USC Class of 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought they did? I think $570 with 1 roommate. I was trying to figure in the fact that you won't have to pay utilities and such. I've been doing some research online (though I know that doesn't mean it's everything that's available), and everything else just seemed so expensive. Not sure though, I could be wrong. I'll have to look around to make sure.

Dorms are not the best alternative. No one medical or pharmacy really use them. So I doubt they are the best option. Assuming you don't bring a car, it only benefits you if you don't plan on leaving your room except for school. For anything else like food or entertainment or volunteering, you will be out of luck without a car. My friends, current 'SC pharm students, are renting for about that rent or less for their own room in a nearby city. If you are going to bring a car, then the point is moot as you will have to add the parking fee which everyone off campus or on campus have to pay ~200.

Thanks for letting me know! I'm deciding if I'll be bringing my car or not. It's not a terrible car, but more than once it's let me down. Also, those California freeways freak me out. 😛 lol, I sound like I'm in already. Knowing my luck, I won't get it and this conversation would have been so unnecessary. 😀

So, if I dorm...I'll be living with mostly undergraduates? o.0

That won't be good...

How much do your friends pay? and how far are they from campus?

I thought that dorm was for graduate students, so you could be living with a med student, pharm, etc. I don't remember them saying undergrads though, but I could be wrong.

Does anyone know when students apply for intern license (P1) at USC? Is it during orientation? Also, how long before the intern license is processed? I'm trying to figure out at what point in the semester I can start working as an intern for $$$

It is only for health sciences students. It's just not popular.

For those accepted, do you think about the amount of debt you'll be in or do you try to ignore it? Just something I've been wrestling with for awhile (not that I'm in yet), but something to think about. I really love USC and the feeling I got there, just that price tag gives me a migraine. Just wondering how others that are going or hope to go to USC feel about it.

I didn't think about it to much before I got accepted since it was my first choice school. Now that I have been accepted, the debt I'm going to incur has been my first concern. Although in my case I can live with my parents since they live about 10 minutes from campus. So at least I only have to worry about tuition which is still going to be about 160k 👎. Anyone think tuition might go down the next four years?

That's good that you only have to worry about tuition. Living cost is one of the most things I'm worried about if I end up at USC. Tuition is set in stone for the year. They're not going to increase in after you've paid your money (they might increase it the next year though 👎), but living costs can vary each month. I don't think tuition is going down. If anything, it'll go up. They have no reason to lower the tuition because there are so many people wanting to go there. It all comes down to supply and demand. 😛

Western is actually more I think! Most CA schools are just that much, think about UCSF. It may only be 22K for tuition but the cost of living is way more in San Francisco. The good thing is that the salary for pharmacists will adjust for inflation and we should be making probly around 150K by the time we are out!

I thought the tuition for Western and USC were about the same. How much more is Western U than USC (per year)?

I think about it almost everyday! I never had to take out loans for school before so to see I might end up owing 200,000+ worries me!! I keep thinking about how and when will I ever pay this off?! 😱 I say to myself it's an investment in my education, but sometimes I kinda wish I got accepted into my state school so I can save myself some money, but you live and you learn. I've been in NYC my whole life and I'm such a home body. It's time for me to explore and see what else is out there, so in that respect I'm glad I have to opportunity to attend USC. This was the only school I got accepted to and that in itself is a blessing. Yes, I'm going to pay a bit more for my degree, but at least I'm able to say I will be attending a reputable school that is known for its strong program and will rightfully prepare me for the profession 🙂.

I decided to dorm the 1st year just to get accustomed to USC and living in Cali in general. Dorm life sounds boring without a car! My plan is to get there early so I can buy a car. Nothing fancy, just something to get me from point A to B and back again. When I interviewed there, I was amazed how isolated the campus is to shopping centers and etc. I'm not used to that at all!! I'm definitely going to look for an apartment for the remaining three years though.

lol, you sound like me, except for the part about being accepted...yet. :luck: I've lived in the south my whole life, and I'm a home body too. Flying for my interviews was the first time I ever flew (well I flew once when I was 5 but I don't count that since I don't even remember) and visited a different state by myself. I was really worried but now I feel like I can handle it. I still really wish to get accepted by USC. I just really enjoyed the school from what I saw. $200+ is a lot, but I keep think it's been done before by other people and like you said, it is an investment. I know all this is premature, but for now I'll be California dreamin'. 😀

OMG! I GOT IN!!!! I was placed on active consideration but I just received word today that I was officially taken off AC status and accepted!!! I'mg so excited!! USC was my #1 choice school!!! 😍😍😍

Same here. I wasn't expecting anybody to hear anything for at least another weak. Now I'm freaking about this too.

Thanks!

Ditto... I think I will keep checking this forum whole day today. I see some hope, but I think I will again end up with disappointment.

Good luck to you!!

congrats to the people that just got in!!
I have a question for those that are already accepted. Did any of you get phone calls from USC pharm students offering to answer your questions about the school? I got a call from one of the student last week, which kinda surprised me, cuz I couldn't figure out how would any of those student get a hold of my number.

Maybe admissions gave it to them?

Thank you to you all! I was actually pretty surprised that I heard from them today (actually surprised I was accepted altogether). I didn't even know they were geting ppl off the AC list already! Anyways, I've been on AC since way back in Nov. and I have about a 3.5, some extracurriculars/leadership/volunteer/experience (nothing too fancy really). I was notified by email. good luck to you guys. there is still hope! 👍

I am trying to find someone interested in this position at Western U. If you live in the SoCal area espeically Pomona then give me a pm and I will tell you more about it.

IMO...This position can make you look a little different when applying to pharmD since you will have something different to say then the generic I work at .... CVS/Riteaid...or etc.

I would still work here but got accepted to USC.

4hrs/day, am or pm (depends on your schedule), 20hrs/week

hey, there
I'm a new member of this forum, and I'm really interested in working in Western U as researcher in pharmacy field. Would you let me know more information of how to apply for this position. THANKS.

This post is from awhile back so I am not sure you can go apply.

I hope to meet some of you at the welcome reception. Please bring a lot of questions because you will have direct access to us students.

Dorms are all HSC students. I know several Pharm students in our class that were there the first year. Most don't stay past the first, but I wouldn't say they were a bad choice. We've got a classmate with a 4.0 in those dorms. I won't say that that's why, but having nowhere to go can be a benefit.:meanie:

Yeah, one of the service groups (SAM), which does the school tours, also does some congrats calls. So yeah, they get your number from admissions.

Do you know if the school will pair you up with a pharmacy student roommate (assuming you go for a double) or keep the pharmacy students near each other?

Edit: Well, i just filled out the housing application...putting Seaver Hall double, Seaver Hall large double, Seaver Hall single as my top 1-3 preferences respectively. I didn't know what to put for the last 2 preferences so I just chose random dorms 🙂

Yeah, I'm going to live in dorms for the convenience. I looked at http://groups.google.com/group/usc-housing?lnk=
and it seems the price isn't too much cheaper. 570 for a double seems pretty good

thank you! i just found out by email but i think the email was sent out on friday.

I hope USC is sending out their acceptances periodically & not all at once for the AC people cause I haven't gotten anything & I'm getting a little bit nervous!

I believe they've sent out notices a few times since they started interviewing. I think after they pick from the last group of students, they'll let the AC people know who they want to take off the list. After that, I think it's whenever spots become available, they'll take off the AC list. I could be wrong, but reading the forums and last years thread that's how it seemed like they did it.

Great, so this means I'm doomed for another AC letter? This is hopeless.

I'm hoping we hear good news this Friday. :xf: It was on a Friday, 3 weeks after my interview that I got put on the AC list, and I believe 9 people were taken off the AC list on the same day too. I'm thinking more people should be removed off the AC list because some of the people that have been accepted have been declining their acceptance to go somewhere else.

If I'm not pulled off during this month, I think that's when I'm really going to start to worry. I hope to hear something soon. Good luck to you too! :luck:

Wow, we have a lot in common!! I hope you get in so I'm sending some good luck towards your way!!! :xf::luck::luck::luck::xf:

On other forums, many people on the AC list have been removed and accepted! I think this is not a great sign for the people who interviewed in March. Did anyone else get off the AC list and accepted to USC?

Which other forums??? Are there any other forums out there that are even more popular than SDN?? Can you share that with us??

That's only two people off the AC list from SDN since last time. I wouldn't say that "a lot" especially since they're probably going to do another update once they accept their final group of people. I'll start to worry after April.
