USC Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My year the number of TAP students was in the teens (16 I think)
Last year it was probably upper teens/low 20's.
This year I believe it was higher, 30's
So it is representing a higher number of the accepted students, and these are unlikely to turn down SC for SF like a lot of the other applicants.
We normally lose ~50 to other schools/yr (SF, SD primarily, but also others)

Thank you for you thoroughness! I am glad that it is only in the 30s...I was thinking it was higher. (UOP is pushing 100!!) I appreciate you taking the time to fill me in.
:luck:

So.... what are my chances on AC since December?

If anyone is interested, USC is holding a welcome reception April 6, which means, decisions should be made at the end of March or the beginning of April.

anyone else got a mail from USC containing the release forms for the background/drug check?

I hope they're quick with this last interview, so they can let the AC people know what's going on. I hate waiting. 😛

i just got back from my interview this morning. there's about 125 interviewing today and the guy said there's 57 (not sure the exact number) seats left to be given. not sure if that's including tap or not. i hope so!

ugh just woke up from a really long nap after my 8:30 interview this morning....anywho the director of admissions said we'll hear in 3-4 weeks, but don't call the office after 3 weeks. he said it'll most likely be 4 because they're busy with stuff. so good luck to all!!!

i just had an interview today....the student interviewer didn't ask me any questions....it was only me and the faculty interviewer talking.....i felt it was really short......are these bad signs? :scared:

I can't say it's a bad thing b/c that occured to me as well but I still got accepted during the november interview. And my interview felt like it lasted only 15mins max.

i felt like the student and faculty member were talking to each other more than they were talking to me. i couldn't tell if it was a ploy to make me be more assertive haha but i felt like if i said anything, it'd be rude. they definitely challenged me with their questions but i felt like i held my own.

what surprised me was what some of the P1 students said before the interviews. it seemed that some of them didn't really like it. one of them just straight out said she doesn't like usc. but on the . other hand, others said they love it. so who knows. i guess base your decision on what you want, not what other people want because it's you that has to attend the school.

Hmm. When I went to interview, everyone there said they loved it. I'm sure there are people who don't like it, but it would seem why would they bother to show up to talk to interviewing students. Unless, they're making it their mission to keep students from coming to the school. 😛 I liked it when I was there, that's why I was disappointed with getting on the AC list. We'll see though. I hope there are some spots left.

Does anybody know when the welcome reception is for the class of 2013? Someone said its April 6, but at the March 21 interview they said it takes 3-4 weeks to make decisions on the March interviewees. Thanks!

There are usually two welcome receptions. One apparently April 6, but usually another in late June/Early July. Since 60-90 people end up going somewhere else after being accepted, they usually see half at one and half at the other. It's amazing how the scenery changes as you get closer to orientation week in August.
I believe it was 83 who were accepted and went somehere else last year.

Until last Saturday I would have said it was odd. In December and February the faculty interviewer and I decided we would alternate questions. This last interview the faculty interviewer pretty much went straight down the list and at the end asked if I had any questions I wanted to ask. 😕
As far as how it affects your score, I'd say it doesn't really. A positive interview has more to do with how you answer the questions regardless of who asked them.

Also on the November AC List...Go Lucky 89!

They're just saving the best for last...that's all.

:xf:

HAHAHA I dunno about that. But I sure hope so! A lot of UCSF acceptances went out this week from the looks of that thread. I hope that helps us out some. :xf:

does USC accept candidates w/ gpa <3.4? Jim said that they add up the points for each person based on their paper app, interview, and writing sample. wouldn't this mean that the people with higher gpa are ranked higher? =\

I was in the last interview, and I bombed it... they asked me a very personal question and I was teary-eyed most of the rest of the interview. oh no...

Yes they accept ppl under 3.4. It is not uncommon at all.

Looking at last years thread, more ac ppl will start getting accepted, rejected, or waitlisted in april. Last years wait list numbered up to 130.

So a regular Double at Seaver hall is $570/month. What do you guys think about that?

How's the cafeteria/campus food? (price and quality)

Is there a kitchen residents can use?

Can you get much cheaper rent off campus?

Also, do any current students or alumni have tips/hints/advice to give...so we can have a successful and enjoyable 4 years 🙂

You can find affordable options off campus with some facebooking and research. Popular choices are Pasadena and a nearby Asian district. These both require commuting but you'd be near commercial district thathealth sciences just doesn't offer. I know the cafeteria closes so I don't know how dorm residents fend for themselves. A lot of med students did not recommend the dorms. It is incredibly cost effective though for the convenience. (No parking fees, walk down to class and back) It depends on your lifestyle and how much debt you want to accrue.

For those accepted off of Active Consideration, do they send you an email first than the big package in the mail?

Does USC only accept applicants with a 4 year degree? or did some of you who got accepted only have 2 years of pre pharm under their belts?

Based on Jim (the dean), he said that they didn't accept anyone without a 4 year degree, but I'm not sure if there are any outliers though.

I vouch for him saying that if you didn't have a 4-year degree, you weren't accepted and that this would be strictly a requirement next cycle.

I know someone that didn't have a 4 year degree and got accepted from the first interview... or did you mean have one at the time classes start?

By the time of class start, you are expected to have a Bachelor's degree.

Um..I was wondering if anyone knew that USC changed their requirements...I could've swore that a bachelors degree was not required but I just visited the site now, and a bachelors degree is required prior to entrance....
I am I seeing things or was it always this way?
Did anyone apply and get in w/o a B.S./B.A degree?

If you look at a few posts above yours, someone mentioned that this year they only accepted students with bachelor's degrees, though I don't think it was listed as being required but from now on it's going to be required. It makes sense though. Gaining acceptance into pharmacy school is becoming more competitive, and tons of students apply to USC that they can afford to only accept people with bachelor's degrees.

so anyone planning on or have already sent in a letter of intent besides midwstchk?

Does USC pick around ~50 students from the march interviews or do they pick fewer from the last pool?

I sent one a few days after I got the active consideration email. I hope it helps. It really expresses how I felt about the school, and hopefully they'll see that. I wonder when they'll send an update for people on Active Consideration. From checking the forums, it seemed like the AC people got emailed on the same day that I got the email saying that I was on AC, which was 3 weeks after my interview. If that's going to be the case this go round, we should hear something from them next Friday? I hope so. I'm so tired of waiting to hear back from everyone. 😛

Thank you. I was starting to feel ignored. 🙂

For those accepted, do you think about the amount of debt you'll be in or do you try to ignore it? Just something I've been wrestling with for awhile (not that I'm in yet), but something to think about. I really love USC and the feeling I got there, just that price tag gives me a migraine. Just wondering how others that are going or hope to go to USC feel about it.

Western is actually more I think! Most CA schools are just that much, think about UCSF. It may only be 22K for tuition but the cost of living is way more in San Francisco. The good thing is that the salary for pharmacists will adjust for inflation and we should be making probly around 150K by the time we are out!

Yeah, I noticed Western is more. I also was curious how much UCSF cost for being a public school, and shockingly it's almost the same amount for the private school I was accepted at. I think it's a few thousands cheaper, which is just mind boggling. I dunno, I'm a worrier by nature, so just looking at the total cost causes stomach pains. 😛

My Friend graduated from UCSF and she's buried deep in loans!

A lot of USC pharmacy students ignore it. Upon graduation, it hits home a little harder. You probably won't have problems repaying it, but you will be repaying a lot and living a bit more modestly. If you think about the amount of debt you are in as a student, you can live more frugally while in school, force more work into your schedule, or apply for scholarships to shave off a few dollars. I think the most frustrating thing is the fact they are loans, as if the school itself wasn't expensive. To know you are paying an extra 50k just for borrowing it sucks.

It's true. Pharmacy schools are relatively similar in tuitions. Competition isn't really driving the prices down. Even assuming increases in fees and living expenses, the public schools still save at least 10k, which isn't too bad.

It did seem like a lot of students choose to ignore how much debt they're getting into. Not to say they don't think about it, they just didn't seem to openly express concern. At Western, they did talk about it and broke down the cost some, which helped. One student at Western told us they'll talk with you and break down everything for the next four years, and it's scary but you have that to worry about later. I wish USC would have talked about the financial aspects of going to school there at the interview. Although, they're not expensive as Western. I guess that's what I keep thinking, that there are plenty of people that are doing it, so it's not like I'll be the first person to take out the loans. It's kind of hard though to forget about it, especially if you haven't had much or had to deal with loans.

If I do get the opportunity to attend, I think I will take it. I figure I'd probably live in the dorms anyways, and that will cut down cost, work part-time (maybe), and look for scholarships and such to help reduce the cost. It's something I really want, so I just have to make it happen. 🙂

Don't Dorms cost more than living frugally with roommates off campus?

I thought they did? I think $570 with 1 roommate. I was trying to figure in the fact that you won't have to pay utilities and such. I've been doing some research online (though I know that doesn't mean it's everything that's available), and everything else just seemed so expensive. Not sure though, I could be wrong. I'll have to look around to make sure.

im gonna leech off the tax payers aka military scholarship 🙂 check it out the take home pay is 5-7k a month plus theyll pay up to 111k of your loans (27k a year) so it ends up being a good deal.
