USC Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been on AC since November - what are my chances? 3.5 cum, 3.4 sci , 7 months experience

I think your numbers sound good.

It would also help if you had solid LORs and a good interview.

I think the GPA is very important, but USC also tends to lean more toward the "whole" candidate vs. just the ones with high GPAs...

Wishing you the best of luck!

I have a few friends that are graduates who used to be student interviewers. Also, was able to get some tips from Xin and Jim. They all stressed that while GPA is an significant portion, you won't get in unless they think that you would be a good representative for USC once you are out in practice.

Thanks! 😳

got my rejection letter yesterday. I am a 4th time re-applicant. The last 3 years, I had interviews at USC but this year I was not offered an interview. I guess they gave up on me after some many years. No pity points for me. 🙁

I am sorry to hear that dumbguy. I think pharmacy schools in general are becoming much more competitive and difficult get in in the recent years, I've known several people with around 3.0 GPA, no PCAT, no pharmacy experiences getting into pharmacy schools left and right 5-6 years ago...you just don't hear that anymore...

Financial Aid question.

I received an email stating:
Please be aware that additional information is required in order to process
your 2009-2010 financial aid or loan application.

I completed FAFSA, which has been verified by the OASIS site. I have also faxed in the Pharmacy School Supplemental Form, which has been received and is pending.

I'm not doing Health Profession's Loan so I do not need to do the April 15 deadline stuff. (Right?)

So what am I missing? I think it's probably that my Pharmacy school supplemental form is still pending.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has received this email and has submitted all their documents.

PS: Yes, this is the first time I've dealt with Financial Aid stuff...and USC is expensive so I want to get it right 🙂

If you filed taxes for this year, you need to send them a copy of your federal tax forms even if you're not doing the Health Profession's Loan.

It is more competitive now, but I had a couple friends who got in to USC with no pharmacy experience whatsoever. Their GPA's were pretty high though and one of them had a strong research background. Made me feel like my research, pharm experience and decent GPA was worth nothing!!!

I hope that they don't weigh much on the interview portion. I'm bad at interview.

I've been looking at the results over the past few years now. It's not really about the pharmacy experience. I think the major points that I've noticed in my interview and I found in my friends were that they had leadership experience or research experience. I think USC values these over pharmacy experience. A strong GPA doesn't hurt either. However, if you're lacking in that department, pharmacy experience isn't really required.

Oh, I should mention more about my leadership and research experience in my interview. Thanks for your advice. I'll try my last shot at UOP this week. :xf:

Does anyone know if there is any movement in AC since Jan yet?

Yeah, I agree as well b/c I only shadowed a pharmacist..and that was back in high school. Also, I have a strong leadership position in my pharmacy club. So far so true.

I had leadership positions as well, so my GPA probably did me in.

Glad that I got in USC, but I am really worried about the 200K+ loan I will be taking out.
anybody planning on taking out "loans" from their parents?+pity+

i'm still waiting. did any of you guys interview on february 21?

Yeah, I'm still waiting too. I interviewed on feb 21. They said they'll let us know up to 4 weeks. So, hopefully they'll let us know next week! :xf:

Can someone post the mail letter for decions for USC interview on Feb21 i think it should come next week. like how many people they accepted and how many got into active consideration. Thank you bye

Dang, just got an email. I'm on active consideration. 🙁

"Dear.......
The Admission Committee of the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy has completed its
initial review of all applicants interviewed on February 21, 2009. Of the 96 applicants interviewed, 46 have
been offered admission for classes beginning Fall 2009. 50 applicants have been placed in an “active
consideration” status. No one has been denied.

The Committee has carefully reviewed your file and determined that you will continue to receive active
consideration but cannot be offered admission at this time. Each applicant in this status most definitely
meets or surpasses very high standards in one or more of the admission criteria. It is important that you
understand that this determination means that we may be unable to make a final decision on your file for
some time. Our office will continue to keep you informed about the admission process. Therefore,
everyone in the applicant pool will be aware of his/her status. The ranking of applicants with "active
consideration" status will not be completed until after the final interview has been completed. The last
interview session for this academic year is March 21, 2009.

As you finish additional coursework, especially required pre-pharmacy coursework, please send one
copy of official transcripts to the School of Pharmacy as soon as the grades are posted. This will help to
keep your status updated.

Thank you for your continued interest and patience.

Sincerely, "

Accepted! And it was quite a big envelope, too.

Now have to choose between USC and MWU-CPG...

Wow USC was prompt this time with updating AC people. But still no good news for me, only 9 people from November's AC group were admitted. 👎

so they have ~30 seats available.........? (i'm basing this off of page 20 : "I finally received my rejection letter today! They said over 580 applicants did not get an interview this cycle. They currently have a waitlist of 120 applicants after interview and have admitted 109 people for 185 seats.")

i hope they already accepted the TAP students.. and there's still one more interview date..

How many January AC people did they take?

They didn't say anything about the January interview...I got the same mail as everyone else I think. All they said was this:

"Nine candidates from the November 'active consideration' group were admitted. No applicants from all interviews have been denied."

Around 33 I think cuz they accepted 56 from November and 46 from Jan and Feb. and 9 from ac HAHA we're screwed on AC 🙁.

I guess they did not take anyone from the Jan interview that sucks. Can i know the GPA of people who got accepted since u are accepted already is there is 3.6 or 3.5 or all 3.7 and above. Thank you bye.

9 people admitted! That's better than the lousy 2 from last time. As for me, still ACTIVELY waiting. haha. Although, the email kind of scared me this time b/c the subject said "USC School of Pharmacy Decision Letter." I thought for sure it was a rejection email.

Maybe not. I heard, historically, they have taken ~60 people from the waitlist after all the interviews are over. I'm sure it varies from year to year, but it sure makes me feel a little more hopeful:xf:. Keep your heads up and good luck to you all!

Can you link to the posts? Thanks

Does anyone know how many TAP students got in in previous years?

Just wondering what the average % of seats end up going to them....seat stealers...

😏

I talked to Xin recently...

Apparently, the only thing you can do to improve your AC standing at this point is to improve your math/science GPA. Extracurricular activities, volunteer work, etc has already been evaluated and won't help out anymore.

Hope that helps.

woooot!!! I got accepted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! interviewed on 2/21. just got it in the mail this morning!!! wooooTTTTTTT!!!

hope and pray.

i don't see why they don't start rejecting people earlier instead of keeping everyone's hopes up..

AGREED. I want some closure already from this school. koercive, if usc doesn't work out, where will you be going?

But if I already complete the pre-req, wat can I do?

Take non-prereq maths and sciences. Though it depends on whether they consider only prereqs or all math/science. I've never asked that question, but I would hope my Medicinal Chemistry other non-prereqs were taken into consideration.

I was accepted to USC this round and was one of the 9 on AC from Nov. /JOY 😀
DarlingNikkiDid any of you on AC write a letter of intent?
But I actually wanted to post regarding the Letter of Intent question: Yes I did send in a letter of intent and updated my pre reqs. However, my prereqs did not increase my GPA and I still got in.

I really think the letter pushed me through so if you are on AC with decent stats/LOR/ExtraCur my recommendatoin is to send them a letter even though a post said an admin said it wont help. Why not give it a shot it wont take you that long and all it can do is help imo. gL to all waiting on AC and march interviews!!!!! :luck:
----EDIT--------------------
I just also wanted to point out it makes sense that extracur, volunteer wont help now because there is one interview left and you get a final decision in about a month or 2. Any new volunteer/extracur would not even have given you more than 1/4 of a years, 3 month, help/experience. Thus, I definitely would not place LOI under the same umbrella as extracur/volunteer.

My year the number of TAP students was in the teens (16 I think)
Last year it was probably upper teens/low 20's.
This year I believe it was higher, 30's
So it is representing a higher number of the accepted students, and these are unlikely to turn down SC for SF like a lot of the other applicants.
We normally lose ~50 to other schools/yr (SF, SD primarily, but also others)
