USC Class of 2012: Trojan Family Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is that how long we have to wait to hear back from USC for their final (well kind of final I guess) decision? Did Jim say much about this?

He said 3-4 weeks. But, he said only call him after 4 weeks. So, we need to wait. If someone get a letter, he/she will post something here, right?🙂

Yep, that was me. I heard a couple people asked one of my classmates which one Farmercyst was and she didn't know. She came up later and asked me if it was me. Oh well, see ya in the Fall perhaps.

I confess, I was one of the people who asked the P1 student if she could point out to me who "Farmercyst" was. I wanted to thank you in person for sharing with us the interview/admissions process. Thanks! 🙂

I really enjoyed Jim Granderson's welcome speech.

Can you pick which locations where you want to do your 1st year pharmacy experiences?

Can you do any of your 4th year rotations in other states?

Thanks in advance Famercyst for your help.

Not really. They email you before the semester starts and ask you to pick 2 retail and 2 hospital locations you'd like to do your IPPE in, but I don't think it does any good. I requested places near my house and was placed 20 miles away. I know they're limited in rotation sites, but a list of possibilities to choose from would have been nice. I wasted an hour looking to see which pharmacies were close to my house and looked interesting.

4th year rotations yes, you can go to other states. Some are already setup, others you may have to coordinate with the Experiential Rotations coordinator. Not sure how the intern licensing works for those.

Does this mean a car is required as a pharmacy student?

As much as I want to focus on pharmacy school, I can't help but worry about my finances. Are loans my only option or can I work while in school?

From what I heard from the wrap-up session during the interview, you can work if you want to. You just have to make sure that you can catch up with school work and everything. But remember it's not easy getting into USC in the first place so you don't want to fall behind. Yes, the loan is always in everyone's mind but so what? You will pay it off once you work.

Or another option, you can work during the second semester once you're getting used to everything. Remember that time management is the key!🙂

So we will be doing 4 IPPE's a semester? Are they several hours each week?
What time does class start each day, 8 AM?

Thank you again.

Techinically it's one IPPE/semester your first year. One IPPE total 2nd year. No IPPE's third year and 6 APPE's 4th year.

1st year IPPE's are 4 weeks long, 2 days/week, 5 hours/day. 2nd year is IV rotation, which I believe is 6 weeks and I don't know how many days (I think 5) or how many hours (I think 5 still). 4th year I'm pretty sure is 8hrs/day 5 days/week, 6 weeks each.

Classes 1st year start at 8am with occassional exception.
2nd year start at 1 pm
3rd year starts at 9 am
4th year based on Clerkship requirements.

You can work while in school, but try finding a job that pays $32000/year plus living expenses. So, yeah you'll be relying primarily on loans with/without a job. As mentioned time management is the key. I've been working 20hrs/week the last few weeks and it has changed my study habits, but I have poor study habits to begin with, so that's not saying much. Plus 10 of those hours are in the computer lab at school that requires I make sure the printer is stocked and no one trashes the lab. Beyond that I can study or waste time on SDN.(like right now).

For those of you who got accepted, did you receive any information about April 10 orientation/meeting? I saw it on USC c/o 2012 Facebook group, but did not get anything in mail/email! And how many of you are going?
Thanks you.

nope 🙁. I saw it on facebook too LOL

I got a letter about the Welcome Reception in the mail. I got accepted early on back in Dec, so maybe that's how I got one? There's another one in June also in case you can't make the April one.

I would like to go this month since I'm going to be traveling for the summer. Do we call to RSVP? I didn't get the mail either, just people from facebook asking if I'm going to attend.

The orientation is good but if you guys live really far away, it is not necessary. Everything will be discussed in August when you start your classes but it is a nice way to meet current pharmacy students as well as your fellow classmates.

Hi, have you guys received information on what kind of loans you would be getting? I'm still in process of finishing up my parents' information on FAFSA, but I haven't heard anything from USC regarding loans. The deadline for parental information is not due until April 14th right?

Do we have to put our parent info in? I thought we were considered independent as grad students.

If anyone knows more about this I would appreciate a response.

Thanks.

The whole parent thing is a bit strange. I've been independent for nearly 10 years now so I called USC and asked if I really needed to fill out the parent portion of FAFSA. They said no, but they do need to fill out the supplemental parent form (you can download it from their website), which has the same information as FAFSA... If you are unsure, I'd call them and explain your situation and see what they think. They were really friendly when I called them.

Thanks for the info LabbyRatty

Farmercyst,
Do you happen to know how many people from the waitlist got into USC last year? I feel that only people who probably got accepted to UCSF actually declined to go to USC at the last minute. Thanks in advance! 🙂

As I recall, 25% of the people accepted to USC eventually decline the offer and attend another school.

Awesome! That means it's a better chance for the people who actually want to go there.😀 I'm dying to go there for the fall of 09.

That's sounds about right, and I think they statistically plan for a certain number to decline because our class of 185 actually was a class of 192. I guess not as many people declined as they had planned for. Either that or the decided at the last minute to add a few more, kinda like adding 30 extra interviewees to the last interview.😕

Jim told us at the March interview that he would accept 190 students to account for those who would decline. I kept thinking that was just the "announced" number and it would be nearer to 200-220 like I've read on here, but considering what you're saying... maybe he really meant 190. :scared:

Yeah, my guess is they'll initially overshoot by let's say 10%, so maybe they'll accept 210. Then as those extra 20 decline, they may add another x seats, until as July/August approach, if they're at 190 they may only add like 2-3 extra to account for any last second declines. Again this is only a guess based on how I'd run things. Since I'm not running things, who knows. But at least it seems logical to me.

Does anyone know if there are laptop requirements? Thanks in advance 🙂

No laptop requirement. If you have one, great. If not, you won't need to get one.

Hey Farmercyst, Are the notes for your classes posted online? How does that work exactly, if a computer is not needed.

Thanks.

Thanks.

95% of the time we are given the powerpoints as handouts before class starts.
90% of the time the powerpoints are also posted on blackboard. (blackboard.com if you aren't familiar.)
Our first semester 75% of the lectures were video captured so that we had video/audio available. That's not the case this semester unfortunately as the video capture is only available in 1 of the 2 lecture halls and they moved the one we meet in.
About 30-50% of the class pays for "notepool" which takes notes on 2 of our classes this semester and 3 of 5 classes last semester.

As you can see, there are so many sources of notes, that taking them on computer in class isn't really necessary.

There's a computer lab on the 3rd floor in the pharmacy building so if you don't have access at home you have it at school 12hrs/day 5days/week. Or you can use the computers in the library 18hrs/day 6 days/week.

thanks for the info! I know some schools are very strict about laptop requirements. I do need a new laptop, so I wanted to be aware before I buy!

I also wanted to buy a new laptop but I am going to have to wait. Some schools have this program where you have to buy their own laptop so I don't want to buy two. Like Farmercyst said, notes are available before class at USC so I won't worry too much about it. I personally like writing notes by hand. If I have a laptop in class, i'm afraid I won't be taking notes and end up watching movies and play games instead😛.

lets say i get accepted in a week or two. If I've finished all my prerequisites already, can I drop the 2 classes I am taking right now with a W? I am working full time and just dropping the classes would relieve me of much stress. The 2 classes are pharmacy tech classes that I am taking at a community college. I know Jim said we can't drop any prerequisites or any classes required for your bachelor's degre and must maintain a 3.0 gpa average.

As long as you meet that criteria you should be fine. When in doubt call Jim's office.

Hi!

Are they gonna accept people on active consideration list from November interviews when they review March interviewees?
If they do, when would the results be out?
end of April?

I'm so anxious :X
Thanks in advance!

I hate to post a reply with only half of an answer, but I thought I'd let you know that I interviewed on March 29th and they told us they would be sending out decisions in 3-4 weeks from that date. I don't remember what they said about the active consideration list (if they said anything at all) but if you hear from someone that they make offers to you at the same time, you can expect your news in another week or two!

I only know that they ve accepted 2 people from that dreaded list and that was before the march interviews. I wish I knew where I stand on that list but I remember Jim's words from the jan interview, where he said not to be too hopeful. Who knows!!!🙁

:luck::luck::luck::luck: I'm so anxious too! I want to go to USC! :luck::luck::luck::luck:

Thought I'd put it out there. 😀

I just called the admissions office, and asked them if everybody will be considered "equally" (as in the people that are on active consideration and the people that interviewed in March). From my understanding, she said that everybody would be considered equally and the best candidates will be accepted, some rejected, and the rest on waiting list... and that they should mail out the responses in 2 weeks.

if we get waitlisted, will we be notified of our positions? The letter should contain some info regarding our positions, right?

From what I understand, who ever gets put on active consideration will have a letter mailed out to them asking if they would like to be on the "official waiting list".... after they get the responses, they will mail out your # on the waiting list.
