year retail pharmacy, new job (3 months) at a hospital pharmacy.
Interview: I thought it went really well. a lot better than my UOP interview.

Not to be mean, but USC has the worst Financial Aid staff ever. I submitted my FAFSA in early Feb, and I received an e-mail from USC saying that I'm missing that doc. So I faxed over my FAFSA process report showing the dates of my submission and school code to USC TWO times. Today, I just called USC again and they said they still haven't receive my FAFSA form. So I contacted FED AID office and they said my FAFAS has been complete and the school should be able to access. Even funny is that when I e-mailed USC couple weeks ago about regarding my FAFSA form, I received an e-mail back saying " Your interview on March 26th is confirmed" LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I'm sorry but I'm sure some of you guys probably had the same problem. I'm just really pissed right now

Anyone having a miserable time as a USC PharmD student? I need to mentally prepare 😀
